Chapter 1630
âGirls like her are a dime a dozen. Am I supposed to take every single one under my wing?â Zavierâs voice trailed off as his gaze suddenly shot through the room, locking eyes with Skyler. âWhy are you eavesdropping out there?ââ
Skyler hadnât meant to overhear their conversation; she just happened to catch it and hadnât yet managed to slip away before Zavier spotted her. She walked up to Zavier and stood firmly in front of him. âI didnât mean to listen in on your conversation.â
Zavier didnât care whether it was intentional or not. Seeing her just reminded him of the strings pulling at his life, irritating him to no end. âYou have two choices. One, have Marissa rent an apartment for you. Two, if you donât like option one, pack your bags and get out on your own.â
Marissa was beside herself with worry. âMr. Zavierâ¦â
Skyler cut in, âI choose option three.â
Zavierâs eyebrows arched menacingly. âI didnât give you a third option.â
Skyler continued, âI know you donât want me around, but we donât have much of a choice right now.âe2
âAre you
threatening me?â Zavierâs voice turned icy.
âNot at all. School starts soon, and Iâll move into the dorms. But we have to keep this from the elders back home.â
Marissa interjected, âMiss Skyler, please reconsider.â
Zavier scoffed, âYou donât like me, but you canât let go of the title of my wife.â
Skyler wanted to roll her eyes. Who in the world would want that title? She had come to terms with reality. âRight now, if we clash with the family, we will have no chance of winning. Think about it. Iâll stay here for two nights, and first thing after tomorrow, Iâll pack up and move to the school. I wonât be any trouble to you.â
With that, Skyler headed upstairs.
âSkyler, stop right there!â Zavier called after her.
She turned around. âAnything else, Mr. Zavier?â
Faced with her big doe-like eyes, the harsh words died on Zavierâs lips. âJust⦠two more days. If youâre not out by then, Iâll personally see to it.â
Thank you!â
Zavier stood silently, stupefied. The girl who seemed like a vulnerable bunny last night had turned into a feisty one.
From the sidelines, Marissa sighed, âMr. Zavier, sheâs still a young lady. Youâre a grown man. Canât you be a bit gentler with her?â
Zavier ignored Marissa and strode out.
Marissa watched his retreating figure, then looked back toward the staircase, her heart heavy for Skylerâs uncertain future.
Back in her room, Skyler slipped into a simple white sundress and grabbed her purse before heading downstairs.
Zavier had already left. Marissa was still in the living room. âMiss Skyler, heading out?â
Skyler nodded. âMarissa, I have some errands to run. Iâll be back before dusk. Iâll grab takeaway for dinner out, so donât wait up for me.â
âGot any plans? We donât have a driver, and itâs tough to hail a cab around here. Can you drive? If so, Mr. Zavierâs garage has some spare cars; feel free to take one, Marissa offered.
