Chapter 4: Chapter 4

My Best Friend's BrotherWords: 9839

I woke up and wanted sleep again but I forced myself to get off the bed.

After bathing, I was digging through my closet in my towel, I found a black mini skirt and a black leather jacket with boots; I just needed something to wear inside the jacket. After digging through some unpacked boxes, I found a loose white top and  put it on.

Letting my hair down naturally, I went downstairs and made myself a bowl of cereal. Mom was probably resting or dressing up; I went to her room and saw her dressed in a high-waist skirt with a lavender shirt tucked in.

She smiled and asked, "Something special today?"

"No," I replied with confusion.

"Well." She cleared her throat. "You dressed up."

I looked down at myself and smiled, "Yeah, I wanted to."

She smiled back and we both left the house.

I was putting my English and Math books in my bag when I got hugged by someone roughly from the back. I let a squeak escape my throat and looked behind. Abby.

"Abby! You scared me," I stated rolling my eyes.

She grinned.

I had barely known this girl for 3 days and yet we were close and friendly. I smiled at her and hugged her.

"You know that you still haven't introduced me to Michael," I said with a smile.

Her cheeks turned soft pink and my smile grew bigger. "Um, I don't really need to introduce him. He already knows you, I guess."

"No, he doesn't," I replied firmly.

She stuck her tongue out at me and we started walking. Erica was walking towards us with a smile on her face. She stopped to hug us and then started walking to her locker while Abby and I followed her. Abby was talking to me about Michael.

I lost track of what she was saying as soon as I saw Ethan leaning against his locker and talking to a boy. Wait, I know that boy, what was his name? Um, Jared!

Ethan was wearing a black T-shirt which rested on his body perfectly. I kept nodding to Abby without listening to a single word she was saying. Ethan looked around and then he saw me and I looked away. My eyes, which were not in my control, looked back to where he was standing. He was still looking at me. Damn. He smiled at me and I thought it would be rude to just stare at him so I smiled back. Actually, I would have smiled without even wanting to. Wait, what?

He still held my gaze and I looked away. Abby was still talking and I tried to catch on with the conversation and give a few responses. I took a quick peek at Ethan and he was still looking at me. His lips were shaped into a perfect big smile.

"Ashley, could you please listen to me?" Abby asked, making me look at her. "Instead of staring at Ethan."

"I wasn't staring at him," I replied quickly.

"Right," she replied with a smirk.

"What are you guys talking about?" Erica asked.

"Nothing," I replied casually.

"Well, I was talking but Ashley wouldn't listen," Abby said, crossing her arms over her chest.

"I was just thinking about something," I defended myself.

"Right," Abby replied sarcastically.

The bell rang loudly, making me sigh. Abby had English with me; we walked to the English room together.

"Ash, you can sit beside me but the seat is taken. There are two empty seats. Both of them are at the back," Abby said as soon as we reached her chair.

"Oh it's alright. I'm fine with sitting at the back," I replied truthfully.

She exhaled the breath she was holding.

"Oh good. I thought you would start whining."

I smiled at her. "So which seats are free?"

"Ok, there's this one with a total geek who is practically sick all the time. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate her or something," she paused. "And the other one is with Ethan, since you know him its better if you sit next to him. I don't want you to fall sick because of that girl."

I smiled at her but I really didn't want to sit with Ethan for another class. Sighing, I gave Abby one last smile and walked towards where Ethan would be sitting next to me soon. I placed my bag under the table and crossed my hands over the table, resting my head on it.

After quite a while, Ethan walked in from the door, his eyes landed on me and the side of his mouthed twitched up. I held his gaze, feeling his eyes getting closer to me and then he sat next to me.

"You just can't resist me, can you?" he asked and I looked back at him. His eyebrows were raised with a grin which showed all his perfectly shaped teeth.

"Maybe I should ask you the same question," I replied, hinting no emotion.

His grin grew wider. "You're different, seriously."

I scowled at him. "You need a different pick up line."

A soft laugh escaped his throat and he was about to say something but was cut off by a man, who I assumed was our English teacher. He quickly introduced himself to me as Mr. James and started with the class.

English has always been a boring lesson for me and Mr. James always wanted to explain everything in detail. Groaning, I placed my chin on the desk.

"Bored?" Ethan asked.

I rolled my eyes and replied, "No. Not at all, I am enjoying this so much."

This time, he rolled his eyes. "Whatever, I thought maybe we could just talk because clearly I am much more interesting than Mr. James."

I had to agree, he was much more interesting than Mr. James but before I could reply, he pulled out his phone, typed something and then scowled at it.

He was using his phone during the class which was not exactly allowed. Is he crazy? Oh! I know the answer for that. Yes.

"What are you doing? Are you crazy?" I whispered, looking up at the teacher to make sure he didn't notice.

He looked up at me and my eyes were drawn to his. His golden brown eyes were completely mesmerizing.

"No, why?" he asked.

"You're using your phone during class and you ask me why I think you are mad?" I said with obviousness.

"I think it's broken," he said with frustration.

"Why? What happened?" I seriously didn't care whether his phone was broken or sucked up by a toilet bowl but I just asked to remain polite.

"It doesn't have your number in it," he replied, trying to hide the small smile which was playing on his lips.

That was sweet. That was actually a good one. He kept looking at me waiting for me to reply but I wasn't going to give him my number.

He cleared his throat. "Umm Ash?"

I felt a smile crawl up to my face but I tried to hide it, this was my chance to annoy him.

"Umm what?"

He dropped his shoulders in frustration. "C'mon! Aren't you going to give me your number?"

"Nope," I replied and looked in front, my hair fell on my shoulder and I took this opportunity to smile.

"What? Why?" he whined softly.

"Why do you want my number?" I asked.

"Well, I thought we were becoming friends. So, friends stay in touch right?" he tried to reason with me.

"You can talk to me in school." I replied, enjoying myself.

"You know that the world won't get destroyed if you give me your number right?" he tried again.

"You know that the world won't get destroyed if you don't get my number right?" I retorted.

While I was writing down the important notes, the bell rang. Quickly, I scribbled down the important parts.

"You are a stubborn person," he stated.

He got up to leave.

"Hey Ethan?" I called out.

He stopped and turned to look at me. I smiled and walked towards him with a pen in my hand. I lifted his hand, positioning it in front of me and writing down my number on the palm of his hand. We both lifted our gazes from his hand and looked at each other. For the first time I gave him a real smile and he smiled back at me. I let go of his hand and gave him one last smile and walked away from him.

I heard someone running behind me and spin me around. I gasped and relaxed when it was just Abby.

"What just happened back there?" she asked.

"Um, what are you talking about?" I asked with genuine curiosity.

"You had this weird, affectionate moment back there with Ethan," she said with amusement.

My eyes widened a bit but I just gave him my number. "That was nothing; I just gave him my number."

"Interesting," she said slowly.

I just rolled my eyes and continued walking; Abby dropped me at the Maths room and went to her subject. Maths was alright, I never had much trouble in maths.

The entire day turned out to be quite good. Erica, Abby and I went to a mall to just hang out for some time and then after coming home, I revised a bit for English and continued unpacking.

Clarity was on repeat and I kept humming along. Walking towards another box, I heard my phone buzz.

I sighed and went to pick it up, an unknown number flashed on my screen. I accepted the call with a frown.

"Hello?" I said in a small voice.

"Hey," a familiar boyish voice replied from the other side.

"Urgh! Ethan?" I asked with annoyance.

"Wow, you definitely missed me Ash," he stated.

"Look Ethan. I have a lot of things to unpack. So stop bothering me and I didn't give you my number so you could call me and annoy me any time you wanted to," I stated everything clearly in one breath.

"Oh, um, I'm sorry. I just called because I was bored, talk to you later," he said softy.

I felt bad now; he was just trying to be nice. "No! I mean, um, it's alright. I guess I can spare a few minutes."

"Hey, it's alright. You can finish unpacking. In fact, I'm free I can come and help you," he responded.

I didn't want Ethan coming over and helping me unpack my boxes in which he would find things he isn't supposed to look at.

"No, no. I'm fine. Either ways I have nothing to do. I'll just finish with my setting up my room," I said.

"Um, okay. Sure, then I'll see you tomorrow."

"Yeah sure," I replied, sitting on my bed.

"Bye Ash," he said.

"Bye Ethan."
