IN ANOTHER LIFE | 15

Ian opened the hospital room and smiled at June who raised his head from his book.

"Hi," June said, with a smile. He closed the book and waited for Ian to settle down next to him.

"Hey," Ian  said, and took June's hand.

June titled his head at Ian and raised his eyebrow.

"I wanted to ask you something." Ian began slowly.

At June's encouraging nod, Ian took in a deep breath.

"Marry me," Ian blurted out.

Ian  winced at his own bluntness. The words that he had practiced in front of the mirror were long forgotten.

June looked at him with widen eyes. June was sure he misheard Ian. He had only a week before he will be forced out of this body, he wanted to spent all this time with Ian but what Ian said surprised him.

"What?" June hissed as he pulled away his hand from Ian's.

Ian pursed his lips as June looked into his eyes waiting for Ian to laugh and tell he was joking.

"Marry me," Ian repeated more softly.

June let out an incredulous laugh and shook his head. Dating Ian and staying in this world even after his mission was complete was already a huge thing for June. Marriage was a whole different thing! It was just another memory that would haunt both Ian and him.

"You have got to be kidding me!"

Ian shook his head.

"Jeremy is going to act as our minister and our best man and Alicia is going to be our wedding planner."

June let out a sharp breath and looked at him with wide eyes.

"What?"

Ian nodded, "We don't have much option with the venue since we are hiding it from our parents so, we will get married at the apple orchard behind your house."

June shook his head trying to say Ian was worrying about completely different things.

"Ian! We are minors!"

"Thus, this is a secret from the adults."

"I am going to die!" He exclaimed.

Ian flinched at his words.

Both of them looked at each other, the silence was pricking them. June regretted bursting out like that but he would no longer hurt Ian anymore.

However, Ian was determined to make June agree. He took a deep breath and reached out to hold June's hand again.

"I know," Ian said, he gave his hand a small squeeze. Ian looked at his wide hazelnut eyes and continued, "I know, that's why I want us to marry. I want to call you mine."

June squeezed back Ian's hand, "I don't want to hurt you anymore." He whispered, "You are already in so much pain while we are dating. What-"

Ian shook his head, stopping him.

"Please," Ian pleaded, "Give me more memories."

June sucked in a deep breath. He knew he had signed up for the pain and happiness that came with Ian and his relationship. He loved Ian and Ian loved him. That is all that matters. Death was nothing.

June nodded.

"Okay."

Ian gave June a charming smile and sat on the bed next to him.  He cupped June's face and smiled softly at him.

"Will you marry me?" Ian asked.

June smiled as he circled his hands around Ian's wrist. He leaned forwards and gave a light kiss on Ian's lips. His hazel eyes were glistening with tears as he nodded.

"Yes."

***

Ian glanced at his watch again and silently cursed.

The ring he had ordered had not arrived yet. He was about to call Euphel when he suddenly got a message from her.

Euphel (3:08 p.m) : The ring cannot be ready today : ( I am so sorry.

Ian cursed under his breath and slipped his phone inside his suit jacket.

Today, was their planned wedding was going to take and they were going to get married with the rings, Ian had ordered. Without the rings the marriage would be incomplete.

Ian looked around wondering what to do, when a convenience store caught his eyes. He quickly entered the store and bought the first thing that had came in his mind as a substitute for the rings.

After making his purchase, he caught a cab to June's house. Once, he reached June's house, he directly made his way to the apple orchard which was behind the huge mansion.

Last night, he, Jeremy and Alicia had prepared the marriage venue there. As Ian made his way deeper into the orchard, he heard a dog barking along side with soft music. It was the song he and June had danced to before June lost his control over his leg muscles.

It was almost dusk by the time he reached the clearing. The trees surrounding the clearing had fairy lights around them, it looked beautiful.

June was dressed in a white suit and was on a wheel chair and laughing merrily as he watched Cookie and Jeremy play.

Alicia was by the music stereo adjusting it.

"I am here guys," Ian announced.

He looked at June who smiled at him. Ian walked towards him and placed a soft kiss on his forehead.

"You look amazing," Ian mumbled.

June smiled, "You are looking quite dashing yourself."

Ian watched Cookie run along the clearing playfully chasing Jeremy.

"Who bought Cookie here?" Ian asked.

"Jeremy bought him here to be our ring bearer."

Ring.

Ian winced as he turned to June.

"About the ring..." Ian trailed off.

June looked up at him and waited.

"The order got delayed, I am so sorry," Ian said and explained what had happened. He reached for his suit jacked and took out two candy rings, "So, I bought this from the convenience store to substitute our rings."

June looked at the candy rings and giggled.

"I am really sorry, June," Ian said as he kneeled down next to June, "I really wanted to give you a perfect wedding—"

June held Ian's head and pulled him into a searing kiss.

"Oh you have done so much for me," June mumbled softly against Ian's lips, "So very much."

Ian rested his forehead against June and smiled.

"I love you very much."

"I love you too."

After some minutes, everyone got in position and got ready for the marriage ceremony. Even Cookie stood obediently by Jeremy's side, who was dressed up in a very fancy looking robe. “For the ceremony!” he had defended himself when Ian pointed out.

June and Ian were facing each other. Ian kneeled down for the ceremony.

Jeremy cleared his throat loudly, everyone  looked at him, when he opened a small notebook.

"I had to review a lot of movie for this moment." He grinned.

"We are here to witness the marriage between June Weng and Ian Wang."

"Do you Ian Wang take June Weng as your lawfully wedded husband?" Jeremy asked and quickly added, "This wedding is illegal by the way."

Ian rolled my eyes at him. And looked at June, he squeezed his hand softly. Ian thought about all the times, they spend together. June had changed him in so many better ways. June would forever be a part of him, even if he is no more.

"I do."

"Do you June Weng take Ian Wang as your lawfully wedded husband?"

June smiled. All through his traveling this was the happiest he had been with a  male lead. He realized how much he had fallen in love with Ian this moment. He wanted to give up everything he had to be with Ian for the rest of his life. His chest felt full and his heart was beating a nervous and happy beat. He smiled somewhat tearfully and nodded his head.

"I do."

Jeremy nodded, "Your vows?"

"In another life things will work out for us," Ian said, his hold on June's hands tightening. His heart seem to skip it's beat with every word he said.

Ian and June had came up with their marriage vows together. Since, their story was getting cut short in this life, they would make it to the end in their next life.

"In another life," June said with a nod, his eye threatening to spill with tears, "In another life where there is no sickness and dying."

"In another life," both of them promised.

The echo of their vow was melancholy.
