Debraâs POV:
âWhat? Adam wants you to take care of Riley?â Harlanâs eyebrows shot up in shock.
âDoes that mean you wonât be able to enter Adamâs office again?â
I lowered my head, feeling depressed.
âYes.
â
Harlan fell silent for a while and then sighed.
âFine.
â
He Leaned back and ran his fingers through his hair, frowning slightly.
âIâve reported everything that has happened to Gale.
Sheâs not surprised at our progress.
â
âWhat else did she say?â I asked, sitting up straight.
âShe said that Adam has always been difficult to deal with, and she asked us to be careful not to expose ourselves.
â
âThatâs it? Thatâs all she said?â I felt a Little confused.
âWhat should we do next? I wonât be able to get any more information in Adamâs office from now on.
â
Harlan, on the other hand, didnât seem to be as pessimistic as me.
He said calmly, âLetâs just wait and see.
If our efforts here are futile, weâll return to the Xeric Pack as soon as possible.
Gale said that we canât expose our identities to Adam no matter what happens-even if the mission fails.
â
My heart sank.
Although the mission wasnât officially a failure yet, it would be extremely difficult going forward.
As the person who was supposed to have access to the confidential documents, I was isolated outside the office building.
What were we going to do?
Obviously, Harlan shared the same thoughts as me.
After a long pause, he asked hesitantly, âDebra, maybe we should just retreat.
If we leave now, we can get out of this place unscathed, and our identities will still be intact.
â
I shook my head stubbornly.
âHarlan, our investigation may not seem hopeful right now, but I donât want to give up just yet.

If we retreated now, who knew what would happen next? If Caleb was right and Roz Town was becoming more dangerous, then what would happen to the residents living here?
As outsiders, we could get out of here unscathed, but what about them? This was their home.
Where would they go?
âDebra, just think about Elena.
â Harlan tried to reason with me.
âItâs already difficult enough to evacuate with a child.
The longer we stay, the more dangerous it will be for all of us.
Perhaps weâll be trapped here forever.
â
Harlanâs words took me by surprise.
I looked at him incredulously and murmured, âHarlan, youâve become much more human lately.
â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âWell, the old you wouldnât have cared about Elenaâs safety.
â
Harlan turned his head away and mumbled, âOh, I guess I was affected by your kindness.
â
Hearing this, I couldnât help but crack a smile.
Anyway, this change was for the better.
And Harlan was right.
Elena was indeed my biggest weakness.
Perhaps retreating now was our best option
After discussing things further, Harlan and I decided to take actions separately.
