Chapter 793 Why Suffer Like This?
âRing, ring, ringâ¦â The ringing disrupted Catherineâs thoughts. She reached over to grab her phone and held it to her ear.
âItâs me! Miss Swann, we discreetly tracked those following you last night and found out they entered the Golden Summit Tower. The property of that building is under the ownership of the Breens. It belongs to them.â
âDo you suspect the Breens send them? âCatherine directly concluded.
Francis paused for a moment, then affirmed. He said, âItâs not a suspicion. They indeed come from the Breens.â
Catherine believed in Francisâs judgment. He wouldnât make such a statement if he hadnât found anything. âAlright, I got it,â said she.
âMiss Swann, thereâs still no news from Roninâs side. We are intensifying our efforts to trace him. Weâll inform you immediately if we receive any updates.â
âOkay. If thereâs nothing else, Iâm hanging up.â After confirming that Francis had nothing urgent to report, Catherine hung up the phone and returned to her experiments.
Her experiments were in the final stages, and she couldnât afford to relax even though they were nearing completion. A mistake in any detail could lead to the failure of the entire experiment.
In these days, Catherine seemed as if nothing had happened, immersed in the lab day after day.
What Catherine didnât know was that every move she made at school was being closely monitored.
Although these people couldnât reach Catherineâs lab and interfere with her experiments, they could keep track of her basic movements and report to higher-ups.
The assistant relayed the latest information from the school to Shane. â Sir, Miss Swann has been staying in the lab these past few days. Apart from the night of the rescue, she seems to have no other moves.â
Upon hearing this, Shane furrowed his brow. Ronin was missing, and Catherine should not be entirely unaffected. âHave you investigated thoroughly?â Shane asked.
âYeah, sir.â The assistant nodded affirmatively. âOur people canât enter Miss Swannâs lab, but we can always see her movements. Indeed, Miss Swann has been in her lab these past few days. Sir, I heard Miss Swannâs experiments have been progressing rapidly. Maybe itâs because the lab work is occupying her.â
Shane obviously disagreed with the assistantâs explanation. He knew Catherine. He admired Catherine not only for her outstanding abilities but also for her character. She was the kind of person who would never abandon a friend, especially considering Ronin had been by her side since childhood, growing up together.
Even if it cost her life, Catherine wouldnât abandon Ronin. Shane had no doubt about that. âKeep an eye on her. Report any updates to me,â said Shane.
âYes, sir.â
As Catherine left the lab, she saw Rylan standing not far away. It seemed like he had been waiting for a while.
Instead of avoiding him, Catherine walked straight toward him.
Seeing her, Rylan was happy. The tension on his face instantly eased, replaced by a genuine smile. âIs work over?â he asked.
Unlike Rylan, Catherineâs mood was not elevated when she saw him. Her initially icy gaze now held no emotion. â Is there something?â
Facing Catherineâs icy attitude, Rylan didnât feel repulsed. Instead, he sincerely apologized, saying, â
Catherine, donât be angry. I was too impulsive yesterday. I apologize, and I hope youâre not mad.â
Rylan closed his eyes, and pain was evident on his face. âI wonât bring up things I shouldnât mention in the future.â
Catherine didnât understand his intentions but couldnât harbor resentment toward Rylan. After all, he once had been like an older brother, caring for her for many years.
âDonât mention the past. If you want to apologize, Iâve received it. Iâm leaving if thereâs nothing else,â said Catherine.
Watching Catherine leave, Rylan immediately caught up. âYou should be going to have lunch now, right? How about we go together?â
Catherine was about to refuse, but Rylan, with a slightly pleading tone, said, âYou wouldnât refuse to have lunch with me, right?â
Catherine glanced at him, recalling the scene when he risked his life to save her years ago. In the end, she didnât refuse.
In the dark and damp dungeon, Ronin huddled in a corner. He was injured, and due to lack of timely treatment, the wound had become infected. The infection caused a persistent high fever and intense overall pain.
Hearing footsteps approaching, Ronin propped himself up, raising his head to focus on the black-clothed man walking toward him.
The man wore a mask, hiding his face, and even his voice was disguised. Clearly, he was a professional.
From top to bottom, the masked man looked down arrogantly at Ronin, taking in his miserable state. âWhy suffer like this? Speak, and Iâll let you go.â
âHa!â Ronin laughed sarcastically, full of disdain in his words. He disdainfully assessed the man, showing he didnât take the threat seriously. âIf you have the guts, go ahead and kill me. But you should think it through; taking me out comes with a price tag.â
He believed that since these people understood him so well, they must have thoroughly investigated his background and naturally knew he was Catherineâs people.
Catherine had always valued loyalty and repaid every slight. Since these people dared to target him, they would have to endure Catherineâs retaliation. He knew that for him, Catherine would go to the ends of the earth to deal with these people.
Roninâs arrogant attitude infuriated the masked man. Stepping forward, he raised his foot and ruthlessly stomped on Roninâs face. âDo you still expect Catherine to come to your rescue? To be honest with you, in these days youâve been missing, Catherine has been diligently staying in the laboratory. She hasnât even bothered to look for you. Do you think she would go against such a formidable force as us for your sake? Ronin, donât be naive. Only by cooperating with us is your way out.â
Seeing Roninâs expression of disbelief, the masked man knew he wasnât buying it. Then, the masked man provided surveillance footage and Catherineâs clock-in records.
The evidence was right before him, and a hint of surprise flickered in Roninâs eyes. Although he quickly masked his unexpected emotions, the masked man successfully captured the moment.
âRonin, the evidence is undeniable. Now, you should be clear about your standing in Catherineâs heart. Letâs be honest. Youâre just a pawn. When youâre useful, they treat you with kindness, considering you as family, but theyâll kick you aside when youâre no longer of use. Thatâs the harsh reality.â
Ronin remained silent, and the masked man continued to persuade. He added, â Why sacrifice your life for someone like this? You have the ability, youâre young, and you still have a promising future. Itâs not worth wasting it like this.â
The masked man slowly broke through Roninâs mental defenses. He intentionally tormented Ronin for so long just for this moment.
Finally, Ronin couldnât take it anymore. He suddenly raised his head, eyes blazing red, a face full of unwillingness as he stared at the masked man. âWhat the hell do you want?â
