Then there were some rustling sounds in the background, quickly followed by a howl from Brian.
âMelany, calm down!â Brianâs voice was full of horror.
âYouâre still holding the needle for stitching up wounds! If you stab me, Iâll die With a cold snort, Melany spat mercilessly, âYou deserve to die! Iâm going to stitch your mouth shut so that youâll stop snitching on me to Caleb.
â
Then, another round of rustling and wails came from the other end of the line.
I figured that since Melany was busy teaching Brian a lesson, she probably forgot that she was still on the phone with me, so I hung up.
Chuckling, Caleb remarked, âAfter Melany and Brian divorced, they stopped talking to each other.
Itâs nice to see that theyâre getting along well these days.

Caleb frowned.
âWhat makes you say that?â

âI donât have any evidence, but both Brian and Melany said that they think it was Denise who tampered with Dylanâs treatment.
She was the only one with him whenever his condition suddenly worsened.
And now that Denise isnât allowed to enter Dylanâs ward these days, his condition has been very stable.
â
Calebâs expression darkened.
âBut how could anyone treat their own child like that? She carried Dylan in her belly for nine months and gave birth to him.
Shouldnât she love him and want to protect him?â
That was exactly what I couldnât figure out.
How could a mother be willing to use her sonâs life as a bargaining chip to keep the childâs father under a leash?
Wait a secondâ¦
An incredible but reasonable thought crossed my mind.
âWhat if Denise isnât Dylanâs mother?â
