âWhat? You lost the baby? Are you serious?â
Caleb stared at me blankly.
âYou have to understand-I was out in the wild, surviving on my own.
Pain and suffering filled my days.
My health declined, and I ended up losing the baby,â I explained, feigning a sad expression.
All the color drained from Calebâs face.
In the blink of an eye, the pure joy from earlier disappeared, replaced with hopeless sadness.
He didnât say anything for a long time.
He frowned tightly, as though he was in a lot of pain.
Finally, he sighed and said, âI see.
This whole time, I thought Iâd be able to see my child for the first time, but⦠I never thought that the child didnât make it.
â
As he spoke, he turned his face away from me, as though he didnât want me to see how much pain he felt.
My heart sank.
After all, half of the lie was true.
I did lose a baby boy at that time.
The pain of Losing a child had never left me, even after all these years.
âHow could you lie to your mate Like that?â Ivy wasnât satisfied with the way I handled things.
âCaleb is Elenaâs father.
He has the right to know the truth!â
âNo, Ivy.
I canât tell him, no matter what.
â I shook my head.
âWhy not?â Ivy pouted.
âCanât you see? Caleb was so excited to meet Elena just now.
If he knows that she is alive and well, he will take her to the Thorn Edge Pack.
â
âHavenât you ever considered that heâll bring you to his pack, too?â âIvy, have you forgotten? Heâs going to marry Janiya.
Do you want Elena to suffer the same fate as me and be bullied by her stepmother?â

Eventually, Ivy fell silent.
It started to rain.
The children were ushered back inside their classrooms, and Elena disappeared from sight.
Only then did I sigh in relief.
Fortunately, Caleb didnât see her.
I wanted to go back to the car, but Caleb seemed to be too immersed in his own thoughts to even notice that it was raining.
He simply buried his face in his hands in silence, letting the rain soak into his clothes.
He didnât raise his head until I touched his shoulder gently.
âDebra, you mustâve been so hurt.
â
When he looked at me, I saw that his eyes were red, and he seemed to feel genuinely sorry for me.
