Chapter 693
Cornelia was quick to say, âGran, I can walk by myself, I donât need him to help.â
Granny Luisa gently patted Corneliaâs head. âIn Riverton, thereâs a tradition. The first time a new bride officially enters the house, her husband has to carry her through the front door. Itâs supposed to symbolize a smooth life thereafter.â
These old traditions, Comeliaâs hometown of Rosenberg also had them.
For example, on the wedding day, when the groom came to pick up the bride, the bride had to stand on a high place, implying that her status would be higher after marrying into her husbandâs family.
But now it was a new era, Cornelia naturally didnât buy into all this. Besides, she believed in mutual respect and support between two people. In marriage, both parties were equal, and there was no oppressing each other.
However, since Granny Luisa believed in these things and meant well for her, Cornelia chose to go along with it to keep the old lady from feeling upset.
Marcus didnât believe in these old rules either, but he respected othersâ beliefs. Besides, carrying his bride was a good thing for him.
He walked over, got to Comelia in two steps, squatted down halfway, and didnât feel awkward about it at all. âWifey, hop on.â
The word âWifeyâ slipped gently, softly into Corneliaâs ear, like a stone tossed into her serene heartâlake, slowly raising waves.
The last time Marcus drunkenly called her wifey, she didnât know he was her husband then and kicked him twice in annoyance.
Who wouldâve thought that the second time he called her wifey, there would be so many people watching, making her feel a bit embarrassed.
Seeing Cornelia blushing, Granny Luisa quickly said, âNelly, donât be shy! Heâs your husband. Itâs his job to carry you. Hop on so he can carry you.â
Cornelia quickly climbed onto Marcusâ back. He slowly stood up, being a lot taller than her, and she felt like she could touch the ceiling from his back.
Marcus carefully instructed, âWeâre about to go through the door. Duck your head. Be careful.â
Cornelia quickly ducked her head, whispering in his ear, âIâm not light, and your bodyâs not fully fit. Can you carry me? Wonât I hurt you?â
Marcus chuckled, âYou underestimate your husbandâs strength.â
Cornelia, âThe elders and Bri are here. Donât say anything inappropriate.â
Marcus, âWhat inappropriate thing?â
Was he really clueless or was he just playing dumb?
Granny Luisa followed them, talking as she walked, âOnce Nelly officially walks into the Hartley familyâs door today, she is one of us. You must love her well and never allow her to be wronged.â
Marcus, âGran, Nelly is my wife, I certainly wonât let her be wronged.â
Granny Luisa said, âTake Nelly to your grandfatherâs picture. I want him to know Marcus married a good daughterâinâlaw.â
âSure thing!â Marcus obediently led Cornelia to his grandfatherâs picture, then let her stand on the ground.
Cornelia looked up at the picture of a young grandpa. There was a trace of him in Marcusâ face.
