Chapter 468
Zavier gave Marcus a long thoughtful look, then finally exited the scene
After Zavier left, Ayden returned to Marcusâs side.
He hung his head low clearly upset, âI screwed up big time. You can punish me however you see fit
Marcus looked at Ayden From this angle, the scar on Aydenâs face was strikingly visible, like a centipede crawling across his face, âDoes your face still hurt?*
Ayden shook his head, âNoâ
Marcus said, âYou can go now
Ayden was taken aback. He looked up at him, âYouâre not gonna punish me for my blunder?â
Marcus turned around, looking out the window. âI havenât outed Cornelia yet, so the vultures in the business world wonât be onto her. The moment I reveal her identity, a lot of the danger lurking around me will shift onto her.â
Woodpine didnât have the hustle and bustle of Riverton. Even downtown, there werenât many skyscrapers. But the morning sun seemed redder than in Riverton, giving off a warm feeling rather than being blinding Just like the girl in the room next door. One look at her could brighten his day.
Ayden said, âPresident Hartley, donât worry. As long as Iâm here, Iâll protect Cornelia. Even if it costs me my life.â
Marcus replied. âYour life matters too.â
Ayden was surprised again, even feeling a sudden urge to cry a rare emotion for someone usually so stoic.
Marcus waved him off, âOff you go.â
Ayden said, âWeâve replaced all the hotel staff with our people. Iâll stay on guard here, so Cornelia wonât be in danger. Itâs morning already, you havenât slept all night. Maybe you should get some rest?â
Marcus replied, âNo need
He wanted to protect Cornelia himself, he didnât want to relive the fear he felt last night.
He was Marcus, the teenager who wasnât afraid even when fighting for control of the Hartley Group. He had faced enemies, or had guns pointed at his head.
But last night, when he learned that Cornelia was alone in Woodpine, the fear that surged from the bottom of his heart at the thought of her being kidnapped was paralyzing
Why did he feel this way? Marcus couldnât figure it out.
Ayden went back to his room, only to find Dr. Dawson waiting for him, âMom, what are you doing here?â
Dr. Dawson took a couple of steps closer, examining him, âMarc didnât punish you?â
Ayden shook his head
Dr. Dawson wiped away a tear, âItâs my fault. I knew how dangerous it was around Marc, but I let you work for him to repay Granny Luisa, who saved our lives.â
Ayden replied impassively, âMom, donât say that again. If it werenât for Granny Luisa and President Hartley, we might have been dead a long time ago.â
