Chapter 792
âAre you feeling unwell? Do you need a doctor?â Cornelia asked.
Hannah shook her head, âI just donât want to be with that guyâ
âWhatâs the matter between you and President Dixon?â Cornelia asked.
âWhat could possibly be the matter? Hannah retorted, âOur marriage was a transaction from the getâgo. He never truly considered me his wife. To him, Iâm like his plaything, to be summoned when he needs me and discarded when he doesnât.â
âYou canât think like that. You two are legally wedded, you are equals. Cornelia tried to reason with her.
Hannah let out a soft laugh, âEquals? Cornelia, do you really think I can talk about equality with guys like Steven, without sounding naive?â
Perhaps she had been too sheltered by Marcus, oblivious to the harsh realities of the world outside.
Talking about equality with the men in this room was only possible if they were willing to treat them as equals. Otherwise, it was all just empty talk.
âWhy not? Heâs your husband.â Cornelia said.
âIf he doesnât respect me, doesnât allow me my own rights, then I donât need such a marriage.â Hannah scoffed, âCornelia, look at those four men over there. If they donât agree to a divorce, who among us can get a divorce? Skyler is the perfect example. She left everything behind to escape Zavier, and nearly lost her life in the process.
Cornelia was left speechless.
âOur circumstances are different. The people we face are different, and our understanding of marriage is different.â Hannah continued.
Upon hearing this, Cornelia felt a pang of sadness. She couldnât comprehend Hannahâs predicament, which led her to believe Hannahâs thinking was flawed, âIâm sorry.â
Why are you apologizing? If you still think this way, it means President Hartley truly cares for you. You should cherish him.â Hannah said.
Cornelia nodded, âI will.â
Their conversation was interrupted by the sound of a broken wine glass. The three of them turned towards the direction of the sound, only to see Zavier smashing another wine glass against the wall, like a madman.
The root of it all could be traced back to a few minutes ago.
After the men had moved to the inner room, Steven seemed distracted, frequently glancing towards Hannah.
Lucas teased him, âSteven, canât bear to be away from your wife? Canât handle being a few feet away from her?â
Steven turned his gaze away, âWhat were you guys just talking about?â
âWe were talking about Zavier. Since he canât find Skyler and canât stay single forever, we suggested he heed his fatherâs advice and remarry.â Lucas said.
Steven said, âZavierâs feelings for Skyler run deep. He definitely wonât remarry in the near future. But if more time passes, who knows?â
Zavier finished his drink in one gulp, placing the glass in front of Marcus, âMarc, how about we make a bet?â
Marcus gently pushed up his silverârimmed glasses, calmly replying, âI donât gamble!â
