Chapter 21: Chapter 21

My Best Friend's BrotherWords: 11414

Yawning, I sat down on the bed and stared at my pale reflection in the mirror. A little yelp escaped my throat when I heard my phone's ringtone echo in the silent room.

"It's been long since you called," I stated, answering the call with a smile.

"Yes, sweety, I know. But I've been very busy," mom said with an exasperated sigh.

I nodded. "I know."

"I'm at the airport right now," she said and I could hear the smile in her voice. "I'll be home by tomorrow afternoon."

"I'll be waiting," I replied.

I heard a knock on my door and Ethan popped his head inside the room, his bright eyes scanned the room and then rested on me with a warm smile.

I smiled at him and cupping the phone, I said, "Just give me a minute."

"Cook something for me because I am pretty sure I will be starving by the time I reach home," mom said.

"It's okay, I'll come back later," he said, giving me a small smile.

"No!" I said, a bit too quickly. "I mean, stay, it'll just take a minute."

"Sorry?" mom asked, confused.

"Oh, nothing," I replied as Ethan leaned against the closet, studying my face.

"Alright, sweety. I'll call you back soon, just wanted to tell you that I'm at the airport," mom said.

"Okay, have a safe flight," I said, fiddling with my earring.

"Love you, bye!"

"Bye!" I replied and I knew mom was waiting for a 'love you too.' I was never good at expressing affection to my mom. If I had to choose between drinking rotten milk or saying 'I love you' to my mom; I would choose the disgusting milk. It's just hard for me.

"Love you too," I finally mumbled and disconnected the call.

"You're mom's coming back tomorrow?" Ethan asked, crossing his arms over his chest.

I nodded with a sigh.

"Don't worry, we'll still see each other in school," he said, winking at me.

I rolled my eyes at him. "You really think I'm going to miss you?"

"Of course," he replied confidently.

I scoffed at him and then chuckled.

"Hey, so I wanted to ask you something," he said.

"Go ahead."

"Go on a date with me," he said.

I stared at his pleading face. Wow. He just asked me out!

"That sounds more like an order than a question," I said with a small grin.

"Will you go on a date with me?" he asked again, sitting next to me.

Does he really like me? Oh my god! He's asking me to go out with him! He actually wants to spend an entire evening with me! Okay, I've got to play it cool.

"I'll think about it," I replied, trying to hide the smile that was about to appear on my face. I turned to my suitcase and added in more clothes.

"What? Why?" he whined, making it harder for me to hide my smile.

I shrugged, smiling to my suitcase.

"So you don't want to go out with me?" he asked, leaning over to see me.

"I didn't say that," I replied, not taking my eyes off the suitcase.

"So you do want to go out with me?" he asked and I could see a cute smile on his face from the corner of my eyes.

"I didn't say that either," I said, turning to face him. My face was just inches away from his and I finally let the mischievous smile form on my face.

"That smile tells me something else," he said with a smirk.

"So, what time?" I asked with a grin.

"Just be ready by 7," he said, smiling.

"I will."

"I have some work to do," he said, standing up. "So I will see you at seven?"

I nodded, giving him a smile. After he left the room, I felt like squealing and jumping around but I was positive that he would hear me so I stayed quiet. Quietly, I ran out of my room to go to Erica's but when I grabbed the door knob, I realized that it would be super awkward to talk to her and go crazy over the fact that I was going on a date with her brother.

Sighing, I still entered the room. Erica looked up at me from her novel. Her aquatic blue eyes were covered by her reading glasses.

"What's up?" she asked as I plopped down on her bed.

"I was just packing."

"We should do something tonight," she said, removing her glasses and slipping the bookmark in her book.

"Oh, um," I hesitated before answering.

"Yeah?"

"I'm not free tonight," I said.

"Don't give me the packing excuse again," she said, shooting me a look. "We can pack your stuff now."

"No and it's not an excuse!" I protested.

"Yes, it is," she snapped. "Anyway, why aren't you free tonight?"

"Well, um, I'm going out with Ethan tonight," I said softly, not meeting her eyes.

"Going out? As in a date?" Her eyebrows shot up as she sat up straight.

"Yes," I said quietly.

"But you said you had no intentions of becoming my sister-in-law!" she exclaimed.

I rolled my eyes. "Stop exaggerating!"

Her shoulders fell. "Fine."

"Okay, I shouldn't have agreed to go with him. This is just plain weird. I'll just go tell him I can't go," I decided.

"No!" she said. "Don't do that. It's obvious that you guys like each other. Don't say no to him just because of me."

"But you're clearly not psyched about it," I mumbled.

"Ash, I'll get used to it," she said with a shrug. "Besides, if it's meant to me then who am I to interfere?"

"Since when did you become so understanding?" I joked with a grin.

"Pfft, both of us know that I was born with a great understanding."

I faked a cough as she hit my arm.

"Let's go shopping!" I exclaimed. "I want to buy a new dress."

Her shoulders sank and she gave me a bored look. "No."

"Why?" I whined.

"Because I don't like shopping," she said, opening her novel again.

"But-"

"No."

"Please-"

"No."

I pouted, peering at her through my lashes.

"Not going to work on me," she stated. "Call Abby."

"Okay!" I said, unlocking my phone.

"Hello?" Abby asked as she answered.

"Hey!" I replied.

"Sup?"

"I want to go shopping. Join me?" I insisted.

"Now?" she asked.

"Yes."

"Er, bad timing," she said. "I'm out with Michael right now."

Ever since their date, it was impossible to be alone with Abby. They were like magnets. He even dropped her all the way to her class and then went for his. Yes, I adored them a lot. But at times, it got on my nerves too.

"Seriously? Are you with him all the time?" I asked.

"Pretty much," she said.

I groaned. "Fine, have fun. Bye."

"Are you mad at me?" she asked.

I sighed. "No. Now go, don't waste your precious."

"Love you, Ash! Bye!" she exclaimed.

"Love you, too, Abby."

I jutted out my bottom lip as I stared at Erica. She laughed out loud and said, "Who are you going to ask next? Jared?"

"No," I replied with a frown. "Ethan."

She laughed again. "Good luck with that, he hates shopping more than me."

"We'll see," I said, leaving the room.

Knocking on Ethan's door once, I entered his room. He stopped playing his guitar when I entered.

"Please don't say no," I pleaded, walking towards him. His eyebrows shot up. "Can we go shopping now?"

"Uh-"

"Please," I begged. "I promise it won't be boring!"

After a moment's thinking, he agreed. Squealing, I hugged him as he laughed.

"How's this dress?" I asked, walking over to Ethan with a bright yellow dress and silver studs. He looked up from his phone. Frowning, he shook his head.

I lifted my hand up in defeat. "You didn't like any of the dresses I showed you!"

"This shop is lame, let's go somewhere else," he said, walking out. Groaning, I placed the dress back in the stand and followed him.

"You're very picky," I said, frowning at him.

"I'm not," he defended himself. "You're not patient."

"What? That's not true!" I argued.

"You just want to grab the very first dress you see," he argued back.

"But they looked good!" I said.

He chuckled. "Then why didn't you get them?"

I opened my mouth to answer but realized that I didn't have an answer. His question was good. Why didn't I get those dresses? Just because Ethan didn't like them.

"Because I didn't like them," he answered himself with a smile. "You really do care about my opinion."

"No-I-but-"

He laughed loudly. He halted in his tracks and pointed at the men's room. My eyebrows furrowed. "You want to go to the washroom?"

He shook his head with a frown. "I dare you to walk into the washroom and use a pick-up line on any guy in there."

"No!" I refused, laughing.

"Are you scared?" he asked with a troublesome smile.

"Pfft, no," I replied, rolling my eyes.

"Then do it," he said, shrugging.

"There's no way I am entering the men's room!" I exclaimed, causing a few people who were passing by to look at me.

"You said you're not scared, then do it," he said.

I stared at him for a moment. "Fine!" I decided, handing him my handbag.

Chuckling, he said, "Is there a good reason for me to hold your handbag?"

"Actually, no," I said. "But hold it."

"Yes, ma'am," he said, saluting my with two of his fingers.

Okay, just enter and walk to the first guy you see. Do not even peek at the urinals. I instructed myself.

Ethan entered the washroom and a few guys gave him a weird look because of the girly handbag he was carrying. Almost every guys gasped when I entered. I saw a guy washing his hands and squeezing my eyes shut I walked towards him. I couldn't think of an great pick-up line so I just used one of the most common ones I had heard.

"Can you please touch me?" I asked the redhead who was very nervous. When he gave me a nervous look, I said, "So that I can tell my friend over there that I have been touched my an angel."

As soon I said that, I turned and ran out of the washroom which wasn't easy because of my high heels. Ethan came outside howling with laughter. I laughed with him as we stumbled towards a shop with dresses.

"I can't believe I actually did that," I said between my giggles.

"Neither can I," he agreed, staring at me.

After our laughter had drowned, we continued the dress hunting which was basically Ethan disliking every single dress I showed him. I found a very hot yet beautiful dress. It was black with red roses imprinted all over it. I took it to Ethan.

"I dare you to try this dress on," I said, standing in front of him with my hands on my hips.

"No way, that's not even my size," he said.

"That's not my problem," I replied with a smirk. "Try it on!"

"Ash, no," he said with a serious look.

I pushed him in the changing room along with the dress.

"It's a dare!" I exclaimed.

"Fine," he said, shutting the door at my face.

I dug my phone out of my bag and stood in front of the changing room with the camera at the ready. After waiting for what seemed like hours, he slowly opened the door. The first thing I did was snap a picture and then I laughed a lot. The dress with his converse looked extremely funny. He grabbed me by my arm and pulled me in, shutting the door. I continued laughing as he rolled his eyes and then joined in too.

"You know." I took a breath between my laughter. "This dress is actually quite hot. I'll buy this."

"Now what?" he asked. "You won't even compliment me?"

I continued laughing.

"You look very cute," I said, kissing his cheek. I felt myself blush but my face was already red with the amount of laughing so I wasn't conscious.

"Of course, I do," he said, posing in front of the mirror.

"Please change," I said. "I can't see you in that dress any longer."

After Ethan managed to get out of the dress, I bought the dress. It would, obviously, look much better on me.

"Wear that dress tonight," Ethan said as we walked out of the shop.

"I will," I said with a smile.
