âI hope you take it black.â
I look up, slowly pulling my eyes away from Taylorâs sleeping form in the hospital bed to look up at Annika. She makes a face.
âI couldnât find any sugar, and the milk in the nurses station lookedâ¦â She winkles her nose. âWell, curdled would have been an improvement.â
âBlack is fine,â I grunt. âThank you.â
She nods as she passes me the Styrofoam cup and sinks into the chair on the other side of Taylorâs hospital bed. Her eyes drop to her twin, a slightly worried expression on her face.
âYou saved her life, you know,â I growl quietly. âBoth of ours.â
Annika looks up, her mouth twisting. âOh, I donât know about that. You were Captain Hero jumping over fire with your damn organs practically falling out of a hole in your side.â
I smile wryly, glancing down at the bulge under my hospital scrubs top where the bandage is wrapped around my middle.
âYou were there, though,â I shrug, glancing back up at her. âYou pulled me back into consciousness.â
She nods, looking back at her sister.
âIâm not going to ask now,â I say cautiously. âBut I do want to know at some point how it is you were there.â My brow furrows. âNot to mentionâ ââ
âNine thousand other questions?â
âGive or take a thousand, yeah,â I grunt.
She smiles wryly, her gaze dropping back to Taylor.
âSheâs really going to be okay?â
I nod. âShe is.â
âAnd weâreâ¦â Annika glances nervously at the door to the hospital room.
âSafe here, yes,â I growl. âMy men are positioned all over this building. And besides, the guys at the local police department areâ¦friends.â
Annika smirks. âI bet they are.â
âWhat the fuck is going on,â I grunt.
She frowns. âI thought you werenât going to ask your nine thousand questions yet.â
âNot eight thousand, nine hundred and nintey-nine of them,â I mutter. âBut that one I need an answer to. And now would be best.â
Annika looks down, her lip catching in her teeth inâholy shit, a very Taylor wayâas her fingers twist.
âCould you be a little more specific, then?â
âFor startersâ¦â My eyes meet hers. âWho the fuck did I marry fifteen years ago.â
She smiles weakly. âHappy anniversary, dear.â
My face darkens.
âFor what itâs worth,â she says, âI had it annulled after I disappeared.â
âGood,â I grunt. A hint of smile touches my lips. âI did, too, actually.â
Annika laughs quietly.
âThatâll make for an interesting Christmas card.â
I smirk, shaking my head before I focus on her again. âWhat the hell happened to you that night? And Taylorâ ââ
âTatjana,â she says quietly. She reaches out and slips her hand into her sisterâs. âHer name is Tatjana. Orâ¦it was.â Her lips twist as she looks up at me. âWhat you really want to know is how, right? How thereâs two of us. How no one knewâ¦â
âI think that might be a good place to start.â
She nods, sipping her coffee with a grimace. I take a swig of mine, and scowl.
Yeah, it really is terrible.
âOur parentsâour father, especiallyâwere really protective. And a little paranoid.â She sighs. âOkay, a lot paranoid. There were constant threats against our dad and his extended family, and I guess it only got worse when he and our mom got married. So when they had usâtwins that no one expectedâthey made a decision toâ¦minimize risk.â
Holy shit.
âThey kept one of you a secret?â I murmur.
She nods slowly.
âWhen we were kids, it was a fun game, really. Some days one of us would get to play the princess, while the other stayed hidden out of sight. Other days, weâd switch. It wasnât that hard: our family was fairly reclusive, and we had all those walled grounds. Only our parents, our housekeeper, and our dadâs most trusted second-in-command, Ruslan, knew. Nobody else guessed. Thatâs how good we were at it.â
She exhales slowly.
âBut then you came along. Well, your family did. You were always our sworn enemies, and then suddenly one day, our father and yours were talking. We heard our parents discussing in hushed tones late at night about a truce. There was just one problem.â
âMy father thought there was only one Brancovich daughter,â I grunt. âAnd if there was a second oneâ¦â
She nods. âThen your family would probably not go ahead with the marriage. Because another daughterâ ââ
âMeant another alliance, potentially to a family mine was still in conflict with.â
âSee? I knew you werenât just a tough guy.â
I smirk. Then my smile fades as I turn to look at Taylor. I reach out and take her other hand in mine, squeezing.
âWhat the fuck happened that night,â I growl. âAnd how is it that youâre fine, and sheâs the one with no memory after the car crash?â
âFor a start, there was no car crash,â Annika murmurs. âMy sister was never on your island until you brought her there.â
