The Hyper Five Year Old

♠️Nathan's P.O.V.♠️

I watch Opal run out of the cafeteria, as Bella follows behind her.

"Well, someone has a bitchy attitude," my girlfriend says quietly beside me.

I don't even say anything to her comment.

I just stare at the door where she left.

~

"So is she okay?" I ask, standing in front of the girls' bathroom with Bella.

"She just needs time to cool down," Bella replies, as she combs her fingers through her wavy hair.

"Oh, okay," I mumble. I walk back to the cafeteria.

I make my way through the doors and back to my table and I take a seat next to Heather.

"So, is your friend fine?" She asks tiredly, with her eyes on her phone.

"Yea," I reply.

"I never seen her that angry," Derek says.

We hear a huge giggle come from the table Heather usually sat on. "Um, babe? Next time, can I invite some of my girls here?" Heather asks. "There's so much space."

"Sorry, Heather," Kyle says, "but we only allow-"

"Sure, babe," I interrupt him, seeing Heather smile.

"Thanks," she says, and gives me a quick kiss, before heading to her table to catch up with her friends.

"Bruh, I thought we agreed only us, and anyone we want to invite, could sit at this table," Will says, in an angry tone. "I don't need a bunch of hoes at the table. Heather was fine."

"Will, shut up. It's just gonna be a few of Heather's friends," I say, trying to defend her.

"Nate, I've been her for almost three years, longer than you," Will says. "You don't know the history of those girls. They've dated almost every guy in the school, and mostly everyone knows that."

"So, what're you saying?" I ask, confused.

"People will think that we actually hang out with those girls. Like, I love chicks and all, but not those chicks. I'm not that type of guy," Will explains.

"It's true, though," Kyle says.

"It'll be fine, guys."

"Not for me, Nate," Will says, shaking his head. "If they are here tomorrow, then I'm sitting at Opal's table."

~

"See you tomorrow, babe," Heather says, giving me a kiss.

She walks off to her car and drives away.

I make my way out to the parking lot, when I see Opal, arguing with her sister. I watch until Gemma drives away, leaving her sister behind.

Opal runs her fingers through her hair, while biting her lip.

I immediately walk over to her. "You okay?"

"I'm fine," she replies. You don't look fine.

Now that I'm right in front of her, I notice her nose is slightly pink. Like she's been crying.

"You got a ride home?"

She shakes her head. "My sister is being a bitch," she says, quietly.

I let out a small laugh.

She smiles. "So, how are you and Ms. Bronson?" she asks, teasingly.

"Pretty good," I say. "So, are you..okay?"

She looks into my eyes, and for the first time, I notice the little flecks of gold she has in her eyes. "From the cafeteria? Yea, I'm great," she replies.

I nod my head and hand her my helmet. "Ready, Your Highness?"

She let's out a laugh, and takes the helmet. "Shut up, dumbass," she says, smiling. "You should be saying that to your girlfriend."

We walk to my motorcycle, and we make our way home.

~

I slow down and park in front of her house. "Home sweet home, Minnie Mouse."

She let's me go and takes off my helmet. "Thanks," she says smiling. Then she walks toward her house, as I make my way to the driveway of my house.

I open the door and step inside. "Mom, I'm home."

"We're in the kitchen, sweetie," my mom calls out.

I walk into the kitchen, finding my little sister mixing a bowl, with my mom right beside her.

"Look, Nathan," Ella says happily, "me and Mommy are making brownies."

"Wow, look at you. You look just like a chef," I say, making her smile even more. Then I turn to my mom.

"Uh so, Mom," I say carefully. "I got a girlfriend today," I awkwardly say, with jazz hands.

Immediately, my mom looks up at me, with a shocked expression. Then, she smiles. "Oh I'm so proud of you," she says, giving me a hug.

"I knew you would ask her."

I froze. "You knew I would ask Heather?"

That's when my mom lets go. "Heather? Who's Heather?" She asks, clearly confused. "I'm talking about Opal."

"Opal? Mom, she's just my friend," I say.

She puts her hands on her hips. "So who is this 'Heather' girl?"

"She's a goblin," we hear someone say, in a loud whisper.

We both turn to Ella, who's staring at us. "Mommy, Chloe told me that Heafer is a goblin," she tells my mom, mispronouncing Heather's name.

"Okay, now I have no idea what's going on," Mom says.

I let out a groan. "Forget it. Forget anything I just said," I say, walking off to my room.

I drop my bags and change my clothes, then I head outside to the driveway. I grab a basketball in front of the garage door, and I throw a few hoops.

~

I walk upstairs to my room and drop my body onto my bed. "Life hates me. Life hates you. Life hates everything I do," I sing to myself, as I stare at the ceiling.

Then slowly, I fall asleep.

But a few hours later, I wake up to the sound of voices. In my living. It sounds like more than one voice, and my mom is still at work.

I grab my phone to check the time. 4:49

"Shit," I say to myself, realizing I have to get ready. I'm supposed to babysit in about 10 minutes.

I get into my shorts and hoodie, and slowly make my way downstairs.

And what I see before me makes me stop and smile.

On the couch, is my sister sitting down, and beside her is Joshua Suarez.

"Hey," I say cheerfully, once I'm at the bottom of the stairs. Gemma looks up at me.

"Oh hi, Opal," she says. "Uh, this is Josh."

"Hi," he says with a smile.

"Well, I'm just gonna head somewhere. I have to babysit," I say, walking to the door. "So, I'll just leave you two. Alone."

I close to door behind me, and find Nathan, playing basketball by himself.

I walk across the street toward his house, when he misses the hoop. It bounces of the backboard toward me, and I catch it.

Instead of giving it back to him, I shoot at the hoop and make it in. I smile to myself. Yes, I slay.

He looks at me. "Oh, hey," he says with a smile.

"Hey," I reply. "Did your mom already leave?"

He nods his head. I watch him place the ball near the garage, and he leads me to the house.

Inside, I find Ella, slumped on the couch watching Spongbob. "Hey, little princess," I say, smiling.

She looks up at me, and her whole face brightens up. "Opal, you're here!"

She runs over to me and I give her a hug. "So, how was school today?"

She let's go and looks at me. "I sang in front of the class," she says proudly.

"Wow," I say. "And did they clap for you?"

"No, because the teacher yelled at me, and she told me to sit down," she says, pouting her lip.

I smile. "Don't worry, she was probably jealous that you could sing better than her."

~

I grab a dandelion and blow the seeds off it. I watch as they float in the breeze.

"Let me try, Opal," Ella says.

I grab another and hand it to her. She blows, and all the seeds float away. She lets out a giggle. "It looks like it's snowing."

"It does," I say with a smile.

I turn to Nathan, who's sitting beside me, looking at his phone.

"Hey, Nathan?" I ask.

"Hmm?" He replies.

I poke his shoulder. "Tag you're it."

And I quickly stand up to run away. "C'mon, Ella! Nathan gonna catch you."

"Oh no," she says dramatically, following after me.

I turn around to see Nathan standing up now. And he's heading straight toward us.

I keep running around the backyard, until I feel two arms wrap around me. I let out a little yelp before I fall to the ground in Nathan's arms.

"Got you, Minnie Mouse," he whispers in my ear.

"Ew, go away," I laugh. I don't struggle to get out of his grip, though, because I'm already laughing so hard.

That's when I notice that his face his buried in the crook of my neck. I slowly stop laughing. "Uh, Nathan?" I ask, uncomfortable by the silence.

He looks up. "Oh, sorry," he says quickly, as his warmth leaves my body.

He gets up and reaches his hand down at me. I take it, and he helps me up. "You know what, Nathan?" I ask.

"What?" He asks.

"You're it again," I say, tapping his shoulder quickly and running away.

~

"It's all mine! Mine!" Nathan and I hear, as we both stand outside the bathroom door. And inside, is a very hyper five year old.

Nathan attempts to open the door again, but still no luck.

"Ella, can you give me back my candy please?" He asks, as he bangs the door.

"Why the fuck would you even keep a huge bag of candy under her bed?" I whisper to him, running my fingers through my hair.

"I thought she was still scared of having monsters under her bed," He exclaims.

"You're so smart," I scoff. "Your freaking sister is locked in the bathroom, high on candy."

We hear Ella's muffled laughter through the door.

"Okay," Nathan says. "There's a window in the bathroom. Let's try going in from outside."

"Okay," I sigh.

We walk out the front door to the window of the bathroom. "We are never playing hide-and-seek again," I mumble.

He tries lifting up the glass screen. "Shit," he says to himself. "Of course it's locked."

He steps away and starts looking for something on the ground, as I attempt to open the window myself.

He returns to my side. With a huge rock in his hand.

My eyes widen. "No," I say, shaking my head. "No rocks. Put it down right now."

"Chill," he says. "I'll have a broken window, you already have a broken window. We'll be even."

"But mine is just a crack. You're about to shatter your window."

He let's out a sigh, and drops the rock to the ground. Thank God.

I take a peek through the window, and find out the door is now wide open. And there's no Ella in the room.

I immediately run towards the front door. "She unlocked it," I shout, as Nathan watches me in confusion, before following after me.

As we slowly enter the door, we're met with the sound of an evil laughter echoing through the house. "It's like walking through a haunted house," Nathan says quietly.

"She's probably in her room. I'll check upstairs, you check down here," I explain. He nods his head and begins to search the living room.

I slowly walk upstairs, making my way to her room.

I step inside, and that's when I see her. Crouched on her bed, quietly laughing like a maniac.

Please don't kill me..

I quickly jump on the bed and wrap her tightly in my arms. "No!" She screams.

"I'm sorry, but you need to stop. Give me the bag, Ella," I say calmly to her.

"It's mine! Let go of me!" She whines.

"Nathan! I found her!"

I hear footsteps travel up the stairs, until he finally steps into the room. "Uh, need help?" He asks.

"What does it look like I need?" I ask.

He presses his lips together and gives me a small nod. Then, he walks over to me and grabs Ella from my grasp.
