Chapter 207
âCheck out your car first. If thereâs no problem, weâll get the paperwork done and the rideâs all yours,â Mr. Evans proposed again.
âWell, I only have the right to use it. I canât really say itâs mine,â Cornelia knew that the whip the Hartley Group provided for its executives was more of a company loaner, the minute you walked out the door, the company snatched back the keys
Whatever rights, as long as youâre the one behind the wheel thatâs all that matters,â Mr. Evans replied.
Fair enough.â Cornelia responded
After giving the car the onceâover, they sorted out the paperwork. Only then did Cornelia realize that the car was registered under her own name, not the Hartley Groupâs.
âHold on a sec. Mr. Evans Why is the ride registered under my name?â This wasnât supposed to be the case
âWell, itâs the companyâs new way to keep top talent on board Work hard for us, and well not only throw in a set of wheels, but maybe even a new crib. This kinda stuff happens all the time, no biggie, Mr Evans explained
Hearing it was pretty much par for the course, Cornelia didnât push it.
With the car keys in her hand, Cornelia made a beeline for the bossâs office President Hartley, thank you so much!â
Marcus, buried in paperwork, didnât even look up âWhatâre you thanking me for?â
âThe carâ
Finally lifting his eyes from the pile of documents, Marcus looked at her. âI donât need to bother with such trifles. If anyone deserves thanks, itâs yourself for being a good workerâ
His tone was as aloof as when sheâd first started working for him. This made Cornelia very happy. It felt like a normal boss employee relationship.
âRight, Cornelia responded, then left the office with a smile
Watching her retreating figure, Marcus wondered if she realized he was the one who gave her the car?
Pulling out his personal phone, he sent a text to Cornelia as Jeremy, âI sent you a little gift. Itâs already at your company. Let me know what you think.â
Another gift!
Getting presents always made her feel indebted
She was willing to give Jeremy a second chance because he seemed like a good guy, not because she wanted his money.
âCâmon, Jeremy. Are you trying to buy me off with your money?â Cornelia texted back
âCould I even buy you off with money?â Jeremy replied.
âNoâ
âWell, weâre legally married. We didnât sign any prenup, so half of my property is technically yours. Whatâs wrong with giving you a few small gifts?â
âOur relationship isnât exactly like a normal married coupleâs.â
âBut we could be if you wanted us to.â
Cornelia didnât know how to respond to that.
Back at her desk, there was a fancy gift box waiting for her.
Thatâs a gift from your hubby,â Ben said.
Cornelia looked at the card. Sure enough, it was from Jeremy
Before she could even open the box, Jeremy texted her again. âHeard that your heel gets injured easily. Iâve sent you a pair of shoes and some ointment. Hope you like it.â
Inside the box were two tubes of ointment and a pair of black chunky heel leather shoes.
Like the necklace sheâd received the day before, the shoes were brandless, but the leather felt soft and delicate.
Since it was just a couple of tubes of ointment and a pair of shoes, it probably didnât cost too much. So, Cornelia decided to accept this gift.
She tried on the shoes. They were just the right size and super comfortable.
