Elena was busy chatting with Caleb when from the corner of my eye, I saw Luca jump out of his bumper car quickly.
He had seized an opportunity to escape.
âLuca!â I yelled.
The officers around us noticed Lucaâs attempted escape and hurried to catch up with him.
I also wanted to chase him, but Caleb grabbed my arm firmly.
âWhere do you think youâre going?â Caleb asked angrily.
I pointed in the direction Luca had run and retorted, âCanât you see?
Lucaâs getting away!â
Calebâs frown deepened.
âDo you think those officers are incapable of catching a child? Why do you have to follow them? Debra, donât you know which is more important right now?â
Although I was worried that Luca would get away, I realized his escape was futile, what with the policemen following him.
Thinking of this, I acquiesced.
I took a deep breath and faced Caleb with a serious expression.
âI know what youâre thinking, and donât worry.
Iâll give you a proper explanation, I promise.
â
The tension in the atmosphere was abruptly Lifted when I felt a small hand tugging at my arm.
Elena looked at Caleb and me and asked innocently, âCan I have ice cream?â
Caleb and I exchanged helpless glances.
In the end, Caleb chose to compromise.
Instead of interrogating me on the spot, he took me and Elena to the nearby ice cream shop.

As soon as we approached, the shop assistant asked with a bright smile,
âWhat can I get you?â
âVanilla-flavored ice cream!â Elena and Caleb said in unison.
The shop assistant couldnât help but burst into giggles.
âLike father,
Like daughter!â
When I saw how alike the two were, I fell into a tranceâ¦
Calebâs POV:

The world around us shimmered, ethereal and weightless, as though we were floating on a billowy cloud.
Memories long neglected surged forth, flooding my consciousness.
