Chapter 571
Comelia looked at his expression, quietly saying. âA couple of mornings ago, Mr. Rivera called me to pick you up from Riverside Terrace Club And when I got there, I saw you in bed with Natalia.â
She left her words hanging in the air, expecting Marcus to explain. But instead he blurted out, âSo you think Iâm messing around? Or that I might like Natalia?â Cornelia softly said, âYou know how they say men often let their physical desires dictate their actions, regardless of whether they have feelings for the woman.â
Marcus had a dark look on his face, âSo you donât trust me?â
Comelia replied, âItâs not about trust, itâs just.â
She had seen it with her own eyes. She just wanted to hear his explanation, but he didnât say anything. How was she supposed to trust him?
She was feeling confused, unsure about how to steer the conversation to her advantage.
Marcus then asked, âWhat time did you get to Riverside Terrace Club that morning?â
Cornelia clearly remembered the time, â6.30 in the morningâ
Marcus explained, âThe previous night, Zavier asked me to drink. He tried to get me drunk, even spiked my drink. When I was out of it, Natalia showed upâ
Cornelia listened quietly, waiting for him to continue.
He went on, âNothing happened between Natalia and me. I left Riverside Terrace Club at exactly 6:30. You carne right after I left. Thereâs no way you could have seen me in bed with Natalia If Iâm guessing right, this is all Zavierâs doing to mess with your head. You shouldnât believe it.â
Comelia admitted, âIâve suspected as much.â
She knew that what she saw might not be the truth. Zavier was like a madman now, willing to do anything to get his hands on Skyler.
Marcus asked. âDo you trust me?â
Cornelia nodded, âOf course I trust you.â
Hearing her say she trusted him and watching her obediently nod her head, Marcus gave a slight smile. His eyes behind his glasses held a hint of humor, âWhat about the third point?â
Cornelia said, âThe third and most important point is, I have never had romantic feelings for you. I have nothing but respect for you as my boss.â
Marcus was speechless.
That was indeed the most important point, but it also wasnât. Because she was already his wife!
Cornelia continued, âAnd President Hartley, please donât ask me hypothetical questions in the future. I donât want any rumors between us, or people thinking I got promoted because of you.â
âFine, no more hypothetical questions in the future.â Marcus said. As for rumors, that was even less likely. Once he came clean about their relationship, he would announce to the world that she was his wife, Marcusâ wife.
The conversation ended there, and an awkward silence settled between them.
Cornelia awkwardly averted her gaze, picked up a book from the shelf that she hadnât finished reading last time, and sat down at the desk to read.
She loved reading. Once she got into a book, she would become engrossed and less aware of the world around her.
She wasnât sure how much time had passed when she heard Marcusâ deep, pleasant voice again, âCorneliaâ¦â
âHmm?â Cornelia looked up at the sound of his voice, meeting Marcusâ captivating and complex gaze. His eyes seemed to hold a multitude of emotions she couldnât understand, making her feel uneasy, âMarcus, is there a problem?â
He replied, âIf thereâs anything you donât understand, you can ask me.â
Cornelia responded, âThank you, President Hartley. Iâd like to try and understand these things on my own.â
