Chapter 516
She didnât get a reply. Maybe he didnât see it or it was a delay in the message Cornelia figured if she gave him a call, he should hear it, right?
All she wanted was for him to be safe!
But, when she dialed Jeremyâs number, what came through the phone was a cold, emotionless robotic voice, âThe number you have dialed is currently switched off, please try again later.â
He had turned off his phonel Why did he turn off his phone? A sense of unease quickly spread through Corneliaâs heart.
She didnât want to think the worst, so she kept reassuring herself that Jeremy must be asleep and would reply to her message when he woke up
But such consolation was useless, the unease continued to spread, quickly reaching every corner of her body, making her hand holding the phone tremble slightly
*Nelly, why donât you and me go for a walk in the yard? Granny Rebecca had noticed Corneliaâs anxiety all day, but since she didnât say anything. Granny didnât ask
âSureâ Cornelia quickly put away her phone and helped Granny walk towards the yard.
The yard was a sea of flowers. It was springtime, and all sorts of red, blue, and white flowers were in bloom, a sight that could lighten anyoneâs mood.
Southern Peak was close to Riverton, but the housing prices were different. The best houses in Southern Peak were still cheaper than an average house in Riverton. So, Cornelia didnât think Jeremyâs house with a big yard in Southern Peak was anything fancy.
After a while, Granny Rebecca finally asked. âNelly, is something bothering you?â
Cornelia didnât want her grandma to worry, so she shook her head, âNo.â
Granny Rebecca gently tapped her forehead, âYou can fool others, but not me. Whatâs troubling you?â
Seeing she couldnât hide it, Cornelia confessed her worries, âI messaged Jeremy this morning and he hasnât replied. I tried calling him and his phone was off. Iâm worried something happened Granny Jeremyâs okay, right? He wonât leave me like my dad did, right? I wonât be unable to reach him ever again, right?â
Cornelia had experienced abandonment too many times. Her mother left when she was very young. Her father died in a car accident when she was still naive. Her boyfriend left her during college.
So, when she didnât get a reply from Jeremy, it made her very anxious.
Granny Rebecca understood and hugged Cornelia, âNelly, Jay is overseas, and thereâs a time difference. Maybe he just turned off his phone to sleep when you messaged him. Or maybe heâs just overslept because heâs tired. Donât worryâ
Cornelia rested her head on Grannyâs shoulder. âGranny, thatâs what Iâve been telling myself. But Iâm scared Iâm scared something bad will happen to Jeremy because of
meâ¦â
Granny Rebecca felt a pang of pain hearing this, âNelly, your parentsâ departure had nothing to do with you. You canât blame yourself for everything. Got it?â
Cornelia murmured, âBut if it wasnât for protecting me, dad wouldnât haveâ¦â
