My face was devoid of expression as I asked, âHow do you expect me to believe you after you abandoned me and almost murdered me because of othersâ gossip?â
My retort left my father dumbfounded.
Noticing the tension between my father and me, Caleb hurried to smooth things over and said, âHow about we go for dinner now? My mother has prepared a large spread for us.
Itâs time for Elena to come back from school too.
We will pick her up on the way.
â
My fatherâs attitude softened.
Glancing around, he asked, âWhere is Elena?â
He probably thought Elena was close and looked around eagerly.
âShe is still in the kindergarten.
Once we pick her up, weâll go have dinner together,â Caleb answered with a smile.
âSounds good!â
My father agreed immediately, a smile gracing his serious face.
When my fatherâs attention was diverted, I covertly kicked Caleb and warned him in a whisper, âDonât interfere, Caleb.
â
Caleb had an innocent expression as he said in an aggrieved tone, âIâm extending the most basic courtesy of entertaining guests.
Do you want to send your father away without treating him to a meal?â
I was still deeply upset.
âThen you shouldnât just allow him to meet Elena so easily.
What if he doesnât come with good intentions but actually has an ulterior motive?â
Caleb looked helpless.
âBut if your father goes back without having dinner, my mother will scold me heavily.
After all, he just restored your dignity and landed a blow on the Barton family.
If you let him leave like this, people will complain that our family is rude.
â
After listening to Calebâs persuasion, I finally pushed away the urge to tell my father to leave.

âMommy! Daddy!â
Not long after the bell rang, Elena emerged from the gate of the kindergarten and skipped happily towards us.
As she approached, she noticed my father standing beside us.
She shifted directions slightly and fixed her bright eyes on him.
âGood afternoon, Grandpa!â Elena greeted him happily.
Before I could stop her, she bounded over to my father and said sweetly, âGrandpa, I havenât seen you in a very long time.
I want a hug!â
My father was clearly flattered, but at the same time, he didnât seem to know how to react.
âBaby, donât you hate me?â he asked cautiously.
Elena shook her head.
âI heard on the way to the kindergarten this morning that you punished the bad guy who bullied Mommy.
Youâre so cool, Grandpa! Now, I Like you very much!â
