Chapter 929
Zack continued, âGranny Rebeccaâs sudden death hit Nelly hard, you know?â
âYeah, I know, replied Marcus
âAnd youâre still texting away?â Zack flared up, not giving Marcus a chance to speak.
He let out a stream of thoughts like a machine gun, âNelly seemed okay aside from the initial shock of Granny Rebeccaâs passing You think just because sheâs acting fine, sheâs really fine? Nope! Iâve known her for over twenty years, I know her better than you. Iâm sure, right now, Nellyâs going through hell. She might even be sobbing alone under her blanket
After Zackâs rant, Marcus calmly replied, âWhat if I was actually texting Cornelia?â
What Zack said was what Marcus had in mind, which was why he sent Cornelia messages and distracted Cornelia with other things. He didnât want to see Cornelia heartbroken more than anyone else.
He couldnât take her pain for her, so all he could do was help her sort out other issues and keep an eye on her mood, so she wouldnât have to suffer alone.
Zack asked somewhat awkwardly. âYouâre texting Nelly? Why donât I believe that?
Marcus calmly replied, âDo you matter?â
That hit Zack hard, âI donât matter?â
Marcus ignored him.
âIâm Nellyâs friend, and we grew up togethe. Weâre tight. She trusts me. Iâm older than her by a few months. Iâm like her brother, so Iâm kinda like family. I matter!â
Zack went on and on, trying to prove to Marcus how important he was to Cornelia. But he was shot down by Marcus with a simple, âIâm her husband, the one whoâll be with her till death do us part.â
It felt like someone had struck Zackâs heart with a hammer, shattering it and leaving him gasping for air.
Marcus smirked at the âwoundedâ Zack, then continued texting Cornelia. He wasnât much for small talk, but he made an effort to find topics Cornelia might be interested in, helping her through the night.
The night passed slowly as they chatted.
In the morning, the rising sun announced the arrival of a new day. Cornelia, who hadnât slept all night, got up early.
Coming out of her study, she saw Zack dozing off on the couch, head in his hands. Afraid he might hurt his neck, Cornelia quickly fetched a pillow for Zack to lean
Despite staying up all night, Marcus was still full of energy. The moment Cornelia opened the door, his gaze immediately shifted to her, âBriâs asleep in your room, want to go back and rest?â
Cornelia shook her head, âNo need.â
She had tried to sleep but couldnât. She didnât want to waste any more time trying to sleep.
