Chapter 20: Chapter 20

My Best Friend's BrotherWords: 8706

Abby's POV

I heard the doorbell ring and my heart literally skipped a beat as I gasped and jumped on my bed.

“Abby!” mom yelled, probably leaning against the door frame and giving a polite smile to the person on the other side of the door.

“Yeah?” I yelled back, feeling my dumb heart’s pace quicken.

“Erica and Ashley are here to see you!” she exclaimed.

My shoulders sank and I glanced at the clock. It was only six and I was already ready and eagerly waiting for Michael.

“Send them up!” I responded.

After a minute, Ashley walked into my room followed by Erica. I smiled at them.

“Please tell me you’re not wearing that on the date,” Ash said, sitting down and gesturing towards my clothes. I look down at myself. What’s wrong with my clothing? I was wearing denim shorts over a pair of semi sheer black tights and a cute, sparkly baby blue sweater with white snowflakes imprinted on it.

“Well, you dressed me up so much for my date with-” she stopped mid-sentence as if she was recalling something.

“Jared,” Erica finished softly.

“Wear a pretty dress!” Ash said, ignoring Erica.

“You want me to wear a dress?” I asked, raising my eyebrows. “It’s freezing!”

“She looks good,” Erica said, rolling her eyes.

“Fine,” Ash said, fiddling with her phone.

Before I knew it, it was six thirty and I kept glancing at my phone in hopes of a text or a phone call from Michael saying that he was here.

“Someone’s getting desperate,” Erica said with a cough.

“Totally,” Ash agreed, giving Erica a grin.

I rolled my eyes. “I have every right to be eager. I’ve liked this guy for god knows how long.”

“Oooo,” Erica and Ash cooed together.

At that precise moment, the doorbell rang. Ash started laughing as I jumped off my bed and ran downstairs.

“I’ve got it,” I told dad, who was about to get up to head towards the door.

I opened the door, panting and saw Michael standing in front of me dressed in black jeans and a really cute grey shirt and black leather jacket. I felt myself smile; I always loved the simplicity Michael carried with him.

“Hi,” he said, breaking the silence.

“Hey,” I said with a bright smile.

He handed me yellow roses with red tips. “Beautiful flowers for a beautiful girl.”

I blushed and thanked him. Roses have always been my favourite flowers and I knew the exact meaning of the roses he gave me. Yellow roses with red tips mean ‘falling in love.’

“Abby? Who is it?” mom asked, nearing me.

“Uh-It’s Michael,” I said as Ash and Erica came down.

“Michael!” Ash exclaimed.

“Hey Ash,” he mumbled, giving her a closed-mouth smile.

“Ah, Michael,” dad said, interrupting us.

I groaned inwardly. Perfect timing. Everyone just had to barge in.

“We’re going to go back home now,” Erica said, leaving the room after saying bye to my mom and dad.

“You two have fun,” Ash said, winking at me. I returned her wink with a glare.

“I want you to get Abby back home safely by eleven, young man,” dad said, patting Michael’s back a bit too hard.

“Yes, sure,” he replied instantly.

“Bye dad,” I said and walked out with Michael.

“Sorry about that,” I said as we neared his car.

He chuckled, his dimples appearing and making him look cuter. “It’s alright.”

*

“Where are we going?” I asked again. We were definitely out of town so I didn’t know where we were going. “Michael, I swear, it seems like you’re going to kidnap me and then threaten my parents.”

He laughed.

“Michael, tell me,” I whined.

He continued laughing and I groaned.

“Give me a clue?” I asked, trying to use my puppy dog face, which didn’t work well since he started laughing again.

“Nope,” he replied, giving me a cheeky grin.

“This is unfair,” I grumbled.

I saw a mischievous yet cute smile on his face and felt myself blush. Honestly, it didn’t really matter where we went as long as we were together but the curiosity was killing me.

“We’re here,” he announced, killing the engine.

“What? Really?” I asked, sitting up straight to see the view in front of me. It was quite dark.

“Yup,” Michael responded and got out the car.

Taking the roses with me, I got out of the car too and found myself standing on sand. I could hear the soft waves splashing and I smiled as I realized we were on a beach.

“A beach,” I said softly, smiling.

“Yes,” Michael whispered, his lips touching my ear.

I gasped and turned to see him. His vibrant blue eyes stared into mine. We were extremely close and our lips were almost touching. He cleared his throat and I moved away. He took my hand in his and we walked further down the beach. His tender hands sent tingles through my entire body, making me feel giddy. He stopped and bent down to spread out a picnic mat.

My eyebrows shot up. “Quite impressive.”

“Impressing you is my first priority today,” he said, winking at me.

Shaking my head with a smile, I sat down next to him. I stared at the dark scenery ahead of me. It’s fascinating how everything differs so much in daylight and moonlight. The dark waves crashed on the shore with a lot of force but were pulled back with the same amount of force too. Everything felt eerie.

I noticed that there were only a few people on the beach. I saw a group of people laughing and enjoying themselves around a barbeque with smoke surrounding them, a couple walking hand in hand on the shore of the beach with their pants folded up and a little boy running around with a kite.

“What are you looking at?” Michael asked.

I glanced at him and said, “You.”

He chuckled. “No, what were you looking at before?”

“Nothing, just the people,” I said with a shrug and realized it was lame as soon as the words left my mouth.

He looked around and looked back at me.

“I mean-it’s-they-I was just looking,” I finished lamely.

He laughed with the sound of the waves. “Don’t worry, I stare at people too.”

“Do you mind if I ask you something?” I asked slowly.

“Sure,” he said, putting down the sandwich he was eating.

“Ash told me that you, um, had or probably still have feelings for your ex,” I said quietly.

“Well, I don’t have feelings for Sarah now. Definitely not. She’s my ex for a reason,” he replied.

“Oh.”

“I can’t believe Ash told you,” he said with a fake pout which made him look super adorable.

I laughed, “You should’ve known that she would tell me.”

He shook his head with a sigh.

“It never really felt natural with Sarah,” he said, resting on his arm.

“Why?” I asked.

He shrugged. “I don’t know. It just didn’t feel real, it was like I was forced into it. That was obviously towards the end of the relationship. Just like the ocean waves, they gather up so much force and try to push through but they always end up going back to the ocean. And when they can’t take it anymore, they come crashing down as a tsunami.”

“Wow,” I breathed. “That was deep.”

He chuckled. “Yeah, I get carried away like that sometimes.”

I smiled. “I guess it wasn’t meant to be.”

He nodded. “I guess.”

“You want to walk?” I asked.

“Sure,” he said getting up and pulling me up with him.

Reaching the shore, I felt cold water run over my feet and felt a few seashells under my feet. Looking up at the sky, I noticed many stars and smiled. I would rarely see stars near my house. They were bright and beautiful like a million mirrors were hanging up in the sky. I saw a star shooting across the sky.

I gasped and grabbed Michael’s arm. “Michael! Look! A shooting star!”

Michael and I stared at the star and saw it pass by in a blur. It was like a little kid drew something on a chalkboard and it got smudged.

“What did you wish for?” I asked with a grin.

He turned to face me. “What do I need to wish for when you’re here?”

A smile took over my face as I blushed to death. His sea green eyes stared at me intensely as I felt his lips come closer to mine. My heart did a somersault and I felt my breathing quicken. I closed my eyes and felt his lips on mine. Not butterflies but I felt an entire zoo erupt in my stomach. I clutched the back of his neck and ran my hand through his silky brunette hair. He held onto my waist, pulling me closer to him.

“I think I’m falling in love with you,” he whispered on my lips, sending shivers throughout my body.

“I’m already in love with you.”
