Chapter 1497
Hannah didnât want to dwell on this topic anymore. âJust let me be once weâre out of here, okay?â
Jarvis asked, âHannah, are you worried about something?â
Hannah replied, âI ainât worried about nada. I can walk just fine, why the heck should you be carrying me all the time?â
Jarvis said, âIf I let you go now, Steven might think he still stands a chance. Letâs keep up with this charade to crush his hopes once and for all.â
Hannah took a moment, âAlright.â
Jarvis asked, âSo, which way do we go? Be my GPS.â
Hannah instructed, âOnce weâre out of here, turn right. Thereâs a little path that leads to the river. My dad loves fishing there in his spare time. Even if he doesnât catch a single fish, heâs happy to just sit there all day.âe2
Jarvis commented, âYour dadâs quite the patient bloke. Patience usually pays off.â
Hannah said, âWell, my dad isnât really ambitious, he usually goes with my momâs flow in most matters. Heâs always been a good guy. But he got into a spat with the villagers yesterday because of me.â
Jarvis inquired, âWhat was that all about?â
Hannah chuckled, âBecause someone said I was playing mistress to some guy. My dad was livid, and nearly got into a fistfight.â
Yesterday, the ruckus in the yard had woken Hannah up. She intended to go down and deal with these folks, but then Steven showed up. He handled those villagers quite effortlessly, so she just laid in bed, pretending nothing was happening.
Jarvis said, âThose folks slandered you like that, no wonder your dad was pissed.â
Hannah said, âI wouldnât exactly call it slander. There was indeed a transactional element in my relationship with Steven, and I canât say Iâm totally innocent. But! had never seen, my dad argue with anyone before. I thought he was incapable of it.â
Jarvis said, âDonât sell yourself short. When you were with Steven, he was neither married nor taken, so your relationship was legally protected. You shouldnât belittle yourself; you mean the world to your dad.â
Hannah said, âIâve always known my dad loves me very much.â
Jarvis said, âLifeâs too short to give a damn about what others think. All that matters is that youâre happy and comfortable.â
Hannah said with a laugh, âI used to care a lot about what others thought of me. But then I realized that as long as Iâm happy, thatâs all that matters. I donât give a ratâs ass about anyone elseâs opinion. Just like what Cornelia âalways used to tell me, we canât please everyone.ââ
Jarvis said, âDonât mention her in front of me.â
Hannah asked, âAre you still pining for her?â
Jarvis replied, âIâve loved her for so many years. How can I just forget about her?â
Hannah said, âI get it. It takes a moment to fall for someone, but a lifetime to forget them.â
Jarvis said, âThatâs why we, two peas in a pod, should stick together.â
Before they knew it, theyâd reached the riverside. At a small dock by the river, Jarvis put Hannah down and spread his coat over a rock. âSit on my coat. You donât
wanna catch a cold.â
Hannah asked, âIs that okay?â
Jarvis replied, âItâs just a coat, no biggie.â
After a thought, Hannah sat down. She looked up at Jarvis and said earnestly, âI might not have the capacity to love anymore.â
Jarvis said, âDonât be so pessimistic.â
Hannah replied, âIâm not being pessimistic. Do you have any idea how desperate the car accident left me?â
Jarvis said, âIâm sorry.â
Hannah asked, âWhy are you apologizing to me? If it werenât for you, Iâd probably be dead by now!
Jarvis didnât respond.
Hannah continued, âDo you know what I was thinking when I was lying in that pool of blood?â
Jarvis asked, âWhat were you thinking?â
Hannah replied, âI was thinking, if I hadnât met Steven, would have been spared the pain? I was also thinking, if I hadnât met Steven, I might have been married to some ordinary guy and had a few kids by now!â
