âWhatâs he talking about?â Ivy grumbled, clearly not pleased.
I looked down, took a moment to think, then got up and headed over to the man.
âWho are you? What is going on? Why do you keep saying someone is dead? Did you witness it yourself?â
I could sense that men didnât have good intentions, but this type of negativity wasnât about stirring up trouble on purpose.
It felt more like he just had some issue with me.
But I didnât do anything to him.
Why was he against me?
Naturally, Caleb also felt that something wasnât right.
When I got up, he trailed closely behind me, just a few feet away.
With him nearby, I knew he could step in if anything went south.
It gave me a comforting sense of security knowing he was there.
âActually⦠The man seemed a bit on edge at first.
But when he caught sight of Caleb behind me, his expression eased up a bit.
Yet, there was still a hint of fear lingering in his eyes.
â
The man pointed behind him, trembling, and said, âIâm Zeke Morrison.
This morning, while I was doing my morning workout in the square, I stumbled upon a corpse in the forest behind.
It was a gruesome sight, definitely not a werewolf attack.
The body was enough to give anyone nightmares at first glance.
Iâve never seen such a terrifying sight before.
â
A corpse?
My heart clenched, and a wave of unease washed over me.
Could it possibly be
I pushed the unsettling thought aside, trying to stay composed as I pressed on.
âSo why didnât you call the police?â
Zekeâs eyes widened with fear as he quickly swallowed.
âI⦠I was so terrified, I could barely stand straight.
I panicked and ran home, too scared to even think about calling the police.
When I heard about the meeting, I figured even if the killer was there, they wouldnât dare to strike with so many people around.
So, I gathered my courage and came rushing in.
â
I checked out Zekeâs outfit and confirmed he was indeed in sportswear.
But I couldnât wrap my head around why he gave me that wary look if he was telling the truth.
Hadnât he snapped out of it yet? Orâ¦
Just as I was getting puzzled, the unease among the alphas interrupted my thoughts.
One of them asked, âIf it wasnât a werewolf, then what was it?â
Another chimed in, âYeah, and weâve never had any strange murders in the Thorn Edge Pack.
This personâs death is just too weird.
â
âCould it really be connected to that rift? Itâs so bizarre.
Gale made it, and thereâs a chance some deadly creatures might come out of it,â another person added, sounding uneasy.
As more people started suspecting and making wild guesses, I frowned, feeling my heart sink as if it were tied to a massive stone.
In this situation, there was no point in continuing the meeting.
It wouldnât help with the rift issue, and it would just stir up needless panic, making things worse.
Caleb and I exchanged a glance, and I reassured everyone, âEveryone, weâre wrapping up todayâs meeting due to some unexpected event.
We appreciate your understanding.
Please head back for now.
If thereâs any news, Caleb and I will keep you updated.
â
Caleb nodded along with me.
âThe murder case came out of nowhere, and there are a ton of questions surrounding it.
Weâve got to handle this investigation with caution.
And as for the rift, none of the packs have much info on it yet, so thereâs no use banging our heads against the wall trying to figure it out now.
You guys head back and handle the investigation on your end.
If anything major goes down, weâll arrange for another meeting to discuss it.
