Chapter 1681
Not far away, a car was parked on the side of the road. Inside, Garrett looked over at Zavier with concern etching his features. âZavier, you sure you donât want to step in?â
Zavier remained silent, unresponsive.
Garrett pressed on, âZavier, like it or not, Skyler is your fiancée. What if something happens to her?â
Zavier lit a cigarette, took a long drag, and exhaled slowly before he replied, âIf she canât handle this, howâs she gonna hold her own with the Riveras?â
Garrettâs eyes widened in disbelief. âZavier, those thugs out there are notorious bullies from the Capital. No one gets away from them unscathed. What if Skyler gets hurt? Can you live with yourself?â
Still, Zavier said nothing, just smoked his cigarette.
Garrett wouldnât let up. âAre you hoping something happens to Skyler? So you can call off this engagement and send her back to the Blue family with some dignity?e2
âLook, I know youâre not thrilled about this arranged marriage, but Skylerâs just as much a victim in this as you are. You can be mad at the world, but donât take it out on her.
âAnd Reidâs sister, is no angel either. Acts like butter wouldnât melt in her mouth when sheâs with us, but behind our backs, sheâs as vicious as they come.
âZavier, if you wonât save her, let me do it. If anything happens to Skyler⦠Ah, Zavier, are you even listening to me? Skylerâs the one whoâs truly innocent here.
âZavier, you must know why Reidâs sister is after Skyler, right? Itâs all because of you. Desiree got a thing for you, and Skylerâs caught in the middle, an object of her jealousy.â
Garrett was on a roll, but Zavier remained silent, his brooding gaze fixed on Skyler, surrounded by three goons.
That usually meek woman was surprisingly calm. Her slight frame stood tall, her voice clear and decisive, âI choose the first option.â
Zavierâs lips twitched into a half-smile at her answer. Smart girl, he thought, playing her cards right.
The thugs werenât surprised by her choice; they seemed to have expected it. âTypical foolish girl! Did you really think weâd offer you a choice?â
Skyler retorted, âEven in your world, a dealâs a deal.â
The lead thug was growing impatient and signaled his cronies with a look. âLetâs get this over with, and quick.â
Skyler clenched her fists, trying to remain composed. Her phone was in her purse, out of reach for a discreet call for help. She had to think of a way out before things escalated. âHow much did Desiree pay you?â
The thug scoffed, âWhat? You trying to outbid her?â
As long as they were willing to talk, Skyler had a chance. âI bet you donât even know why Desiree sent you after me.â
The thug laughed, âWeâre here for the cash. Why should we care about her reasons?â
Skyler pressed on, âDo you even know who I am? Let me tell you, if anything happens to me, youâre all dead men walkingâ
The lead thugâs face darkened, anger flaring in his eyes. âLittle girl, you canât scare me. And today, youâll learn what happens when you try to intimidate us â itâll cost you double the pain.â
Skyler continued, undeterred, âI think you should know about the Rivera family. Desiree has her sights set on Zavier, but Iâm the one Hudson picked for him. If you mess with someone from the Rivera family, do you really think theyâll let you off easy?â
The lead thug barked a laugh. âHa! Youâre Zavierâs fiancée? Like Iâd believe that. Stop your squirming, girl. Play nice, and maybe youâll suffer less.â
The tension was palpable as the stand-off continued, with Garrett still imploring Zavier to intervene. But Zavierâs expression was an unreadable mask, his thoughts hidden behind a cloud of cigarette smoke.
