Chapter 957
Marcus held her tightly and said, âIf you have another nightmare, even if itâs just a dream, remember Iâm right beside you. That way, you wonât be scared
anymore.â
Cornelia nodded and replied, âOkayâ
Waking up from her sleep, Cornelia felt refreshed and rejuvenated. However, she had this nagging feeling that she was forgetting something. After some thinking, she finally remembered and quickly asked while getting out of bed, âIs Natalia awake?â
Marcus replied, âSheâs awake. But she doesnât want to talk or leave her room. Patricia prepared a lot of delicious food for her but she refuses to eat.â
âShe had been abused before, so she might resist people getting close. Iâll go check on herâ Cornelia hastily got out of bed, didnât even bother to freshen up, and was ready to dash out of the room.
Marcus pulled her back, âCornelia, let me finishâ
Although Cornelia was physically in the room, her mind was already in the other bedroom, âGo on.â
Marcus felt a bit disappointed, âI think she might feel uncomfortable with me around. I have some work to do, so Iâll go to the office. Patricia will stay here to take care of you guys. Iâll come back later.â
Cornelia agreed, âOkayâ
Marcus added, âCornelia,â
Cornelia asked, âYeah?â
Marcus wanted her to show a bit more concern for him, but didnât want to pressure her, so he said, âNever mind, go aheadâ
âOkay.â Cornelia turned and left without hesitation.
Marcus watched her leave, speechless.
Cornelia came to the other bedroom and said, âNataliaâ
Upon hearing Corneliaâs voice, Natalia, who had been lying on the bed like a lifeless doll, immediately turned her head towards her, âCornelia.â
âItâs me.â Cornelia sat by her bed and gently stroked her hair, âNatalia, are you hungry? Do you want to get up and eat something?â
Natalia clung to Corneliaâs clothes, her eyes filling with tears as she cautiously asked, âCornelia, is it really you? Am I dreaming?â
Cornelia pinched Nataliaâs chubby cheek a bit harshly, âDid that hurt?â
Natalia shook her head slightly. âNoâ
Her answer made Cornelia feel a pang in her heart, âNatalia, if it hurts, you should say so. You donât have to bear it anymore. I will protect you and wonât let you get hurt again.â
Cornelia knew she had pinched Natalia a bit too hard. Surely, it must have hurt.
Nataliaâs denial of the pain could be because compared to what the Reese family had done to her, this was nothing. Or perhaps, Natalia had been abused so much that she had become numb to pain.
Natalia asked, âCornelia, do you still want to be my good friend?â
Cornelia replied, âI donât want to be your good friend,â
Before Cornelia could finish, Nataliaâs eyes dimmed, âBut I really like you and want you to be my good friend.â
Cornelia said, âCan I be your sister? Iâm an only child and Iâve always wanted a little sister. It would be great if you could be my sister.â
Nataliaâs eyes lit up, yet she couldnât quite believe her ears. She cautiously asked, âCornelia, are you serious? You really want to be my sister?â
Cornelia responded, âIâd be happy to, but the question is if youâd like to be my sister.â
Having received an affirmative answer, Natalia leaped into Corneliaâs arms, âSo, can I call you âsisterâ from now on??
Holding Natalia, Cornelia said with a mix of happiness and sorrow, âOf course you can, Natalia.â
