Chapter 23
âI thought you were here tonight to make a scene, but it turns out you were setting a trap. Taylor, youâve really grown a lot.â
His voice was even lower than before, almost seeming like he was commending me.
However, I was aware this was far from a compliment, especially given his usual disdain for me. How could he genuinely praise me?
âOn another note, I came across a new script titled âAlluring City that seems quite promising.
âGiven Holmes Groupâs capabilities, wouldnât it be more strategic to focus on a project with broader appeal?â I suggested, hoping to soothe his anger.
âYou havenât been on the job long, yet youâre surprisingly wellâinformed,â he retorted, eyeing me coldly.
His piercing gaze seemed to scrutinize every inch of my face. It was as if he could see right through me, aiming to dissect my every cell.
âHavenât you always advised me to focus on improving myself instead of hanging onto you? Iâm merely taking your advice to heart,â I said, deliberately tracing circles on his chest.
Despite not being naturally inclined to seduction, my past lifeâs obsession with romance dramas had taught me a few tricks.
It seemed a touch of flirtation indeed had its effects.
The frost in his eyes visibly thawed as he gently inquired, âReally? Had you become so compliant now?â
âYes, my dear,â I replied with a slight smile, meeting his gaze with an air of innocence.
I had made an effort with my makeup today, opting for a subtle yet defining look, particularly around my
eyes.
My eyes, large and dark, had always been praised for their lively sparkle.
Yet, their vibrance diminished in the past, dulled by the continuous sorrow I bore for Gordon.
The sparkle in my eyes had returned after my heart was freed.
In that moment of eye contact with Gordon, I could feel a flash of light in his eyes. Simultaneously, his hand tightened around my waist.
My slender waist was firmly held in his embrace, our posture highly intimate.
Lately, the physical closeness between us seemed to have increased.
âThat drama is a mustâhave for me. You can cancel your deal with Mr. Morton, and Iâll handle the penalty,â he proposed, attempting a compromise but still exuding his usual authoritative air.
He had always been this way, insisting on acquiring what he desired at all costs.

However, I was equally resolved to secure this drama for myself now more than ever since it was already within my reach.
âWhy not let this project go to me? Letâs not compete over it, shall we?â I reasoned.
If toughness wouldnât work, then it was time for a softer approach.
To persuade him, I playfully wrapped my arm around his neck, mimicking Noraâs flirtatious tone.
A coldness settled in his eyes as I reached out. The moment my hand brushed the back of his neck, a barely perceptible tremor ran through him.
He looked at me with a halfâsmile, and for some reason, the man who always had cold words for me was exceptionally patient tonight.
*I can give you anything else with ease, but I never back down in business. And I particularly hate being manipulated,â he stated, unwilling to budge from his stance.
Frustration bubbled inside me.
I withdrew my hand, pretending to be angry. âHolmes Group has plenty of projects. Missing out on this small one wonât make a difference. Youâre clearly doing this for Nora, that bitch!â
âSo what if Lam? Does that make you jealous?â he challenged.
I
âItâs exactly because I know your motive that Iâm even less likely to hand it over. Gordon, thereâs no point in discussing this further.â
Despite reassuring myself to remain indifferent, his admission still struck me sharply, like a needle
stabbing my heart.
Anyway, I had the contract, and it was already effective. Everything was set in stone.

Suddenly tired of the argument, I pushed him away and turned to leave the private room with my bag in
hand.
As I started to pull back, his hand unexpectedly closed around mine. His voice turned noticeably colder.
