Mo Liuxi was disappointed. He hadnât had it for days. He had been looking forward to it since the night before.
âWhy did you sleep so late last night?â he asked.
âI was writing lyrics for Director Liâs new film,â Yan Su said with a yawn.
âLet me have a look.â Mo Liuxi stepped into the house.
Yan Su recalled his advice from the night before, so she willingly showed him what she wrote. She went to wash up and brush her teeth while he read her work.
Mo Liuxi briefly scanned through the lyrics. There were markings and annotations all over the paper, but he could tell that she was a sensitive artist. She grasped the crucial points he had mentioned and wrote the lyrics poetically.
âWhat do you think?â Yan Su poked her head out of her toilet as she was brushing her teeth. Her eyes were hopeful.
âItâs still lacking if you want to compete against Ye Yunyang and Pei Wei.â Mo Liuxi stood up to pour himself some milk.
Yan Su spat out her toothpaste and asked, âHow did you know that they were my competitors?â
Mo Liuxi paused with the cup in his hand and calmly replied, âI chatted with some of my friends in the industry and heard about it.â
Yan Su didnât doubt him. She asked, âWhich part is lacking?â
âBeg me.â Mo Liuxi looked over at her.
Yan Su inhaled sharply and said, âI think youâre drinking my milk.â
She thought, How can he ask her to beg him when he was at my place drinking my milk? What kind of person is he?
âHmm, I was pouring you some milk, so I poured myself a cup as well,â Mo Liuxi matter-of-factly said.
âWell, I really have to thank you then,â Yan Su said as she gritted her teeth.
If not for the fact that he gave her some advice the night before, she really wanted to chase him out of her house with a broom.
âYouâre welcome.â Mo Liuxi laughed as he watched her cheeks angrily puff up. âForget it, on the account that weâre good neighbors, Iâll tell you. Your lyrics are too artistic and abstract. People might not relate to it.â
âDirector Li has quite a similar sense of artistic direction,â Yan Su said. âIâve listened to the theme songs of his films in the past...â
âHe used to be like that, but his tastes have changed over the years,â Mo Liuxi said. He watched as Yan Suâs eyes lit up.
âYou know Director Li?â Yan Su looked at him with newfound respect.
âIs that strange? The circle is only this big after all. I wonât help you with my connections though. You should earn the gig by your own virtue.â Mo Liuxi turned and took a sip of milk.
âI didnât ask you to help me,â Yan Su said with a pout. âWill you put me down?â
Mo Liuxi was upset. âWhy would I do that for? Think what you want of me.â
He ignored her after that and sat down to eat his breakfast.
When Yan Su changed and walked into the living room, he was already gone. There was a cup of milk for her on the table, but it had gone cold.
...
Over the next few days, Yan Su was focused on writing the song. Sometimes when Mo Liuxi walked past the music classroom, he would see her playing the guitar alone in the studio.
Once when he walked by, Yan Su stopped him and asked, âDo you want to hear the song?â
âDo you want me to give you advice?â Mo Liuxi asked. He proudly walked and pulled a chair to sit opposite her. He sat with his legs crossed. âPlay then.â
Yan Su closed her eyes and ignored how arrogant he looked. She started playing the guitar.
A ray of sunlight fell on her black hair as she peacefully sang the song. Her head was lowered, and her face was pale and pretty. Her lashes turned golden as they caught the sunâs rays. Her lips were moving gracefully as she sang the song with her beautiful voice.
