Nice To Meet You, Too

I stare out the window as Gemma and I make our way to school. All that is heard is the tapping sound of my fingers against the glass.

"Gemma, what's it like being a senior?" I ask tiredly.

"Could you ask later? I'm driving," she replies, keeping her eyes on the road.

I sigh. "Did that guy you like ask you out yet?"

"I'm driving," she says sternly.

"His name was something like Josh, right?"

She let's out a groan. "Yes, his name is Joshua. And no, he hasn't asked me out."

"Yet," I add.

"I don't even think he likes me, Opal," she sighs. "How about you and Mr. Pretty Boy?"

"Are you talking about Nathan? He's just a friend," I reply.

"Just a friend my ass. You guys just met and I see you with him all the time," she says.

"I don't hang with him all the time," I say tiredly.

"Whatever floats your boat," Gemma says, as she parks in an empty spot.

"Bye, Gemma," I say, opening the car door. "See you after school."

"Just get to class, Opal," she says, looking through her bag.

"Where's the love?" I ask with a hurt expression, my hand on my heart.

"I left it at home. Now go," she replies.

I smile at her response, as I make my way to the front of the school.

~

"So would you?" Bella asks, as she hid her phone under the desk, so Ms. Welten wouldn't see.

"I don't know," I reply. "Don't you have to pay to go there, or something?"

She looks up for a moment. "Actually, I don't know either," she says, looking back at her phone. "But I would give anything to go to Coachella."

We're currently in home room, waiting for the bell to indicate it's our next period.

"Is Bella here?" Ms. Welten asks, as she takes attendance.

"I'm over here," Bella calls out, giving a small wave with her hand. Then, the bell rings.

"Everyone, head to your next period," Ms. Welten says, as the students exit the room to their next class.

Bella and I walk together, as we head to biology class. Once we step inside, we take our seats, and Mr. Gusten begins to explain to the class about what we'll be doing today.

"Good morning," Mr. Gusten says tiredly.

"Good morning, Mr. G," came the response of a few students.

"I was actually planning to let you guys work on a worksheet, but unfortunately, I left them at my house," he explains.

A few quiet cheers of joy are heard around the room.

"Instead, I will let you watch a video on the topic we'll be learning today," he says. "If you need to, you may move your chairs closer to the front."

Immediately, everyone from the back either carried or dragged their chair over to their friends sitting near the front, as Mr. Gusten turned on the projector.

Bella dragged her chair next to mine, and the video began.

~

Almost half of my classmates are asleep now. The video Mr. Gusten is making us watch is boring as hell.

I'm surprised he hasn't noticed how many heads are resting on the desks. Somehow, Bella found it interesting. If this video doesn't end soon, I'll be asleep, too.

My eyes are slowly closing, when I feel something hit my head. I look down at the floor, and find a crumpled paper ball. I pick it up and open it. In neat handwriting, it read:

hey there, red

I stare at the note in confusion. I don't have red hair..

I look down at my clothes, and realize I'm wearing a red hoodie. Then, my eyes began a search across the room, looking for the writer of the note. And my eyes land on someone smirking directly at me.

Will Parker.

I raise an eyebrow at Nathan's friend, and in return, I get a wink.

Okay, then..

I look away, crumple the note, and throw it somewhere on the floor. Then, I fix my attention back to the video. I'm wide awake now.

~

"Wow, rude much?" Bella asks, as she steals some of my french fries. Most of my french fries.

"How was it rude?" I ask tiredly, watching my best friend stuff her face with food.

"Ooo few awa a no-"

"Bella, stop!" I exclaim, wiping the saliva and pieces of hamburger off my face. "Eat first, smartass."

She rolls her eyes, but continues to eat her food. Finally, after she swallowed her food, she spoke:

"You threw away a note from a cute guy," she says, reaching her hand over to my tray to steal more fries.

I slap her hand away. "I'm gonna eat, too."

I grab a handful of my fries and eat them in front of her. "Who cares?"

"Uh, I do. He probably wanted to give you his number, or something," she says, grabbing her phone out of her bag.

"You're a fucking bitch!" Someone shouts, and the whole cafeteria becomes silent. The voice is so familiar. Wowza.

It's the annoying voice of Chloe Anderson.

Everyone turns to the table in the center of the room, where Chloe is standing up. She gives a cold glare at Heather, sitting at the table with the rest of their group.

"Chloe, stop attracting attention. It's just a table. I could eat here if I want," Heather says calmly, loud enough for all of us to hear.

"I'm not sharing a table with you," Chloe says in disgust.

"Then go," Heather says.

Chloe doesn't need to be told twice. She grabs her bag and storms out of the cafeteria, anger written all over her face.

"The drama queen has left the room," Bella quietly says to me.

~

"Did you tell your mom?" I ask Bella, as we walk outside the school.

"Yea. She said I could stay until 6," she replies.

We make our way to my sister's car, where Gemma is waiting for us. "What took you guys so long?" she asks, as she begins to start the car.

"Gemma, school ended five minutes ago," I reply, sitting down in the car next to her. Bella takes a seat in the back.

"I saw that brat from your class in the principal's office. I heard it was something that happened at lunch..?" my sister says unsurely.

"She called her friend a bitch in front of everyone in the cafeteria," Bella says simply, keeping her eyes on her phone.

"Wow. Well she's getting suspended for that," Gemma says, making a right turn.

~

"You gotta come with me," Bella whines, as she sits on my bed, clutching my stuffed bear.

"No. I'm staying home, and I'm going to study for the test next week," I say, laying on the floor while reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever.

Still a kid at heart.

"You need to get out more, Opal," she says. "Just live a little bit. You haven't been to that much high school party, and we're almost seniors. I know it's not-"

Thankfully, the basketball hitting my window interrupted Bella's lecture. Unfortunately, it freaking cracked my window.

Shocked, I slowly approach the window and look outside. On the road, I see Derek Sandro.

Kyle Hughes.

Will Parker.

And Nathan Adams. They're all staring at my window, shock written on their faces as well.

Cautiously, I slowly lift my cracked window up just a bit. "What the fucking hell are you guys doing?"

I hear a little squeal behind me. I turn around and see Bella, with a huge grin on her face. Now's not the fucking time to be happy. They almost broke my window..

"Hi!" Bella squeals happily.

"Bella, shut up," I say, annoyed.

"Who's your friend?" Nathan asks, with a smirk on his face.

"None of your business, bitch. Now tell me how you gonna fix my window," I say, loud enough for them to hear.

My best friend smacks the back of my head. "I'm Bella," she says with a smile.

I rub the back of my head. "Ow," I say quietly to myself.

"Well, hi Bella," Nathan says. I don't have to look at Bella to tell that she's blushing like crazy. Like, I love you, but bitch stop.

I roll my eyes. "Answer me. How are you gonna fix my window?"

Nathan turns his attention back to me. "I didn't throw the ball," he says, with his hands up in surrender. "It was Derek."

"It was an accident," Derek says quickly.

"Accident my ass," Will scoffs.

"Well, I'm sorry I can't aim,"  Derek mumbles.

"Boy, the basket is right there," Nathan says, gesturing to the basketball hoop set up in front of his house. "How could you miss that?"

"Opal, I'm going to murder you!" I hear, as my door swings opens, revealing my sister. "Why the hell are you screaming? I was on the phone with Joshua," she says, running her fingers through her hair. "I bet he thinks I'm weird."

"How would he think you're weird?"

Her sad expression quickly turned into a scowl. "Because I have a little sister who's fucking crazy as hell!"

Well damn, bitch.

"I'm sorry," I say in a bored tone. "But I have problems of my own. Let me show them to you through my cracked window." I gesture toward the window.

Her eyes widen. "You broke your window?!"

"No, it was them," I say pointing outside. Gemma walks over to take a peek. The boys are still standing out on the road, and they're currently having a little conversation.

She brings her face closer to the window. "Is that Kyle?"

"Who?" I ask with my arms crossed against my chest. "The one that looks like Kyle Hughes and who has been in your class for almost four years? Eh, it's probably him."

She slaps my arm lightly. "Mom is going to kill us, though," Gemma says, observing the damage made by the ball.

"But it wasn't even us."

Gemma raises an eyebrow at me, as she gives me a straight face. "Sorry, let me rephrase that," and she clears her throat. "Our Filipino mother is going to slap our asses, no matter how old we are, just because of a cracked window."

"Oh, right," I mumble, enlightened by my sister's words.

She rolls her eyes. Then, she pulls out her phone and begins to tap her fingers on it. "Who are you texting? Your boyfriend," I ask, attempting to wiggle my eyebrows.

She looks up at me with a confused expression. "Boyfriend?"

"Joshua Suarez," I say dreamily, batting my eyelashes as fast as I can.

"I'm texting mom, dumbass," she says, lightly slapping my head and exiting the room.

I turn and look at Bella, who is now sitting quietly on my bed. "She loves me."

"Yea, I noticed."

~

Although, it was Derek that threw the ball, Nathan told my mom a different story and said it was him.

Both of our mothers had to miss their meeting, and let me tell you, they were not happy about it.
