napter 9
Carolâs POV
Daniel lets out a longâsuffering sigh and pinched the bridge of his nose. âEnough with the dramatics,â he says. âIâm not h for workplace drama. Iâm here because you told me you had concerns about Carolâs business practices.â
âIt isnât just workplace drama!â Zack insists. âCarol cheated at our competition just to ruin my life. She used dirty method secure a client for the contract!â
My face grows hot with anger. âExcuse me? Iâm going to need you to be more specific. What exactly are you accusing me Dirty tactics? My mind canât help but wander to the fact Aiden and I have slept together.
I remind myself that it was a completely unrelated situation it wasnât like I planned things that way. In fact, Aiden is the whoâs been trying to pursue me! I donât bother to say that out loud thereâs no way anyone would believe that. A celebrit pursuing a nobody? It sounded ridiculous.
â
Zack gives me a smug look before turning back to Daniel. âCarol here decided that the best way to win over her new client to attempt to seduce him.â He points an accusatory finger at me.
Aiden looks like heâs about to speak up, but Iâm too angry to let this accusation slide. âHow dare you!â I exclaim. âThis is completely unwarranted.â I had no idea that he was going to be my client! I even tried to have myself removed from his ca but no one would let me!
âOh yeah?â Zack crosses his arms with a smug grin. âDaniel and I were listening outside the door. Care to explain what all t talk of fated mates is about? What about you two âspending the night together?â
I feel my face flush again, this time with embarrassment. Oh god. They overheard that? The situation feels much too comp to describe. Besides, it feels wrong for me to be the one defending myself. Iâm not exactly an unbiased party.
Luckily for me, Aiden takes his change to step in. âItâs true that I met Carol prior to our meeting yesterday,â he admits readi âand itâs true that she is my fated mate. But I can promise you she didnât attempt anything inappropriate to win me over.â
Danielâs eyebrows raise at Aidenâs confession. On one hand, Iâm thankful Aiden is so honest. On the other, itâs very possible that his admittance was the nail in the coffin.
Zack laughs loudly. âImpossible! No human could possibly be a werewolfâs fated mate. Itâs obviously a dirty tactic Carol used to try and win!â
I can feel Aiden grow angrier beside me probably even angrier than I feel. âShe is,â he insists, his voice low, âI can smell it her. Are you doubting a werewolfâs ability to sense their mate?â
âOf course not,â Zack assures quickly, âbut thatâs not the only reason why she might have smelled different to you.â He grins. widely and turns back to me.
âIâm curious, Carol â have you heard that there are drugs manufactured just for the purpose of faking the scent of a fated mate to a weakâwilled werewolf?â
I feel my heart drop. I want to defend myself, but Iâm not even sure where to begin. Accusing me of sleeping with a client is already bad enough. Having Zack of all people suggest Iâm lying about being someoneâs fated mate is just too ironic to bear.
Honestly, I had never heard of such a drug before. I donât know enough about werewolf culture to lie about anything. Still, itâs not like my denial is going to be enough evidence.
Aiden scoffs.â âWeakâwilledâ? Can an Omega like you really accuse an Alpha of being âweak??â
I suppress a snicker. Even while Iâm in distress, watching Aiden systematically destroy Zackâs floundering is satisfying. Zackâs face turns bright red with anger
âJust because youâre an Alpha doesnât mean youâre more perceptive than me!â He retorts. Aiden raises an eyebrow.
âEven if youâre just as perceptive as I am, thereâs an issue with your logic. If Carolâs scent comes from a drug and not our mate

bond, you should be able to smell it, tooDo you smell a scent from her now?â
Zack splutters for a moment. I can almost see the gears turning in his head. Itâs satisfying to watch Aiden knock him down a peg with so much ease. I glance sidelong at him. Aiden makes me feel so supported. Safe, I realize.
âWell, I couldnât distinguish the scents during our meeting! There was an Alpha in the room!â Zack insists weakly. âLook thereâs an easy solution. I bought an antidote to the scentâproducing drugs last night. Using this, we can figure out the truth fair and square!â
Daniel is clearly getting fed up with this backâandâforth. âAnd how do you propose we do that?â He said.
âEasyâ Zack declared. He stretches out a bottle of pills in my direction with a smirk. âI challenge you to take one â if you
dare.â
I stare at Zack in disbelief. Heâs that convinced Iâm lying about this? The entire situation feels so deeply ironic. I canât decide if I want to laugh or cry. Aiden shakes his head at Zack.
âThereâs no need for her to ââ
âIâll do it,â I declare. The three men turn to stare at me.
âCarol, you really donât have to,â Aiden reassures me softly. âI trust you.â Hearing him say those words makes my heart do something funny, but all I do is smile.
âZack wants to prove Iâm cheating. I want to prove heâs crazy,â I say simply. Zack starts to argue again, but I snatch the bottle of pills out of his hand and pop one into my mouth
A second passes, then another. The entire roomâs attention is focused on me. After about a minute of painful silence, Zack turns to Aiden expectantly.
âSoâ¦?â He demands. Aiden rolls his eyes, but deeply inhales through his nose. His eyes close and a small smile plays across his lips.
âThere it is. Thatâs my mate,â he says softly. He speaks with such certainty that my knees feel weak. Aiden opens his eyes and turns his gaze back to Zack, whose jaw has already dropped.
âHow did you hear about such a drug in the first place?â He asks. Zack still looks too shocked to properly function.
â
âI well. Sophia told me,â he manages awkwardly. Heâs clearly starting to sweat under the glares from both Aiden and Daniel. Aiden raises an eyebrow.
âOh? And why didnât she come here with you herself? Clearly, sheâs very knowledgeable about the drug.â He says. Zackâs brow furrows with confusion.
âShe did come,â he says, âbut she said she needed to go to the restroom right before the meeting. Why does it matter?â
A realization dawns on me just as a smirk tugs at Aidenâs lips. My heart jumps. It should be illegal how good he looks with that expression on his face.
âI think maybe you should be the one worried about being deceived,â Aiden says with a casual shrug. Zackâs face goes pale.
