Chapter 12 Divorce
Avery frowned and said coldly, âContinue. What happened to Ms. Sheridan?â
Maryâs gaze was a little evasive. She continued in a low voice, âI was outside just now. I saw Ms.
Sheridan stepping on the back of Ms. Garciaâs hand with her high heels. She even kicked Ms. Garcia to
the ground. She also verbally attacked Ms. Garcia.â
The first half of the sentence might be possible, but for the second half, Avery could be sure that it was a
lie.
When Vivian held the umbrella for Darlene, Avery saw it from the window of the bedroom upstairs.
He could not see whether Vivian stepped on Darleneâs hand.
But she did not kick Darlene.
Mary stole a glance at Avery with a guilty conscience and saw Averyâs expression darken. âWho allowed
you to slander Vivian like this? What exactly is your purpose? Or did you receive orders from someone?â
Mary immediately panicked and hurriedly apologized, âMr. Gallard, I was
forced to do this!â
Anger appeared on Averyâs face as he hurried towards Vivianâs bedroom.
âMary, youâd better make it clear. Otherwise, you wonât find a job in Baltimore or even in this country.â
A faint smile appeared on Maryâs lips as she quickly followed Avery.
Darlene knelt in the heavy rain. She was on the verge of breaking down.
The front entry was locked. Avery was staying with Vivian now and would no
longer waste time on Darlene.
Darlene took out her phone with great effort and wiped the water stains on the screen. Fortunately, it was
still available.
Her heart was in great pain and she had already begun to cough up blood. A heart attack could cause
sudden death at any time.
Darlene could not die. She had to take care of her younger brother and grandmother.
Darleneâs hands trembled as she looked through the address book. In the end, she had no choice but to
dial Nathenâs phone number.
When the call connected and Darlene said âDr. Elicottâ, her ears buzzed and
she fainted.
When she woke up, she was lying on the hospital bed. Her arms and neck were wrapped in bandages,
making her look like a mummy.
Nathen was dressed in a white coat. He sat beside her bed and looked at her with a serious expression.
It seemed that he was going to investigate her.
Darlene struggled to open her eyes. When she saw Nathen, she greeted him,
âDr. Elicott.â
Nathen had carefully disinfected and treated all the injuries on her body. Even a doctor like him who had
seen many injuries was shocked to see her
like this.
There were too many wounds on her body.
Her skin was burnt and bruised. Some wounds were caused for no reason.
Darlene touched the phone at the bedside and looked at it. There were more
than ten missed calls from Avery.
She felt a little uneasy and explained in a low voice, âItâs nothing. I was
carelessâ¦â
Nathen said in a deep voice, âYou wonât tell me that you accidentally
knocked into the table and hurt your head. The water on the table was
knocked over and scalded you. The foot of the table just happened to step on the back of your hand,
right?â
Darlene could not find a more reasonable excuse for a moment, so she
nodded. âMore or less.â
Nathen said solemnly, âDarlene, Iâm not joking with you. What is it? Your husband didnât hit you, right?â
It was domestic violence. To hurt the wife without dealing with her wounds,
Avery was a scum.
Darlene did not want others to know about her awkward situation. She was
already very grateful that Nathen could save her this time.
But if she complained to him again and let him feel sorry for her, it would
most likely implicate him.
Nathen had a good family background, but Darlene knew that it was almost impossible for him to fight
against Avery.
Moreover, it wasnât Nathenâs business. He didnât have to interfere with Darleneâs matter.
Darlene shook her head and forced out a smile. âMy bad. I forgot to bring the key last night and
happened to have a heart attack. It was not as you imagined, Dr. Elicott.â
Nathen wasnât convinced. âFortunately, I went to your home and found you smoothly. If you hadnât
received treatment in time, you could have lost your
life.
âMoreover, when I went to your home, I saw that the lights were on. Are you sure you did not bring the
key? Didnât your husband shut you out?â
As Nathen spoke, he took out his phone and sent her a business card. âDarlene, you canât be too softâ
hearted. This is a society ruled by law. Even though you get married, you can still get a divorce.
Domestic violence is against the law. This is Barrett Frederickâs business card. If you need it, I can help
you tell himâ¦â
Before he finished speaking, footsteps came from outside, accompanied by Averyâs voice. âWhy didnât
you tell me that you came to the hospital? Iâve
been looking for you.â
Darlene had just woken up not long ago. When she heard this voice, she unconsciously grabbed the quilt
and wanted to retreat.
Fear and resistance could not be faked. Nathen could tell at a glance that Avery did not treat Darlene
well.
Avery came in, followed by Vivian and Mary.
He looked at Darlene on the bed. âIâm asking you a question. Why didnât you
tell me that you came to the hospital?â
He glanced at Nathen. Sure enough, it was this doctor again!
Nathen took the report and asked Avery, âMs. Garciaâs heart disease is very serious. As her husband,
how can you let her suffer such a serious injury in the rain?â
Avery kept thinking that Nathen directly took Darlene away in the afternoon.
Now Nathen was protecting her. As for the medical report, Avery didnât care about it. He knew that
Darlene had heart disease, but it was not too serious. He did not take it seriously.
Darlene took the report from Nathenâs hand and put it on the bedside table, signaling Nathen to stop
talking.
She knew that Avery would not care. He hoped that she would die to atone for her sins, so why should
Darlene let him know that she was not going to live for long and let him and Vivian have a chance to
laugh at her?
Avery looked displeased and became rude. âThanks for treating my wife. Dr. Elicott, we need a private
conversation. Please go out.â
Nathen frowned. âSince you know that she is your wife, why did youâ¦â
A nurse rushed in from outside. âDr. Elicott, the operation is about to start.â
Darlene said, âIâm fine, Dr. Elicott. You can go back to your work.â
They were in the hospital after all, so Avery could not touch her no matter
what.
Nathen looked at Avery with disgust and then looked at Darlene. âI have an operation in the morning. I
will give my phone to another doctor. If you need anything, call me. My colleague will come immediately.â
Darlene nodded. âOkay, thank you.â
As soon as Nathen went out, Avery sneered, âDarlene, you are disgusting. You seduced a doctor and
greased a nurseâs palm. Tell me, what should I do
to you?â
When Mary heard this, she approached the bed and grabbed Darleneâs hand in panic. âMs. Garcia,
please save me. Mr. Gallard found out that I lied to
him. You said that you would save me if something happened.â
Darlene frowned and pulled her hand out. âWhat are you doing?â
Mary blurted out, âMr. Gallard, I didnât lie. It was Ms. Garcia who gave me 17 thousand dollars. She
asked me to step on her hand and then frame Ms. Sheridan. Ms. Garcia knew that my daughter was
seriously ill and needed money. Mr. Gallard, I had no choice. I didnât think about it clearly.â
As she spoke, she even flipped out the transfer record and showed it to
Avery.
Darlene looked at the transfer record and sneered, âThis account is not mine at all. Moreover, Avery,
youâre clear about whether I have 17 thousand dollars or not. All of my bank cards have been suspended
by you. Not to mention 17 thousand dollars, I couldnât even afford 1,700 dollars.â
Mary did not expect that Darlene would not even have 17 thousand dollars. Vivian was also a little
surprisedâ¦
