Carter POV
Emerson was deep in sleep but I wasn't tired. I wanted to run. I needed too. It had been a while since the last time.
"Emerson wake up." I whispered to her.
She groaned for a bit before replying within the mind link.
"What is it Carter?" She asked.
"May I go for a run? My limbs are aching to do so. Plus it's night time so it's perfect timing." I replied as she slowly stirred awake.
"Alright alright. Let me get some clothes in a bag though. Can't risk ours tearing on accident and then be completely commando out in the woods." She said as she quietly got out of bed arranged some clothes and left the dorm.
Most nights me and Emerson were up. We preferred the night over the day. It was quieter and had less people around.
She made her way outside the academy. I thought I had felt someone staring up I shrugged it off as she ran into the woods.
"Alright go wild Carter." She said jokingly as I chuckled and took control.
I continued to run slowly bending down to the ground as I did so, our bones making cracking sounds as I went into form. This was why we loved the night.
Because we blended in with it.
My coat was jet black and my steps or rather our steps were always quiet. So unless the moon light gave us away or you were deliberately trying to find us. It was almost impossible for you to spot us.
I ran fast but calculated as I ran through the forest taking in every scent it produced. The night time was always the perfect time to learn your surroundings. It was better to do it alone anyway. No offense to Taylor though.
I ran and ran until I spotted a lake?
"Is that a lake?" Emerson asked as I got closer to take a better look at it.
"Yes. Yes it is." I answered as I made my way over and sat down near the water.
It was calm at first before I smelt it. A scent. It was someone's scent.
"Someone's coming I can hear them. Can you tell what they are?" Emerson asked as I tried to tell a difference.
"I can't." I answered as she nodded.
"Give me control. They won't attack if we're in human form." She said as I nodded taking a deep breath and handing over control as their footsteps got closer.
