Chapter 7: Chapter 7: How Badass?

How Badass?

"I'm really sorry, Mrs. Rodriguez," Nathan apologizes, as he stands outside the door with his mom beside him.

"It's fine, my dear," my mom says. "I could get it fixed."

Mrs. Adams nudges Nathan with her shoulder and he sighs. "And, I could help around the house for a week to make up for it."

"Oh no, you don't have to do that. It's fine," my mom insists.

"See, Mom. It's fine. Let's go now," Nathan says quickly, taking his mom's hand and dragging her away.

"Oh, bye! See you later," Mrs. Adams calls out, as her son leads her home. I watch as they enter their house and close the door.

I laugh quietly to myself as my mom shuts the door. "That boy is something," she says smiling.

"Yea, something," I mumble.

"Well, let's go check your window again. I hope no cold air will get into your room tonight," she says.

~

Thankfully, my window was just a cracked window, so I got to sleep in my room.

By sleep, I mean staying up all night on my phone, because today is Friday.

I'm scrolling through Instagram photos when my phone starts to ring. And it's an unknown number.

I answer it anyway.

"Hello?" I ask tiredly. "May I know who's speaking?"

"This is Nathan Adams speaking, Ms. Rodriguez."

Quickly, I sit up in bed. "How the hell do you have my number?"

I hear someone softly knock on my door. "Anak, you're still awake?"

"Sorry, Mama," I reply. "I'm just on the phone with a friend."

"Don't be up too late. Goodnight," she says, as I hear her footsteps walk away from my door.

"How do you have my number?" I repeat to the phone.

"Bella," he simply replies.

I run my fingers through my hair. "Well, what do you want?"

"I was just wondering if you wanna come over tomorrow. If you're not busy," he says.

"Why?"

"My mom is going to her cousin's wedding tomorrow morning, and she won't be back 'till Sunday afternoon."

"I thought I only babysit from Mondays to Thursdays," I say tiredly.

He laughs softly. "You don't have to babysit. You're just coming over to have fun."

"With who?" I sigh.

"My friends, my sister, and me."

"Sure. See you tomorrow, Nathan."

"See you tomorrow, Minnie Mouse," he says, and he hangs up.

~

I make my way across the street to Nathan's house. I ring the doorbell, and immediately, someone answers.

Will Parker stands in front of me, wearing a navy blue shirt and sweatpants. "Hey, red," he says smirking.

I look down at my black hoodie. "It's called black, dumbass."

"Your shoes," he says. I look down at the ground and find my red Converses.

"Oh," I say quietly to myself. "So, uh, I want to go inside now."

"Let her in, Will," Kyle says behind him.

"I was just having fun with her," Will says, stepping beside to let me in.

"Opal!" I hear, as I see Ella running towards me, wearing a blue dress. "You gotta help me. Derek stole my unicorn."

"But she's my girlfriend," Derek says, referring to the stuffed toy. He walks over, with Ella's unicorn in his hands. He's wearing a white shirt and jeans.

"No, she's my unicorn," Ella says, stomping her feet, with an angry expression.

"But I love her," Derek says smiling, as he hugged the unicorn.

"Will, help me get my unicorn," Ella says, tugging his sweatpants.

"Yes, Your Highness," Will replies, bending down so he could give her a piggy-back ride.

"You guys are not helping me!" Nathan shouts from the kitchen. I make my way there, and find him mixing a bowl full of pancake batter.

"Oh, hey. You're here," he says, looking up at me, with a smile on his face.

"Yep, I'm here," I reply. "Making pancakes?"

"Trying to make pancakes," he corrects me, as he continues to mix the batter.

"Why are you doing it by yourself?"

"Kyle is supposed to be helping me," he replies.

"I am helping," Kyle says, walking into the kitchen. "I'm making sure you don't burn the house down."

"Fuck you," Nathan scoffs.

"Fuck you, t-"

Oh, Lord..

"Ella is literally in the room next to us," I say, interrupting Kyle.

"Just give me the bowl, Nate. I'll mix, you heat the pan."

Nathan hands the bowl to Kyle and begins to heat the pan.

I roll my eyes and leave the room. Boys..

~

"Bruh, you're cheating!" I shout.

"Says the one with a character that can fly," Nathan scoffs.

"Don't listen to them, Kirby. They're just jealous," I say to the TV screen.

"Watch me bash you with my Donkey Kong," Will says, focused on the game.

"Guys, I died like fifteen times," Derek says. "Can we pause the game so I could get a new character?"

"Deal with it, Derek," Will says.

Yea, we're playing Super Smash Bros. This is how we're spending our morning. It's just the boys and I laying on a couch like fatties, as we play video games.

Where's Kyle, you may ask?

He's in the kitchen making a thousand more pancakes. After making the first one, he just became so amazed by how perfect it was, that he wanted make more.

Yea, I don't even know, either.

And where's Ella?

Helping Kyle with the pancakes.

I'm just about to fly away from Donkey Kong, when the doorbell rings.

"I'll get it," Nathan says quickly, running towards the door.

And an idea pops in my head. "Will, wanna be my ally?"

"Yea, sure."

"Our only goal: assassinate Mario." (Nathan's character)

On Will's face is that familiar smirk of his. "Got it."

We continue killing Mario for almost three minutes, as Derek watched, when I hear someone's voice at the door.

"Hey, babe. Missed me?"

Babe?

"A lot," Nathan replies.

He let's someone inside, and it's Heather Bronson.

Will looks over from the couch and lets out a wolf whistle. "You never said you were inviting chicks, Nate."

I slap him lightly. "Will, shut up."

"Oh, hi Opal," Heather says smiling, surprised to see me.

"Hey, Heather," I say, forcing a smile.

"Who's here? Who's here?" Ella asks, running to the door. She stops immediately when she sees Heather.

"Is this your sister? She's so cute," Heather says. "Hi, cutie."

Something about Ella's face seemed like she was scared. "Are you the goblin?" She asks with wide eyes.

I almost choked on my own spit.

"Ella, what the heck?" Nathan asks, clearly embarrassed. "Where did you hear that from?"

"Chloe sh-showed me a picture, and told me it was a g-goblin," Ella whispers. "And the goblin looks just like her."

"That bitch," Heather says quietly under her breath.

Then, she puts on a sweet face and speaks to Ella. "I'm not a goblin, sweetie. Chloe is just a witch. She likes lying to people."

"Chloe told me that goblins love lying. She also said they eat little girls," Ella says, stomping her foot.

"You know what, Nathan?" Heather asks, facing him. "I think I should leave now. I'm late for something anyway."

And she walks out the door, straight to her car. Yep, that bitch gotta car.

"Hold up, Heather," Nathan calls out, but she already drove away.

"Aw, was little Nathan planning to get some tonight?" I ask, pouting my lips.

"Shut up," Nathan says. "And you," he says glaring down at his little sister, "can't you just keep your mouth shut? You're so stupid." Um..

Ella gasped. "Mommy said stupid is a bad word, Nathan."

"But that's what you are."

"Nathan, she's your little sister," Will says in a serious tone, but Ella's face is already covered in tears.

Derek walks over and picks her up, comforting her. "Shh, it's okay, princess," Derek says softly.

Nathan runs his fingers through his hair and walks out the door.

I didn't know I was in a drama series..

"I got it," I say, before Will could go after him. I walk out the door, finding Nathan laying on the grass in his front lawn.

"Hey, drama king," I say, laying down beside him. "What happened in there?"

"I don't know," Nathan mumbles.

"And why was Heather here?"

He sighs. "Okay, I'm gonna be honest with you. I was thinking we could all hang out, and afterwards, when we were alone, I was going to ask her to be my girlfriend."

"Oh," is all that comes out of my mouth.

Then, we just stare up at the clouds floating in the blue sky, none of us knowing what to say.

"Hey, you're a girl, right?" Nathan asks, breaking the silence.

"That's what I've been told."

"Do you think Heather would've said yes?"

I think for a moment. "Depends on how she thinks of you," I finally say. "If you make her laugh, or make her feel butterflies in her stomach, then you mean something to her."

"I've kissed her."

"But that's just a kiss, though. Either she felt fireworks, or she felt nothing at all."

Then there's silence, as I keep my eyes on a cloud, slowly making its way across the sky. I hear Nathan let out a small cough.

"Uh, what do you see in her?" I ask.

"I don't know, she makes me feel some type of way," he says. "She's beautiful, too."

"Cool," I reply, nodding my head.

"You should apologize to your sister, you know," I say. "It would be the mature thing to do."

He let's out sigh. "Okay," he mumbles, getting up. I stay on the ground, just looking up at him.

His green eyes stared back down at me in confusion. "Are you coming with me or not?"

"I'm too fat," I reply dramatically. "Help the hippo up," I say, sticking my hand out to him.

He takes it and helps me up. "You are lazy as hell."

"Aw, you know me so well. We're practically best friends," I say, jumping on his back.

"Oh god, you're heavy," he says, but he manages to give me a piggy-back ride all the way to the house.

We walk inside to find all the boys sitting in the living room, and in front of them is a huge pile of pancakes.

"Breakfast is ready," Kyle says proudly, as he watches Will, Derek, and Ella play video games.

"Finally," Nathan says breathlessly, as he sets me back down.

"Thanks," I say, patting his back. I walk over to the plate full of pancakes and grab one with my hand.

"Woah, grab a plate, caveman," Kyle says.

"Cavewoman," I correct him, as I stuff the pancake in my face.

"Hey, Nathan. Don't you have something to say to your sister?" Derek asks, with Ella leans on him, hiding from her brother.

"Hey, Ella?" Nathan asks softly, standing by the couch. "I'm sorry."

Ella looks up at her brother. "I'm sorry I made the goblin run away, Nathan," she says.

He picks her up into a hug, and all I could do is admire how cute they are.

So I took out my phone to capture the memories.

Nathan notices and covers his face with his hand. "No paparazzi, please."

~

"JUMP. JUMP. JUMP. JUMP," they chanted, as I stood on the roof, staring down at the enormous pile of pillows in the backyard.

"Guys, can I please pass?" I ask.

"Nah, Opal. It's a dare. Just do it," Will says.

"JUST DO IT," the rest of the boys repeat.

Too bad I can't be with Ella, who's below me inside the house, watching SpongeBob. I silently thank the roof isn't that far from the ground.

"If I die, I'll haunt you for the rest of your life," I warn them.

"Deal," Nathan says.

I let out a shaky breath. And I jump.

~

"Fuck all of you," I say breathlessly, as Nathan carries me into the house.

That pile of pillows did not help at all.

Nathan drops me down on the couch. Ow.

"Bitch, be gentle," I snap.

"Language, Minnie Mouse," he says, smirking.

"Opal, you want some ice?" Kyle asks from the kitchen.

"For my broken ass? Yes, please," I reply.

"Where's Ella?" Derek asks.

"She's taking a nap in her room," Nathan replies, as Kyle enters the living room with an ice pack.

"Here," he says, handing me the ice pack.

"Thanks."

"I gotta admit, Rodriguez," Will says, "that was pretty badass."

"It was badass and it was bad for my ass," I scoff.

"That wasn't as badass as me," Nathan says.

"Well, how badass are you, Mr. Adams?" I ask, mockingly.

"Come into my room and I'll show you," he whispers into my ear, sending tingling vibes down my spine.

"Ew. Away from my space bubble, please," I say, pushing him away.
