Tell Me More About You
A/N: I actually feel a bit proud of this chapter. And I'm so close to 50 votes (barely). I know it's not really an accomplishment, but you know. I'm poor.
Now on with the story.
"I'm fat. I'm fat. I'm fat," I repeat, as I lay lazily on the couch.
"Opal, can you shut up? You're not fat," Nathan says, sitting beside my fat body, as he eats a bag of chips.
"You want some?" He asks, handing me the bag in his hands.
"Did you not hear me?" I ask. "Do you want my body to explode?"
"I'll take that as a no," he says, continuing to eat. "Do you want to do something? You've been laying here for about an hour, now."
"Because my butt hurts, dumbass," I groan. "How about you try jumping off your roof?"
"Nah, I'm good," he replies.
We start hearing little footsteps traveling down the stairs. "Nathan?" asks a soft voice.
"We're in the living room, Ella," Nathan calls out.
Ella slowly walks into the living room, rubbing her eyes. "Where's Derek?" she asks tiredly.
"They already left," I reply.
"Oh," she replies, as she climbs onto the couch to take a seat next to her brother.
"Did you have a nice nap," he asks.
She nods her head slowly in reply, with a tired smile on her face.
"Good," her brother replies with a smile.
~
Both of us walk out into the quiet night. I lay in the grass of the backyard, as Nathan takes a space beside me. "I wish we could see the stars," I say softly.
"Yea," he agrees, gazing up at the empty night sky.
My fingers played with the grass, as I tried my best to look for a star above.
"Wanna play a game?" He asks. I turn to look at him beside me.
"Sure," I reply.
"I ask a question about you. You ask a question about me."
My face scrunches up in confusion. "And how is this a game?"
"I don't know. Just go with it," he says.
"Okay.. Favorite color?" I ask.
"Maroon."
"Oh, cool," I say.
"Thanks. Okay, my turn.. How many boyfriends did you have in your whole life?"
Uh, what?
"Why do you want to know?"
"Just answer it, Opal."
I think for a moment. "Two," I finally say. "One in sixth grade, the other in freshmen year."
"What happened to the one in freshmen year?" He asks.
"I thought it was my turn to ask a question."
"Fine, go," he says, impatiently.
"Do you have any other siblings beside Ella?"
"Nope. Just Ella," he replies. "Okay, what happened to the one in freshmen year?"
I let out a sigh. "Cheated on me. He never liked me, anyway. He just dated me because almost every guy in class had a girlfriend," I reply, gazing at the sky. "The sad thing is that I actually liked him. I probably still like him now."
"Who is it?"
I turn and raise an eyebrow at him.
"Please?" He begs.
I roll my eyes. "Vince Wellis," I reply. "I think he's in your biology class."
"Yea, he is."
I nod my head. "So, favorite fruit?"
"Star fruit."
I quickly turn to him. "Same. I've only tried them like five times, but I love them."
He let's out a soft laugh. "So, do you have any other siblings beside Gemma?"
That question stops my heart for a moment. Suddenly, my fingers are wandering through the grass. My hand eventually meets another hand. Nathan.
My hand quickly flinches away. "Sorry."
"Oh, it's okay.. So, you're gonna answer my question?"
"Yes, I have another sister," I reply, softly. "Her name is Ruby."
"Pretty name," he says.
A small smile forms on my face. "Pretty name for a pretty face. Ruby Rodriguez, currently 12 years old."
"Oh, she's turning 13 next year," he says.
I could already feel the tears stinging my eyes, as I struggled to keep them back. "She would be turning 13 next year," I correct him, as the words leave my mouth in a whisper.
I quickly sit up. "Sorry, I got something in my eye," I lie, although you can hear my voice cracking, as I try my best to wipe the tears away. Stop crying. You promised Ruby not to cry.
But they continue to roll down my face, anyway.
"Hey, you okay?" He asks softly, sitting up beside me. I feel his hand on my back, in an attempt to comfort me.
The weird thing is, whenever I cry and someone asks me if I'm alright, I immediately break down.
My quiet cries have turned into loud sobs. And soon, I start hiccuping. Great job, Opal.
I feel Nathan's hand leave my back, and instead he pulls me into a hug.
"I shouldn't have asked. I'm sorry," he apologizes.
I just nod my head, because I know I can't say a word when I'm currently a waterfall. With hiccups.
My head rests on his shoulder, as I try to control my breaths.
Finally, I've calmed down, with only my hiccups to deal with.
"Sorry," I say quietly.
"Why?"
"I think there's a stain of tears on your sweatshirt," I reply. "Maybe with a mix of snot." I know, I'm a pig.
He laughs. "It's okay. I could wash it."
And that's how we spent the rest of the night, talking for hours about life, until 2 in the morning. Just me, safe in his arms.
Just me and him staring at the empty sky.
~
"So, why did you come back home so late?" Gemma asks, sitting at the edge of my bed.
"I was just..helping around the house," I reply sleepily. "Like, washing the dishes-"
"At 2:44 in the morning?"
"Uh, there was lots of plates. And forks," I reply. "And spoons."
She raises an eyebrow at me. "You know what? Just go back to sleep. You must be tired from washing all those dishes."
I smile at her. "Thank you." And I bury my whole body under my blankets and pillows.
~
Mondays. I climb out of bed, and make my way to the bathroom.
When I come out, I pick an outfit. Ripped skinny jeans and a plain white shirt.
I walk downstairs with my bag, grab a fruit, and put on my white converses. "Gemma, you're driving me today?"
She's about to walk out the door. "Sorry, but I promised I'd pick up my friends and drive them to school."
"Wait, what about me?" I ask. "Is mom still here?"
"She left early to work."
I run my fingers through my hair. "So who's gonna drive me?"
"Sorry, Opal. Maybe you could ask your boyfriend," she smiles and walks out the door.
"He's not my boyfriend," I say under my breath.
I walk out the door, as my sister drives away. I find Nathan already outside by his motorcycle, and he's about to leave.
"Wait! Nathan!" I call out, running to him. He stops and stares at my direction, giving me a surprised look.
Finally, I'm in front of him. "Can I," I gasp, "get a ride. To school?"
He let's out a laugh. "Sure," he replies. "You didn't have to run. Wanna catch your breath first?"
I nod my head. And I drop my tired body onto the ground.
~
He parks his motorcycle by the school, and we walk into the building together. "Wanna go in the cafeteria with me?" He asks.
I look up from my phone. "I usually go straight to class."
"C'mon, you could eat something."
"I ate a peach," I say.
He let's out an annoyed groan. I watch as he grabs my arm and pulls me into the cafeteria. Lots of people are here in the morning. "Nathan, let go," I whine.
But of course, he ignores. He leads me to a table, and sitting at the table is his squad.
"Hey, Opal," Derek says, smiling.
"Hey," I reply, with a smile on my face as well.
Will is currently on his phone, while Kyle is studying for some test he has today. "How's life, Opal?" Kyle asks, keeping his eyes on his papers.
"Life is a bitch," I reply, tiredly.
Kyle nods his head in understanding.
"Nate," Will says, "she's over there. You should ask her right now." I look over to the direction they're staring at, and I find Heather.
Nathan let's out a breath, and confidently makes his way to her. "Ooh, let's see how this goes," I say, watching closely.
Although we can't hear them from here, I see their mouths moving. Suddenly, Heather's face lightens up, and she gives Nathan a huge hug. And then they kiss.
In front of everyone. Make way for the new couple.
~
I walk into the girls' locker room to change. Next up, is P.E., and it's the only class that has almost everyone that I know.
I get into my shorts and shirt, and walk outside the room. I find Bella, jogging around the gym like everyone else. I finally catch up to her. "Hey," I say beside her.
"Hi," she says, smiling. "I heard we're doing volleyball today."
"I love volleyball," I say, happily.
"I know that, Opal," my best friend replies.
"Okay, listen up, you teenagers!" Mrs. Brown shouts. "Against the wall in a straight line. Now."
We all walked tiredly to the wall. I try to find a space beside Bella, but nope. Didn't happen.
I quickly end up finding a space between two people. I didn't really see who there are, but that doesn't matter.
Mrs. Brown paces back and forth. "Today, we will be practicing our volleyball skills," she explains. "There will be four groups. Group 1 and 2, you play against each other, and group 3 and 4, same thing."
Then, she gives out the numbers to each one of us. I end up getting the number 2.
"1's and 2's on this side of the court, 3's and 4's on this side!"
I quickly make my way to my group. There are a few people recognize, but one catches my eye.
That person, who I've been trying to ignore throughout highschool, is Vince Wellis.
He probably won't recognize me. We barely talk now anyway..
"Opal, wanna lead?" Pepper asks. She my classmate in home room.
"Sure."
I take a glance at group 1 through the volleyball net that separates us, and I clearly recognize Bella, Chloe, and Nathan.
"Okay, is everyone ready?" I ask my group. I get a 'yes' in reply. "Remember, if it seems closer to your upper body, set the ball. Don't bump it."
I see a few nod their heads in reply, and I shout 'ready' to group 2.
"You play volleyball, Opal?"
I turn to Nathan's voice, and spot a smirk on his face. "For fun, yea," I reply.
"Cool."
Someone from group 2 shouts 'ready', and I watch as Pepper serves the ball.
~
"Melanie, stop bumping the ball backwards," I groan.
"Sorry," she says, shyly.
I let out a sigh. "Try keeping your hands low and don't put so much force into it."
She gives me a quick nod, as Nathan serves the ball.
"Call it!" I shout, as I see the ball come toward me. I bump it and watch it make it to the other side.
Chloe sets it. "Vince, that's yours!" I shout, eyeing the ball heading toward him.
He spikes it, but it hits the net.
"Times up!" Mrs. Brown calls out. "Now go to the lockers and get changing."
"We won," I say happily, walking beside my tired best friend.
"Of course your team was going to win," she gasps for air. "You were on it."
"I know right," I say flipping my hair. "Uh, but I'm sweating hella hard, though."
I run my hands over my ponytail, as I spot Nathan and his new girlfriend laughing together.
And even though I should be happy for him, something else was going through my mind.
~
"Gonna eat that?" I ask Bella, as she ignores the beautiful piece of garlic bread on her tray.
She shrugs her shoulders. "Take it."
I quickly grab it, and take a few bites. I smile happily with the food in my mouth.
"Sometimes, I wonder why you aren't fat," Bella says, eyeing me.
I stop. "Girl, I am fat."
"Girl, no you're not."
I roll my eyes and fix my attention back on the bread. I take another few bites, and I'm happy again.
"Uh hey, Opal," I hear behind me, and I turn around, still holding my food.
And behind me is Vince Wellis. Bitch, no. Go away.
"What do you want?" I ask, annoyed.
"Just wanted to say hi," he says with smile, but I'm still getting bad vibes from him.
"Hey, bitch," I say with a huge smile. "Okay, go away now."
The shock written on his face made Bella laugh so hard.
Why is he still standing there?
"This is the part, where you walk away," I tell him.
"If you're just acting like this because of that breakup, which was years ago, then this is really immature," he says, a bit angry for my taste.
He did not just go there..
"No, Vince," I say, standing up now. "I'm actually really glad we broke that day, because I would be ashamed to be with an embarrassment like you, right now."
"An embarrassment?"
"Yes, bitch. That's what I just said," I reply.
He stares for a bit. "You changed a lot."
I let out a laugh. "Well, it's not like I'm supposed impress you," I say, looking around for a bit. "So, where's the hoe that you cheated on me with?"
It's now, that I notice we've attracted a crowd of people. Most have their phones out, while freshmen just watch with curiosity.
"I wasn't cheating on you." Lies.
"So, kissing and hugging another girl while dating me, is not cheating?" I ask. "What do you want to call it, then? Having a side hoe?"
"Okay, okay. Break it up, you two," says one of the lunch ladies. "If y'all don't want me calling the principal, I want y'all to shake hands."
Vince sticks his hand out first. Nah, I'm not touching that piece of shit..
"Ms. Rodriguez?" the lunch lady says. How does she know my name? I don't know either.
I roll my eyes and shake the bitch's hand.
"Good," the lady smiles, and walks back to the kitchen.
I glare at him before grabbing my bag and leaving the cafeteria. "Hey, wait. Where're you going?" Bella asks, still chewing her food, as she watches me go.
She quickly wipes her mouth, and follows behind me.
~
I step into the bathroom and let out a groan. "Why can't he just die and go to hell?" I groan.
"Damn, girl. Chill," Bella says, patting my back. "I don't get why you're so angry."
"It's not just that," I say, frustrated. "I.. I don't even know.."
"Well, this is what it's like being a girl," she says, giving me a hug.
"Being a girl is hard as fuck," I sigh, hugging her back.
