Chapter 40
âHey darlingââJenny screeched in excitement as she sighted Carla coming into the restaurant. She pulled her into a warm hug, barely managing to keep
them both on their feet.
âI thought youâve gotten so carried away with the bliss of marital life that you forgot your long time friendâ She gushed out in glee, barely managing to contain her excitement
Carla threw her head back, laughing âI could never forget the brat Iâve got for a friendâ
Jenny slapped her lightly on her arm and led them over to an empty table by the window. A few tables away from them sat three ladies whispering. though Carla wouldnât call it that as their conversation drifted clearly to where she sat with Jenny.
*Are you sure sheâs the one?â One of them with red bangs asked the other two, sparing Carla another quick glance.
*Of course, I would recognize the bitch anywhere, Liam has been my crush since forever so I keep tabs on all his activities A brunette replied with a
sneer
âWell, I would say Blake fell for her face if you ask me, I mean look, sheâs actually a looker, she has got the cute face and all that âThe last lady, a blonde remarked, staring at Carla with eyes filled with curiosity.
âI think she lied him down with pregnancy or something, Liam would never marry someone like her, canât you see sheâs way below his status?â The brunette suggested and the others murmured to her speculation.
This was one of the reasons she avoided going to the popular places but she knew she couldnât stay hidden in his mansion forever. She gritted her teeth, the nasty bitches could say what they wanted, she didnât care.
âSo.â Jenny coughed out discreetly, trying to bring Carlaâs attention back to her in which she succeeded.
âHow is marriage life? How is it going with you and Liam?â She asked eagerly
Carla eyed her âWell, weâre fine just as we should be âShe took a sip from her juice and stared out of the window into the street.
Jenny threw her a glare âIâm not gonna accept that you know, thereâs more to it than what you just said, your expression gave it all away so come on, spill
it outâ
Carla sighed wearily âWeâre cool really, itâs just that⦠âShe stopped mid sentence and took another sip while Jenny looked on with interest.
âThat what?â She prompted as she realized Carla had no intention of saying anything anytime soon.
âCalm your ass down, will you? I was about to get to the point âCarla said with a roll of her eyes.
âIâm trying!â Jenny whined in reply and leaned forward.
Carla sighed again and went on Things has been awkward between us latelyâ
âIt has always been right from the day one I saw you two togetherâ Jenny cut in, interrupting Carla in the process.
âSorryâ She muttered as she realized what she just did âAnd thatâs because you keep denying the feelings you have for each other, sorry I spoke without. being asked to âShe apologized yet again, but didnât sound sorry one bit.
Carla rolled her eyes, not surprised at her friendâs attitudeâ You always do âShe replied nonchalantly.
And mind you, I donât have feelings for him, get that into your head, Jenny She added with a snap.
âYeah sure you donât âJenny fired back sarcastically.
âYou know you do, so can you please do away with the crazy, ridiculous notion that you donât?â She added with a glare.
Carla shook her head âI donât have feelings for him Jenny, canât you just accept the fact? Weâre only bound legally by the contract
Now Jenny saw red, her face was flushed in anger as she regarded her friend with stern eyes.
*Here comes the damn contract again! Iâm sick of hearing that all the time! I canât accept a stupid fact that is not reasonable my dear, canât you see it?
Itâs so glaringly clear that you have the hots for each other!â She waved her arms in the air exasperatedly, short of breath already.
*Geez, why are you being so hard on yourself? Youâre punishing yourself, you know that, right? You know the truth but wouldnât accept it even to yourself!
*Youâre so wrong Jenny, we both agreed that⦠âCarla tried to reason with Jenny but was rudely cut off.
âItâs fine! Iâve had enough of all these, this is why you said things has been awkward between you two, right?â Jenny asked knowingly.
*Yes *Carla answered truthfully, suddenly finding interest in staring at the floor.
âSo where did things go wrong and why?â Jenny asked again, brushing a strand of hair away from her face.
The question brought Carlaâs eyes up to meet her friendâs questioning ones âI just told you, didnât I?â
âAnd Iâm asking the reason for the awkwardness between you guys?â Jenny shot back.
âI⦠I donât know âCarla mumbled in reply.
Jenny shot her a stern look âYou donât know?â
âL..L⦠âCarla stuttered and stopped when she couldnât get any words out without stammering
Jenny raised an eyebrow quizzically and sat back on her chair, folding her hands under her breasts âIâm all ears Lady Blake, I donât have all the time in the world, I have other pressing matters to attend to âShe probed, which made Carla roll her eyes.
âI thought you were happy to see me?â She asked, frowning her perfectly carved eyebrows.
I was, I still am, so get on with what you wanted to tell me âJenny said, making sure to bring the subject back to what they were talking about.
Carla took a deep breath âI think itâs my faultâ She took a pause.
âThat?â Jenny probed further, wanting her to get to the main point already.
