Hi everyone ðNew chapter here. My readers and commenting ððomdssss chapter 36 was at 101 comments even before it got to 30 reads (about 40 are my comment replies tho) but still!! Thank you guyssss I love seeing y'all interact in the comment sections, you always crack me up
That being said, DIVE INNN
UNKNOWN PERSON'S POV
(Not the observer)
"I'd do this over and over again with you"
"Do you think you can run away?"
"It's your word against mine"
"Pfft slimy disgusting pig"
"...slimy disgusting pig
...slimy disgusting pig"
"Ugghhh" frustration hits as I rid my stomach of it's toxin content
"You good in there?" Bianca's voice sounds behind my bathroom door, laced with its usual fake concern
"Yeah" I roll my eyes "go on without me"
I agreed to throwing a stupid party again as usual, they don't even help the escapism anymore. Even with the loudest noises blaring through the JBL speakers, I still hear that voice
It would be over when he leaves
It would be over when he goes back to school
It would be over when your parents are back
It would be over when you're older
My mantra for eight years, eight good years since that monster came into my life. I'll forever hate him, but more than anything I hate the woman I've become
I used to be an innocent, happy, too trusting child, loved everything and everyone- can't believe I actually looked forward to being an adult
Now I go on everyday of my life, thriving on what's too despicable to be thought of, blaming everyone but myself for the cause of my maniacal drive.
I spit the last bit of liquid in the toilet bowl and push the flush button down, staggering at bit from drowsiness. I turn on the tap on a washcloth and use it's damp ends to massage my forehead to relieve me of my banging headache at least a little. I turn the running water off and pause to listen for any movements in my room. When silence greets me, I pry open the bathroom door and walk into my mess of a room.
The lights are off but I still make out the shirtless figure of a man on the left side of the bed, lying on most part of the duvet with his big body. I spare only a little glance at him for me to realise its Duncan or Donald- I know its starts with a D- the drunk guy I was making out with before I had to puke. Against my better judgement, I decide to take the small space beside him as I can't fathom how I'd make it to the guest room with the pounding in my head.
His calloused hands reach for my exposed thighs with a disgusting smile on his lips, still drowsy from the effect of the alcohol. I almost gag as I throw his hand off, he falls asleep a second later
"Pathetic" I say
I take a proper look at his face that I now see due to the headlights shining from a car downstairs- the guy no even fine
I don't bother to change from my black leather dress even though its rather uncomfortable, I'll probably never wear it again. My eyes dart over to my empty suitcase at the foot of my bed, the clothes beside are literally begging to be folded so I don't throw them all in tomorrow in a rush when the driver calls to take me to the airport.
Let's hope Lagos is as fun as they claim
Continued from the last chapter...
AMANDA'S POV
(Amanda Aderinsola Akinde)
"Noel please assist me with this" a disgruntled voice says behind a heap of customised gift bags
"Yeah sure" he lifts himself of his seat in a swift motion and moves to relieve Toke of the burden she has in her hands, placing them on the floor beside her feet. She mutters a quick 'thanks'
She cranes her head round the deck checking if we are complete pausing to offer me a little smile as our eyes meet. She has her green varsity jacket on like mine, high-waisted jeans and a white crop top matching with her white sneakers
"Amir come and share the bags I'm not doing your job for you" she says sternly
"Aye aye captain"
The light skinned boy moves over to pick the white 'Drew' gift bags- our trip sponsor, handing one to each person, Noel assists him starting with the alternate row
He stretches two bags towards me, the other one for Aidan. The latter doesn't bother to Acknowledge Noel as he stands with his arm stretched, waiting to be responded to. My eyes naturally roll themselves as I intercept it and hand it over to the darker boy who's acting oblivious of what is going on in front of him. Noel smiles in appreciation as he walks back to his seat
I fix my gaze on Aidan's features and notice how irritated they look- don't need a soothsayer to tell me why
"Do you have a problem with Noel?" I ask, annoyance seeping through my voice
"I don't have a problem with anybody" he says nonchalantly
As you should, he's literally one of the sweetest people in the entire set- he and Nana would make the best combo
"Does it have to do with Nana?" I ask, testing my limits with him
He pauses with the flyer he's designing on his laptop for a moment then goes back
"I don't know" he says without looking at me
"Does he like her?" I whisper, unashamedly allowing curiousity cloud my tone
"Isn't that obvious? He's obsessed with her, always following her around and acting like he's her body guard" he hisses, not minding to mask his jealousy
"Are you jealous?" I ask, a smirk creeping out
"No"
Well that was straight forward
"She doesn't like him" he says firmly
Wahala wahala wahala
"Did she say that?"
"I know her and I know when she likes someone" I follow his gaze to where they are fixed
I can't blame these guys, my bestie is finee!
"She's just fooled by his good boy looks and his kind gestures and the way he's always asking 'how are you, did you sleep well, are you okay?" He mimics in the most puny voice he can make
"Why don't you ask her the same questions, see maybe they'll work too" he shoots me a sharp look, I clear my throat to conceal the mockery behind my comment
"Someone that doesn't even talk to me" he scoffs
"Do you like her?" I ask even though I appear to already know the answer, he still needs to say the words
He takes in a deep breath then lets it out
"Yes, yes I do" He says staring into the space ahead
A notification sound disrupts our conversation a bit, a little side eye and I pick the name of the sender 'Amaka ð«'. He takes a look at it then turns the phone face down
My insides immediately turn sour- out of every girl to rival in this world why Amaka??
Amaka has got nothing on Nana, looks- she's fine sha o- Nana is way more beautifuller if you know what I mean, brains- we don't even have to go too far there, popularity- literally everything
Asides assets sha, Amaka is what we call endowed. But then the beauty of a girl is in her heart right? Who cares about all those extra worldly details
I'm a terrible friend
"But you like Amaka" I continue my interrogation session
He sighs like he's heard it a million times, just like I expected
"No I don't" he groans "all of you keep saying that"
"Cos that's what you make it look like" I say, whisper yelling
"We're just friends okay"
"Friends with a history" I eye him, getting annoyed by the 'just friends' phrase
"Is that why she's acting weird?"
"She's not acting weird"
"Oh really, then what's with all the drama then?"
"Do you think you're all she thinks about?" I ask, prancing on his ego
He drags his palm down his face, massaging his jaws
"What does she want? What does she want me to do?" He asks, looking tired and frustrated at the same time
My mind drifts back to what she told me and what she constantly says, which might in actual sense be what's best for the both of them
"She wants you to leave her alone, to stop bothering her, you're confusing her" I tell him finally
He looks ahead at Nancy seated in front, completely oblivious of the conversation going on about her. I don't miss the look of longing in his eyes as they look back at me with one of emptiness
"That's not going to happen" he shuts his laptop then puts his headphones over his ears- silently ending our conversation- then leans back on his seat facing the ceiling
I process his words and stare at the face of the young man sitting next to me as he closes his eyes and opens his heart to the music playing through his headphones. Looking at Aidan Timini Aniye from the surface, you'd think that was all there was; the surface and superficial things. Getting to know him- even though I hardly know anything about him still- there's way more to him than the class clown who somehow manages to be a class topper and a star athlete
"Ladies and gentlemen, good morning , welcome on board. This is your captain speaking and I have some information about our flight. Our flight time today will be 11:15am and our estimated time of arrival is 12:30pm West African time.
Please take your seats and fasten your seatbelts, we are about to take off" the voice of the captain says through the speakers
No one was standing by the time the announcements came in, everyone already took their seats in exhaustion as we waited for takeoff to be announced. The plane wheels start to move, gaining acceleration with time
See you soon Lagos

THIRD PERSON'S POV
"Some students will be coming from Abuja to join us for the period of the competition. They are the students of Sheffield International High, last year's Decathlon winners. Treat them with hospitality and kindness, help them if they are in need and please ensure they all feel welcome" The principal says through the public address system
Members of the crowd squeal and shriek
"That school has many fine boys"
"And plenty fine girls too"
"And they are coming to our school!!"
"Silence everyone" the middle aged woman commands
"They'll be arriving today, be on your best behaviours and represent the school well"
The senior prefect leans in to whisper a detail she's forgetting into her ears
"Oh and lest I forget, all those not participating in the competition, ensure you remind your parents to come and pick you up from school for the mid term break, no one is staying back if they are not needed"
The murmuring increases, most expressing their displeasure while those staying back agree, pride worn on their features
"You are dismissed everyone, enjoy your break" she says finally as she climbs off the podium
Students evacuate the school hall in excitement to be going to their various homes. The brown skinned, 6 ft head of students takes a confident stand behind the mic as the students clear out, waiting for the last set of weeds to step out the door
"Gladiators" he calls
"Yes captain" they respond
"We know what we are about to face, we understand what is ahead of us" he gives them all a hard stare, a pin drop silence engraving the atmosphere
"Yes we will be hospitable and yes we will welcome them" he takes a dramatic pause "but do you know what else we will be doing?"
He looks over to his squad, the sardonic smile on his girl's face tells that she understands where this is going
"We'll show them we own this school"
The crowd cheers
"We'll show them we own the cup"
The crowd cheers louder
"And we'll show them Lagos owns Nigeria"
The crowd cheers its loudest, going wild with whistles and hoots

AMANDA'S POV
(Amanda Aderinsola Akinde)
"Gosh I'm so tireddd" Nana drawls as we both drag our suitcases
"Honestly ehn, this is why I hate travelling" I grunt as I extend the handle of the blue suitcase in my hand
I notice Erling catching up to us with his own suitcase so I increase my speed, leaving Nana behind to deal with the noodle head.
Espn walks past me, her steps effortlessly regal as her braids swing in directions following her steps. I crane my head wondering where her other half is, I literally forgot she could walk alone- eye roll
He appears to be intentionally lagging behind- hold that thought- I almost think I imagine the silent struggle as he lifts each foot to take a step until I notice it again and again. This boy might be going through a lot of other things but I'm damn sure he's going through some physical pain. Too much practice?
From their countenance, I deduce that they probably have an argument of some sort, the usual Espn I know would be by his side trying to get him to speak to her. That makes me even more worried- did she do something to him? I immediately shake the thought off my mind, among everyone Espn is by far the sweetest person to do such a thing
"Eko o ni baje o" Aidan says in his poor Yoruba intonation as we step out into the blinding sun
"I thought you were part Yoruba?" I ask
"Yes I am" he replies with full confidence
"What the hell was that?" I say in a mocking tone
"Leave me and my Yoruba alone" he says chuckling
"What you just said" Denola says as he puts an arm on his shoulder "wasn't Yoruba" he walks away laughing at him
I can't help but join in the laughter, mine exploding out because of the expression he has worn on his face
"I'll learn Yoruba one of these days, it will shock you people" he says after me as we walk further out to the parking lot
"We'll see"
"The bus should be around in about 10 minutes" Erling says to no one in particular, I don't bother turning to look
Coach Adams the basketball coach is in what appears to be a friendly conversation with our swim coach while Miss Ummy is on the phone with the principal, telling her we have arrived safely
Nana, Toke, Aidan, Erling, Espn and Noel are engaged in a conversation I don't pick because of how far apart we are, Eddy is speaking with the basketball team with so much authority you wouldn't guess he was the same person as 20 minutes ago. I awkwardly tap my feet on the tiled floors, sticking out like a sore thumb as usual. The revving of a vehicle engine drags my attention to the far end of the parking lot.
Is that- no it can't be, it just can't be
"Seems like the bus is here" Nancy alerts the rest of her team while my mouth hangs open short of words
"Attention everyone" Erling says, his voice drawing attention
"We will be staying at a school whose students are also participating in the decathlon so their school bus is here to take us to-" he reads out from the paper in his hand, I know what he's about to say from the famous calligraphy on the bus
"-Bolton High"
"Oh God" I let out a shaky breath
The bus stops right in front of us and my legs stay glued to the ground. I recognize the driver but I'm pretty sure it's not the same for him- not so surprising
Eddy and Espn start to take a head count of all of us as we step into the bus. I wait for everyone to go in, my eyes fixed on my shuffling feet. Erling goes in right in front of me, holding the door open for me to step in. It was a completely normal gesture for him- it's usually the door to the cafeteria or the class door- even when I'd be walking slowly behind him he'd still wait by the door so he could shut the door right behind me. I look up and immediately wish I didn't meet those sea blue eyes staring back at me, I break the discomforting stare and step into the bus without missing a step, settling down right beside Toke by the window
"Hey" I say
"Good morning" she says plainly, her eyes fixed on her iPad
I almost groan out loud, tired of the stupid back and forth attitude I've been having to put up with. I don't speak though, I have much bigger pressing issues on my mind
My mind flashes back to this time last year, when we were competing at the decathlon for the first time. Chris was so confident that day that we were going to win first place, wooping every other school's ass clean. We ended up coming a close third after Middleton, apparently we weren't cut out for quizzes and debates as we were for sports. Our school however, were more than elated when we came home with our medals for first place in basketball, second place in swimming, second place in sprints and overall third position in the decathlon. The school allowed an after party on its grounds, given that other students had gone home for the mid term break, we danced and sang and ate and drank- some of us drank caprisun- being our wild selves that night. Our bon fire was epic, I wouldn't have imagined that as my last school party with them
Maybe it won't be that bad, just a reunion with some of my old friends
"Gosh this is why I hate Lagos! Is the road ever free?" Nkechi yells in frustration from the backseat
I chuckle lowly at her comment- she never see anything
Amaka doesn't react to what her friend says but even with her sleeping blindfold on, I can tell she's wide awake. The basket ball coach Adams is seated beside the swim coach, his feet tapping on the floors. He appears to be even more nervous than his players, the swim coach on the other hand has the most nonchalant face in the world- as usual- I never saw the resemblance between him and the principal until few days ago when I learnt he's her elder brother, now I can't unsee it.
The loud marimba ringtone of my phone disrupts the silence in the bus, waking up a few. It's my mum calling- shoot I forgot to call her
"Hello Aderin" she says immediately as soon as I pick up
"Good afternoon mummy"
"How are you my baby" she asks
"I'm doing very fine mum, we are in Lagos already, still at Ikeja actually we left the airport about thirty minutes ago but the traffic is tight"
"I know you're in Lagos my dear, how else would we be talking" she laughs "I called your teacher first"
"Oh"
"Just wanted to know you're doing well, someone at the store asked of you so I decided to give a call"
"I'm alright, a little jet lagged but I'll make it" I say tiredly
"Good luck baby girl"
"Thank you" I say grinning, appreciating the wish of luck- I'll probably need it
"And remember to give your dad a call when you get there"
"Okay I will"
"Bye, I love you"
"Bye mum, I love you too"
"Bami ki ore e yen" she says
("Greet your friend for me")
"Okay she'll hear"
"And her brother"
"I will" that's obviously a lie, I know I won't
"And that your other friend that her mum likes coming to my store, that our neighbour" I give Toke a side glance, she already heard, there's no need to tell her twice
"I will"
"Have a good day muah" she blows a kiss through the phone
"You too mum" I say then wait for her to hang up
Three stressful hours later...
"God we are finally at the good part" Aidan exclaims to Amir
"It's already getting dark outside sef" Amir responds
"After spending how many hours on that stupid bridge, why not just build a second airport on the island or something" Aidan rolls his eyes
"How many airports do you have in Abuja?" I ask, defending my home city
"At least we don't go through all this every day because our roads can actually contain us" he shoots back
I stick my tongue out, no reply of mine would beat that
"Wait are you from Lagos?" Denaya asks, twisting in her chair to face me
"You didn't know?" I smile incredulously
"I know you lived there and transferred from there but are you actually from there?" Aidan asks
"Yes, yes I am" I reply, pride oozing from my voice
"Wow" Amir mouths
"Why did you even transfer?" I hear Amaka's voice for the first time today
I almost ignore her
"Yeah I've been meaning to ask, that couldn't have been convenient" Denaya pries, making it impossible to skip the question
"Uhm- uh- we moved to Abuja and I couldn't stay back because my parents don't really like the idea of me being in a boarding school" I reply, my eyes roaming as I spit lies
"And you just had to come to Sheffield" Amaka says sarcastically, obviously to get a reply from me
The crowd keeps quiet, probably expecting me to say something too
"We are here guys" Erling says from the front seat, saving me from further embarrassment
"Dayumm I didn't expect it to be this big" Aidan says quietly as we stop at the gate to be checked in by security
"They are hosting this year's competition, of course they have to be a bid deal" Amaka says, swinging her iPhone out of her purse to take pictures, probably sending snap streaks to the whole world
"Woah" Eddy says as we wheel into the compound
Nausea kicks in immediately, my walls of my stomach twist into knots as we drive by the cream coloured buildings further into the school
"Omo this school go get fine babes oh" Kylian says as he looks out the window licking his lips
"Ashawo dey your eye" Eddy says as he smacks the back of his friend's head
"Normal na" he responds in loud booming laughter
"Your babe still dey school oh" Amir laughs, referring to Aisha in SS2
"Make she maintain, she go dey alright" he dusts invisible dirt off his shirt and straightens his collar
"What happens in Lagos, stays in Lagos" another one of the basketball boys says making all of the hail in agreement
"Correct guyyy" Kylian says, encouraging the madness
Men are scorpions
Eddy shakes his head at his friends words, face palming while trying not to break out in laughter
"Isn't this your former school?" Toke says quietly besides me
I'm almost shocked by her question, then I remember I've mentioned the name of my school countless times to her
"Yep"
"You're nervous" she states
"You can tell?" I ask, letting out a shaky breath
"So can they" she gestures towards Erling and Nana, both staring at me
Nana gives a knowing smile, she probably knew we were coming here even before we left Abuja. I give her a stink eye which causes her to throw her head back in laughter
Maybe it won't be that bad actually, just a friendly reunion with some old buddies, fun
The bus comes to a stop right at the front of the hostels, everyone grabs their suitcases and bolts down in relief and excitement. The first person I sight as soon as I get up is Chris, he stands tall in front of the other Bolton students that were probably ordered to welcome us and show us our space. Kelly stands beside him, lips glistening from with excess lipgloss as usual, her school uniform standing just right on every part of her body. A part of me aches from how bad I've missed her, how bad I've missed them since six months ago when I last saw them
"You're not coming down?" Toke asks, waiting for me to leave the way so she can get down
I step aside so she can leave first, walking close behind her to draw some confidence. I keep my head low as we step out last behind the other students
"Welcome students and staff of Sheffield high" their Vice Principal's voice echoes, the coarseness making my ears bleed a bit
We chorus our replies to his greeting, sounding as exhausted as we look
The man goes on talking about the school and its history, giving everyone a brief orientation on the location of anything we may need
My eyes dart towards Kelly, our eyes meet for a second and my lips can't help but break into a smile, it's been so long. She looks away from me like she didn't even see me, I look away too in embarrassment hoping no one saw the exchange. I know she saw me though- I can tell- she just acted like she didn't recognize me
Ouch
There's pride and egocentricity oozing from both sides, from us and more strongly, them. There's this silent Face off going on between Erling and Chris standing opposite each other, both with extra straight backs as if they are extending their heights. Erling is obviously taller though, Chris is probably not an inch more than six feet. Amaka has Kelly in a bitch stare lock while Nkechi whispers something into her hear, giggling. Toke's stance beside me is pretty much normal for her, her back straight with her arms folded on her chest, boldly scanning her eyes through the crowd without feeling bothered. Trust Toke
Nana appears as sweet as ever, her natural smile on as she exchanges some words with those beside her. She taps her phone and my phone rings almost immediately, it's a WhatsApp message

I don't bother replying her last message before dumping my phone in my pocket, wheeling my suitcase into the hostel halls for the girls. The boys say their goodbyes as we part ways, Eddy leaning in to give his girlfriend a little side hug which she doesn't reciprocate. Noel pulls Nana into a warm hug which she accepts fully, patting his back in response as they hug for a few seconds longer. Aidan storms past them into the dorms, leaving Amaka hanging with her outstretched arms. The sight makes me want to burst out in laughter but I don't, out of how much embarrassment I feel on her behalf. Nana didn't see that but somehow I wish she did, she'd have rolled on the floor in laughter at Amaka's expense
Toke holds out a list of rooms and starts to give out keys to roommates
"We'll be having two of us and two students from this school in each room"
The crowd groans in displeasure
"Just try to tolerate them, we'll be fine" she assures
Aren't they the ones tolerating us?
I grin at Toke's comment, she doesn't return it
"Adetoke McAnthony, Amanda Akinde, R28" Toke says plainly
"We're in the same room" I say in excitement
She ignores, again. Amaka lets out her stupid laughter from behind me, causing my eyes to sting a bit. She carelessly wheels her suitcase down to her room, intentionally jabbing me with her shoulder as she walks past me
Toke folds her list, grabs our keys off the counter and wheels her maroon coloured suitcase, checking for our room number. My blood immediately starts to boil as I follow her down the hallway. Catching up is easy for me as I actually know where our room is, banging the door behind us when I enter
"What is the matter with you?" Toke asks, referring to the door
"What is the matter with me? I should be asking you that" I shoot back
She scoffs, proceeding to take her jacket off
"Toke" I call her name
"Yes"
"What's going on?" I ask, holding back the frustration in my voice
She walks towards me, side steps me only to walk out of the room
"I need to pee" she replies, barely audible
I mentally face palm at how differently she's acting, I bolt after her not planning to give up
With her quick steps, she gets to the lavatory on time, locking the door to the third stall as she uses it. I contemplate waiting outside for her to finish her business but then it would be easier for her to leave me hanging again, I'm done going in circles
I step in behind the door and cross my arms, waiting to hear the flush sound, it comes a minute later
She tries to mask her shock as she comes out but her expression betrays her, she walks towards the door- not today missy
I slam the door shut and lock it, removing the key from keyhole and throwing it in my pocket, zipping it shut
She rolls her eyes and folds her arms leaning on the wall, not bothering to talk. I slide down the wall and sit on the bare floor, crossing my legs. Two can play this game
Five minutes, ten minutes, twenty minutes pass and we stay there without a word
"Okay that's it, I have to go now" Toke props herself up from the floor
I get up too
"We are not leaving here till you talk to me" I reply, shaking my head
"Talk to you about what?"
"Everything" I yell "why you've been acting weird, why you don't talk to me, why my friend shut me out"
"I don't have anything to say"
"I know I might have said some stupid things I shouldn't have, I'm sorry I didn't mean anything of those things I said or did"
"Okay"
"Toke please" I put my palms together pleading "I can't keep doing this, you can't keep treating me like this"
"I've heard" she puts her hand out for the keys
"What is the matter with you?!" I raise my voice
"What do you want me to do?" She asks
"Be angry! Shout at me, tell me I'm a terrible person. I can't deal with this silent treatment anymore" I yell as tears start to fall from my eyes, I wipe a stray one with the back of my palm
"I have somewhere to be" she says simply
"You're so unbelievable Toke, what do you want me to do again?!" The tears fall freely now
How can she be so unbothered about all this?
"Will you open the door now?"
"Wow Toke" I dig into my pocket and hand her the keys
"Keep shutting people out okay" I say, anger seeping through my voice "that's why you don't have any friends"
I shouldn't have made the last statement, I just really wanted to get back at her for making me feel this bad and walking out on me
"What did you say?" She asks, squinting her eyes at me
"What? It's true, you told me yourself how you discarded your best friend when you both had a little fight"
"Don't say what you don't know Trip" she says, her last thread of patience about to cut
I decide to test her
"You push everyone away because you only want to care about yourself and your own feelings!"
"Stop it Amanda" she yells "just stop it"
"You think I like being alone?" For the first time, I notice her eyes glistening with unshed tears
"Yes I shut everyone out because its easier, that way I don't have to feel abandoned each time someone leaves"
"Toke-
"Are you the only one that has feelings? How do you think I felt when you completely forgot about me during the holidays?" Her voice breaks with emotions
"I texted you Toke"
"Oh please, you didn't even notice I was missing the party until I texted you that I couldn't come" she spits
"I'm sorry I-
"I shouldn't have been surprised though, you already got what you wanted, you passed your tests and exams brilliant, congratulations" she does a silent clap, wiping a tear with her index finger before it falls
"Why would you even say something like that?"
"Because that's how it is" she says, her voice dropping an octave lower
"Don't pretend like I'm part of your trio or like I'm Nancy, I know I'm not
I wanted a friend so bad that I thought somehow you were some last minute miracle and that we'd formed some kind of bond" she laughs as more tears fall from her eyes "Delusional as usual"
"Toke" I reach for her while she steps back, holding her hand out in front of her to stop me
"It's okay, it was all in my head" she wipes her tears as she pulls the door open, letting out a deep breath as she leaves the room
My throat stings bad from the tears I held throughout when she spoke. I never thought I'd ever see Toke shed tears in my life, never thought I'd do something bad enough to make her cry. More tears flow freely down my cheeks as I slide to the floor on my butt, letting sobs out
God, now I've really messed up
