Chapter 1646
Skyler wasnât surprised that Zavier had a thing for girls bursting with energy.
The girl sent tennis ball after tennis ball flying across the court, rapidly emptying a small cart. Wiping sweat from her brow with a towel, she then turned to look at Skyler. Her gaze was part appraisal, part disdain. âSkyler? From Southern Port?â
âYeah, Skyler replied.
âPlay tennis much?â The girl, Desiree, questioned with a hint of challenge.
Back home, the Blues had always emphasized the arts over athletics. Skyler could paint, play piano, and recite poetry like a pro, but sports? Not so much. âNope,â she admitted.
Desiree swung her racket and smacked another ball served up by the machine. âTennis isnât exactly a high-rollerâs game. A few private lessons outside, and youâre set. What, a couple hundred bucks a pop? Your folks canât spare that?â
A couple hundred bucks. That was a monthâs living expenses for many folks.e2
Skyler didnât like the tone, but she didnât bite. âWhat do you want with me?â
Desiree twirled her racket, sauntering closer with deliberate steps. âHeard youâre engaged to Zavier?â
âThatâs right.â
That single word was like a nail hammered into Desireeâs heart, making her eyes flash with hurt. âSo what if youâre engaged? You think that means Zavierâs actually going to marry you?â
âI havenât assumed anything,â Skyler said coolly.
Desiree wasnât buying it. âYou donât think so? Skyler, lies will make you ugly, you know.â
âAre you Zavierâs girlfriend?â Skyler cut to the chase.
Desiree almost said yes; the word was on the tip of her tongue but got swallowed back down. Sheâd been chasing Zavier since freshman year, and now, as a senior, everyone thought they were an item. But deep down, she knew Zavier wouldnât even give her a second glance. How could she possibly be his girlfriend?
Desireeâs silence seemed like confirmation to Skyler. âIf youâre his girlfriend, then you should know the engagement is just family pressure. Heâs made it clear he doesnât like me,â Skyler stated.
Desiree seized on that. âHe said he doesnât like you?â
âYou can relax,â Skyler assured her.
But Skylerâs calm and her indifferent references to Zavier only irked Desiree more. In a flash, she grabbed Skylerâs chin. âListen, Skyler, Zavier is out of your league. Stay away from him if you know whatâs good for you. Otherwise, Iâll make sure you get kicked out of Capital College.â
Skyler was usually the peaceable type, but even she had her limits. She pushed Desiree away. âIf you want Zavier, heâs all yours. But if you try any dirty tricks on me, I wonât make it easy for you.â
Desiree was exasperated. Did this woman think Zavier was some kind of prize to be won?
Skyler continued, âI donât know you, and I donât want to. So, please, keep your distance. I donât want any part of whatever youâre planning.â
With those parting words, Skyler walked away.
Desiree, fuming, slammed her racket against the wall, snapping it. âWho does she think she is? Thinks she can threaten me at Capital College?â
Another girl, who had called Skyler to come here, approached. âHey, donât sweat it. Getting worked up over someone from a backwater town isnât worth
it.â
Desiree shot her a cold look. The girl was clueless. Southern Port wasnât some backwater, and the Blue family was anything but ordinary. Otherwise, why would the Rivera family even consider an alliance through marriage?
