Chapter 803
â
Marcus told Cornelia, âSkylerâs a grown up now, and youâre just her friend You donât have to carry the world on your shoulder for her
Cornelia wanted to say something but Marcus cut her off, âSkyler wants her freedom and she broke up with Zavier to stand on her own two feet Whatâs the difference if I send someone to watch over her, to help her out? That might not be the freedom sheâs after
Comelia tried to interject. âWhat if
Marcus cut her off again, âYouâre worried about her getting into trouble? Canât fend for herself if she canât find work? Any of us could end up in hot water, but the chances are slim to none. If it does happen, well, thatâs just life. We all face the same struggles, like not being able to find a job and make ends meet. Take you, for instance, without a job you canât even put food on the table. Who else is gonna help you out apart from your kin? Skyler wants her freedom, doesnât want to be a burden on anyone Every decision sheâs making now is her own. You should trust her and wish her well. No need to worry your pretty head over it.â
Marcus words left Comelia at a loss for words
Just then, Zavier walked up, a newly lit cigarette in his hand, âMrs. Hartley, could we have a little chat?â
Comelia eyed Zavier warily and moved to stand in front of Marcus, âI donât think weâve got anything to talk about!â
âAre you sure about that?â Zavier asked, âI think weâve got plenty to talk about Like my wife, Skylerâ
âMr. Rivera, you look like you could use a good nightâs sleep You should head back to your hotel Marcus ushered Cornelia away without even saying goodbye to the other couples.
Both of them had been drinking and couldnât drive, so Marcus had already called for a driver.
The driver, Austin, asked, âMr. Hartley, where to?â
âTo the old house To keep his promise to his grandma, Marcus decided to stay at the old house for at least two weeks. He didnât want to let the old lady down.
âRight awayâ Austin nodded and then drove off.
Marcus immediately raised the partition in the car, separating the front from the back. He then patted the seat next to him, âCome here
Cornelia was a little nervous, âMaybe we should wait until we get home, you know
Marcus laughed. âWhat do you think I want to do?â
Cornelia didnât respond. She thought he wanted to kiss her..
When Cornelia didnât move, Marcus leaned in close to her, resting his head on her shoulder, âCornelia, Iâm beat Mind if I take a nap on your shoulder?â
Cornelia didnât respond. Turned out he just wanted to use her shoulder as a pillow She felt a bit silly for overthinking.
Marcus fell asleep on her shoulder in no time. He had stayed up with her all night by her grandmaâs side and had been running around all day. He must be exhausted
Thinking about this, Cornelia felt a pang of sympathy for him. Not wanting to wake him, she kept still until they reached the Hartley Mansion.
When they arrived, Marcus was still asleep. Cornelia told Austin to go rest and she would stay in the car with him for a while.
Austin understood and left without asking any questions.
Cornelia looked down at Marcus, taking in his long eyelashes under the frame of his glasses, his sharp features. Even from this close, it was hard to tear her eyes away from him.
Cornelia wondered more than once if she would have agreed to marry him if he hadnât been so good looking when her grandma suggested the idea.
She probably wouldnât have
Although people always said not to judge a book by its cover, it was human nature to be attracted to beautiful things. Even when it came to finding a job, goodâlooking men. and women definitely got more attention.
Just as Cornelia was lost in her thoughts, Marcus lazily opened his eyes and their eyes met.
