Chapter 41
âThat I made things awkward between us of course âCarla replied finally
âHow and why would you think such a thing?â Jenny asked out of pure curiosity.
âIt all began the day after our wedding. I made things go bad to the extent that I refused to let him make love to me Carla let out everything and ended it with a tired sigh
âWhat?â Jenny shrieked so loud that the ladies who sat a few distance away from them jumped a little, startled. They murmured among themselves, staring at Jenny like she was crazy Jenny didnât seem to mind the looks she was receiving though If there was anyone who would do whatever she wanted without a care in the world or giving a damn what people thought, it was her. She just didnât care
She stared at Carla earnestly âWhy?!â But she didnât wait for Carlaâs reply because she continued âBut thatâs crazy Carla, you know that, right? Why the heck would you do that? Heâs your husband for Peteâs sake! Even if itâs in name only, heâs still your legally wedded husband!â She whispered harshly. trying to keep her voice low because the ladies had started giving them curious glances.
âHey, keep your voice down! Those ladies are not out of earshot yet you know âCarla cautioned with a dark gaze.
âIâm trying! âJenny whispered back, looking back at the ladies to glare at them.
She returned her gaze to Carla âWell?â
âWell what?â Carla asked casually
âAre you trying to make me repeat my words? I asked why you would do that âJenny snapped.
Carla shrugged âI just felt itâd be better if we maintain the distance between us to avoid unnecessary heartaches in the future
Jenny smirked âDid you admit that thereâs this possibility that you might actually love him so youâre trying to protect yourself? And what about the purpose of the contract you signed? The baby? I donât think youâre pregnant yet thoughâ
Carla sighed âI donât think so too, I donât feel pregnant â She laughed but it didnât quite reached her eyes.
All the more reason to enjoy your limited time with himâ Jenny said with a wink and laughed deeply.
âJenny!* Carla snapped but only earned another laugh from her friend.
âWhat? Iâm just trying to help! Jenny laughed again.
Carla glared at her âKeep your help to yourself, I can take care of myselfâ
âCan you indeed? Jenny asked in all seriousness now.
Carla squinted her eyes âWhatever do you mean by that?â
âWhat do you think? Jenny countered back.
Carla sighed âLook, Iâm tired of you speaking in riddles, letâs talk about something else, shall we?â
âSure, but one advice sweetheart, do the right thing. Time is not on your side, you know. You signed the contract for the money, didnât you? So do the worth, Iâm sure you wouldnât regret itâ
Carla frowned âI didnât say I wouldnât give him childâ
Jenny scoffed âOh really? Then why donât you want him to make love to you?â
Carla closed her eyes briefly and exhaled a little sigh âI just told you, Jennyâ
Jenny slammed her hands hard on the table without even knowing it until it was too late âBut thatâs absurd!â
Carla widened her eyesâ Calm down Jenny, this is your restaurant!â
âIt can go to hell for all I care! Iâm talking about your life, Carla! This is the most important phase of your lifeâ Jenny shouted.
âOkay Iâve heard you, please calm down âCarla begged because they were starting to attract attention from the people there.
Jenny exhaled a deep breath and gradually, her eyes came back to normal.
âSo what will it be, woman? She asked, popping her hands under her chin.
âIâll try âCarla said, hoping Jenny would comply with her words.
Jennyâs gaze sofened and she looked at Carla hopefully âYou will?â
Carla nodded, pasting a small smile on her lips âIâll do itâ
Jenny squeezed Carla hands in hers Thank you. Besides, itâs way too soon for you guys to start having issues, youâre still in your first few weeks of marriageâ
Carla shot her a playful glare Now enough about me, letâs talk about you. Whatâs the latest with you?â
Jenny sighed and shrugged âNothing interesting I guess, as you can see, Iâm doing fine along with my restaurantâ
âYouâve gotten over him, havenât you? Carla asked, looking straight into Jennyâs eyes, searching for answers.
Jenny laughed humorlessly âOf course, do I look like Iâm not over him yet?â
Carla smiled at her tenderly âNo, Iâm just asking, thatâs allâ
Both of them sat in comfortable silence until Jenny spoke up.
She started talking âThereâs this guy⦠âBut Carla cut her off.
12
âGuy? I wonder which guy managed to catch your interest this time Carla said eagerly with a wink, leaning forward.
Jenny laughed âIâm not interested in him, Dummy, heâs justâ¦â
Carla cut in âI never said you were
âOh just shut up! Jenny snapped, tired of her friendâs comebacks already.
Carla laughed âOkay maâam, you can go ahead and say whatever itâs eating you upâ
Jenny threw her a glare but let the remark pass by peacefully âWell, I met this guy when you travelled to Houston and
Again, Carla interrupted her âWhat?! Itâs been this long and you didnât tell me about him?! Iâm gonna kill you, Jennyâ She gritted her teeth in mock anger.
Chill, girl! Jenny laughed
*Only for now âCarla conceded temporarily and Jenny continued.
I kinda bumped into him or he bumped into me, I donât know which, all I know is, we argued before we parted ways. But⦠I couldnât stop thinking about him since then Jenny took a deep breath.
*Okay * Carla probed.
Jenny glared at her â Calm down, will you?â
Carla just rolled her eyes Why should I? Last time I checked, you were so eager to hear my miserable story tooâ
