Chapter 1178
âSee you tomorrow!â Cornelia said, hanging up the phone reluctantly. Then she heard Marcusâ soothing voice, âYou hang up first.
âNo, you hang up first.â Cornelia responded.
Marcus went silent for a few seconds before finally hanging up.
It had only been two days, but for some reason, Cornelia felt like it had been ages since she had last seen Marcus.
So, when she heard he was coming back tomorrow, she was absolutely thrilled, her appetite suddenly returning for lunch.
Grandpa Augustine was delighted to see her in such high spirits, âWhat did that lad Marcus say to you? Youâve been grinning from ear to ear ever since you got off the phone with him.â
âHeâs coming back tomorrow.â Cornelia replied.
âSo soon?â Grandpa Augustine asked.
âYeah, it feels like heâs been gone forever.â Cornelia said.
Grandpa Augustine lightly tapped her forehead, âOh, you silly girl, canât you play it cool for once? Men wonât value what they can easily have.â
âMarc is my husband, not just any guy. I want him to know how much I like him, how much I miss himâ Cornelia insisted, believing that a couple should be bold in expressing their love for each other.
âAs long as youâre happy Grandpa Augustine conceded, âBut what exactly was Marcus doing in France that he needed to return so soon?â
There was an explosion at our French branch. Many employees were injured or killed. Both of us went there to handle the aftermath and were so busy we didnât even make it home for New Yearâs. Weâre coming back once everythingâs settled, but some people are unhappy with the compensation and causing troubleâ Cornelia explained.
âDoes Marcus really need to personally deal with such trivial matters?â Grandpa Augustine asked,
âThe compensation might be trivial, but losing a child is not. Youâve known Marcus for a long time, you know how he is. Cross him, and youâre in for a world of hurt, but he treats those who help him with the utmost sincerity. Cornelia answered.
Grandpa Augustine nodded in agreement, âThat lad Marcus, heâs flawless both in looks and in talent.â
Cornelia, busy chewing on a corn pancake and unable to speak, nodded vigorously. After quickly swallowing her food, she said. âYouâre spot on, Grandpa Augustine. Iâve never met a man more handsome than Marcus.â
Grandpa Augustine chuckled at her comment, Thatâs love making you blind. Heâs your husband, of course you think heâs the most handsome.â
âSo, I canât state the obvious?â Cornelia retorted.
Grandpa Augustine laughed heartily, âOf course, you can.â
âHeâs the best man in the world.â Cornelia declared.
âWeâll see.â Grandpa Augustine replied, âI watched Marcus grow up. He had a tough childhood, which made him quite reserved. Heâs a good businessman, but I worry he might not make a good husband. I fear he might not treat you well.â
âHe wonât do that.â Cornelia assured him.
âIf he treats you well, thatâs great. If he doesnât, as your grandfather, Iâll make sure he answers for it. Nelly, remember youâre my granddaughter No one can bully youâ Grandpa Augustine said.
Marcus had told her similar things before. They were the ones closest to her.
âI know.â Cornelia said.
âLetâs eat.â Grandpa Augustine said softly, patting Corneliaâs head.
After lunch, Cornelia spent the afternoon playing chess with Grandpa Augustine. Most young people might not have the patience for it, but Cornelia didnât mind at all. She enjoyed spending time with Grandpa Augustine. The two of them spent the day together, both of them thoroughly enjoying themselves.
