Chapter 6
Carolâs POV
I look at Aiden with shock. Iâve never heard him raise his voice before, not even in any of the videos of him that I looked through.
Zack freezes in place. His face looks paler than normal as he slowly turns around. âYes?â He says. I almost laugh at how meek
he sounds.
âDonât misunderstand.â Aidenâs voice is as cool as ice. âCarol is charming, yes, but that isnât why she beat you. Her work was simply more meticulous than yours.â He narrows his eyes. âMaybe you should take some time to reflect on that.â
Zack opens his mouth to speak, but nothing comes out. Clearly out of his element, he rushes out the door.
The immense satisfaction I feel at watching Zack run away for once is quickly stifled when I remember my situation. Nervously. I glance toward Aiden. Heâs looking at me once again. There isnât a trace of his earlier coldness in his eyes. I cough awkwardly into my hand. âThank you,â I say. âYou didnât have to do that.â
âIt was the right thing to do,â Aiden says softly. I gather up my binder, mostly to hide the blush forming on my face.
âWhat I said about the quality of your work, I meant it.â Aiden smiles gently. âI promise you didnât just win because Iâ¦â He trails off meaningfully. Know you
Itâs a miracle that we make it out of the room without the conversation moving into more awkward territory. We exchange. pleasantries and prepare to view the properties.
It should come as no surprise to me when the car that comes to pick us up is a luxury vehicle. The personal driver opens the passenger door for Aiden, but he decides instead to sit in the back of the car with me. The distance between us is palpable.
The driver has only just pulled away from the office when Aiden turns to me with a serious expression.
âCarol,â he begins, âthereâs something I want to tell you.â
This is exactly what I was afraid of. âRight,â I say quickly, âletâs decide which house weâre visiting first!â
I look away pointedly to shuffle through my papers. Luckily for me, he goes along with the conversation and doesnât bring it up again.
I canât deal with this right now, I think. Itâs all too much, For now, Iâm just thankful I didnât lose my job.
The first place we visit is my favorite of the houses. The property is a smaller villa tucked away in the mountains. Itâs even better than I could have imagined once we arrive.
The villa stands tall in front of us. The decorations are much more traditional than many of the other selections. The house is built primarily out of wood and the decorations are warm and comforting. The backyard is an openâair swimming pool that has a view of an expansive forest. Weâre standing on the back porch and enjoying the view when Aiden begins to speak.
âI love it,â he says. His expression is filled with as much awe as I feel. âThe forest provides so much privacy. This place is really special.â
He looks at me with that same singular intensity again. I feel my face flush. I have to remind myself heâs talking about the house, not me.
âIâm glad to hear it,â I say. âThis was my favorite of the options.â
Aiden chuckles. âYou know,â he said, âmost real estate agents start with the worst options to make their later choices look
better.â
âI hate dirty tactics like that,â I declare. âI only offer my most sincere recommendations. This job is about finding the perfect place for someone, not trickeryâ

I stop myself, realizing I got carried away talking about my job again. Aiden is looking at me with a depth in his eyes I canât quite decipher. I clear my throat.
âSorry,â I murmur. âI guess thatâs the second time Iâve gotten carried awayâ
Aidenâs laugh is warm. âDonât ever apologize for that.â He takes a few steps closer to me until I can feel the heat of his body. âI admire that about you.â
For a moment, we linger like that. I canât bring myself to pull away. The seconds feel like hours when he looks at me like that. I canât help but wonder how intensely Iâm looking back at him.
I miss Aidenâs warmth as soon as he steps back. He takes one more look at the view before looking back at me.
âSold.â
I assume I must have misunderstood him. âIâm sorry?â
âSold,â he repeats with a grin. âThis is the house I want. This is the home I want.â My heart jumps,
âWell,â I begin, trying to suppress my excitement, âwe should probably discuss the price, thenâ¦â
âNo need,â Aiden waves a hand. âI accept the price as the owner listed it.â
I smile brightly. âPerfect!â I exclaim. I jot down a few notes on my clipboard. âThis is excellent. Iâll prepare and Iâll notify the owner! Donât worry, I work fast. Iâll make sure youâre able to sign as soon as possible.â
Aiden shakes his head fondly. âYou know, you might just be the most honest real estate agent in this city.â
âI donât know about that,â I laugh. The joy of successfully securing a contract- and the perfect home for Aiden â makes me giddy.
âI have a question that I hope youâll answer honestly,â Aiden says. My heart squeezes when I realize where heâs going with this.
I know I canât avoid this conversation forever. In all honesty, Iâm not even sure if I want to. My life has changed so much in the past two days Iâm worried I donât even know myself.
âWhat is it?â I reply.
Aiden seems to sense my hesitance, but he presses onward. âHave you seen the news?â He asks softly,
I canât lie to Aiden. I avoid eye contact for a long moment as I try to collect myself.
âYes.â
Aiden lets out a heavy breath. He runs a hand through his hair and closes his eyes. By the look of it, he probably already assumed as much.
âWhy didnât you call me?â He asks finally. I clutch my clipboard against my chest, but I donât avoid his eyes this time. Slowly, I find the words Iâve been searching for since last night.
Iâve always wanted a stable relationship, I confess, I squeeze my eyes shut. âMy parents have the kind of love that Iâve always wanted, but Iâve never been able to achieve it myself. Iâve always felt like something was missing.â I slowly open my eyes again, my expression stiff.
âI want a relationship that can make me feel the stability Iâve never truly had. And⦠I donât think thatâs something I can have with someone like you.â
Aiden chuckles, a bewildered look on his face. âWhat kind of person do you think I am?â He asks.
âI looked you up.â I admit. âYouâve been linked with countless celebrities. I couldnât live through thatâ
Aiden shakes his head. âI can assure you that those are false.â
I purse my lips. âWell, either way, thereâs another pretty obvious problem, isnât there?â I point out. âYouâre a werewolf. You

have a fated mate. I wonât just be someone to pass the time with until you meet them.â Not again.
Aiden stares at me for a long moment. I think maybe Iâve finally convinced him until he speaks again.
âCarol,â he says softly, âhave you considered that you are my fated mate?â
