Chapter 1087
Marcus felt a heavy weight on his heart. âThatâs just life, innit? No one can stick with us forever, we meet different people at every stage of lifeâ
7 donât give a damn what others doâ Comelia replied, âYou told me weâd grow old together, so you gotta stick with me, canât abandon me. If you do, Iâll hate you forever, and never forgive youâ
Yeah, Marcus had made such a promise. But back then, he had no clue about his health condition. Now, he knew his health was going downhill, and he wasnât sure how long he could be with her. So, he dared not make any promises to Cornelia anymore.
Marcus tried to change the subject, âComelia, Iâm parched, can I get a drink of water?â
Comelia immediately let go of him, âGet yourself hydrated and grab a bite. Youâve been fighting the fire for hours, must be dead on your feet. I reckon I should postpone this momingâs meeting, you should head back and rest.â
Marcus replied, âNo need, I can hang on.â
Comelia insisted, âNothingâs more important than your health. Iâll sort it out, you have to go home and get some shut eye.â
Faced with Corneliaâs firm stand, Marcus had to comply, âAlright then.â
Comelia looked up at the ruins, the spot where Skyler had been, the origin of the fire, also the most devastated area, âIs Skylerâ¦?â
Marcus answered, âBurnt to a crisp, not even bones left. We canât tell which are her ashes and which are the woods.â
Comelia felt a pang in her heart, âHow did the fire start? Did Skyler have to be turned to ashes to finally escape from Zavier?â
Tears fell from her eyes, âIâve been orphaned since childhood, cursed by neighbors for bringing bad luck, later framed and couldnât return home. So I always thought I was the most miserable person in the world. But compared to Skyler, at least Iâve got Granny Rebecca who loves me, Abby and Zack who stay by my side, and now you. But Skyler, sheâs always been alone, doesnât even have a friend to confide in. She wanted to escape Zavier, but people around her always advised her to bear with it, never to divorce. Nobody knew Skylerâs inner pain, so she couldnât escape the man she feared the most and had to resort to such an extreme way to end her life.â
Marcus also looked at the spot, âDonât beat yourself up. It might be a relief for her to choose this way.â
After the fire, Marcus and firefighters went to Skylerâs location. Generally, a fire wouldnât burn a person to nothing but ashes, but Skyler was just that, reduced to a pile of ashes that might not even be hers.
Cornelia felt guilty, âI could have saved Skyler. If I had insisted a bit longer last night, maybe I could have stopped her suicide.â
Marcus cut her off, âCornelia, you gotta understand, Skylerâs an adult. Dhe knew what she was doing, and she had to take responsibility for her actions. Youâre her friend, itâs great if you can help her. But if you couldnât save her, donât blame yourself, got it?â
Cornelia got his point, but just couldnât stop feeling bad.
Marcus gently patted her head, then said. âThe Rivera and Blue families should be here soon, let them handle the situation here, we should head back.â
âAlright.â Cornelia looked at Skylerâs spot, bowed deeply, âSkyler, like you said in the letter, if thereâs a next life, weâll meet again in springâ
Marcus said, âIf you wish, youâll meet again.â
Cornelia replied, âYes, we surely will.â
Just then, Ayden came over to report, âPresident Hartley, Zavierâs awakeâ
Marcus asked, âIs he still out of control?â
Ayden replied, âHeâs been lying there quietly since he woke up, hasnât done anything. But his hairâs turned all gray in just a few hours.â
Marcus took Corneliaâs hand and said, âLetâs go see him.â
