Huh? What was going on?
Just as I was about to put the phone down resignedly, the call finally connected.
âHello?â It was a manâs voice.
The next second, Harlanâs face appeared on the video call.
After a second of stunned silence, I asked, âHarlan, why do you have
Galeâs phone? Where is she? Is she okay?â
Harlanâs expression darkened.
âBad news, Debra.
Gale was poisoned Last night, and she still hasnât woken up.
â
My eyebrows shot up in surprise.
âWhat? How?â
Harlan snorted angrily.
âAdam mustâve coordinated with another pack to poison her!â
âJesus!â Riley was even more shocked than I was, so even her elegant, dignified self couldnât help but curse.
Overhearing Rileyâs voice, Harlan stiffened.
But I had already told him that Riley was on our side now, so he gradually relaxed.
He continued, âI proposed that we have Adam assassinated, but before
Gale passed out, she rejected my idea.
Instead, she ordered me to stall for time.
At the very least, I wasnât supposed to let the crisis break out at the carnival.

âBecause thereâ1l be tons of people in town by then, right?â I mused.
âYes.
Many outsiders will be coming to the carnival.
If weâre not cautious enough, we might hurt some big shot.
By then, a war between the packs will be inevitable.
â
After thinking for a while, I said, âBut thereâs a problem.
If Adam decides on a buyer after comparing their offers at the carnival, the town will be in danger.
â
âThen you have to find a way to buy us time, Debra.
â
Speaking of this, Harlan seemed to have remembered something.
He said to Riley, âRiley, can you give me and Debra a moment? I need to talk to her about something.
â
âNo problem.
â
Riley politely gave us some space.
Debraâs POV:
When Riley was out of earshot, Harlan told me in a low voice,
âActually, Gale wanted to offer you a second choice.
â
âWhat choice?â I asked in confusion.
