Chapter 1679
Reid leaned against the locker, his gaze locking with Garrett and Zavier. âGuys, donât sweat it. Iâll set her straight. She wonât be causing any more trouble for Zavier.â
Garrett crossed his arms, a smirk playing on his lips. âMake sure you do. After all, sheâs the prom queen. Sheâs gotta have some standards.â
With a casual flick of his wrist, Garrett followed Zavier out of the hallway. Once they were at a distance, Garrettâs curiosity piqued. âIâve heard you havenât found the perfect theme song for your game. What exactly are you looking for?â
Zavier shoved his hands into his pockets, his eyes distant. âSomething that fits the game. Something that makes you want to play as soon as you hear it.â
Garrett thought for a moment. âYouâve been approaching all these famous musicians. Sure, theyâre great at music, but that doesnât mean they get gaming. Your player base is mostly college students. Why not scout for talent right here on campus?â
Zavier nodded. âThe marketing teamâs already on it.â
Garrett playfully punched Zavierâs shoulder. âAnd here I was, thinking Iâd come up with a brilliant idea to earn some brownie points with you. Seems Iâm always a step behind. Bummer.âe2
Zavier didnât respond, his gaze drifting to the right at the crossroads. An image of Skyler flashed through his mind-her hands over her eyes, mumbling and scampering away like a startled quail.
A woman who didnât fight for her betrothed and fled like a scared bird had no place in the cutthroat Rivera family.
Back in the dorm, as soon as Skyler returned, her roommates Amanda and Emma cornered her.
The moment the door shut, they pounced. âSky, are you out of your mind?â
Skyler rolled her eyes. âWhatâs it this time?â
Amanda blurted out, âDo you even know who Logan is? Do you have any idea how many girls are after him?â.
Without giving Skyler a chance to respond, Amanda continued, âLet me tell you, Logan was my top pick. Heâs so out of my league I didnât dare approach him, so I settled for someone else. And even that guy didnât accept my gesture. But look at you! You treated a confession from a guy like Logan as if it were trash.â
Skyler shrugged. âIâm not interested in who he is or how many girls like him.â
Amanda threw her hands up. âSky, are you completely clueless about love?â
Skyler stood firm. âNo matter how great he is or how many girls like him, if I donât like him, thatâs that.â
Emma couldnât stand it any longer. âHeâs one of the most popular guys on the basketball team, second only to Zavier. Sky, how could you turn down such a catch? If I were you, Iâd at least give it a shot. If it doesnât work out, then break up. Youâve got to play the field while youâre young, or youâll regret it when youâre older and no one wants to date you.â
Skyler knew their intentions were good. âGuys, we all have our own ways of thinking. If you want to date, go for it. But please, stop trying to persuade me.â
Skylerâs priorities were different. Love was a luxury she couldnât afford. Her focus was on earning money to bring her younger sister here, not on romance.
Amanda softened. âWeâre not trying to push you into anything, just reminding you that life is short. Youâve got to have some fun.â
âIâll keep that in mind,â Skyler said with a forced smile, grabbing her bag.
âOut again?â they asked in unison.
âYeah, Iâve got a tutoring gig tonight.â
Amanda sighed. âBe safe. And donât come back too late.â
Emmaâs eyes lit up with excitement. âMom/just got her bonus and sent me some cash. How about I treat you both to some barbecue tonight?â
Skyler wanted to decline, to save every penny, but Amanda had already eagerly agreed. With no room to argue, Skyler accepted, âAlright.â
