The day before the showdown
"Can you believe it?" Julie asked "I mean that they would even try getting our sholarships back. And it's all because of that jerk Rick. Who even names their kid Rick? What kind of stupid name is that?"
"Well you should be happy you're staying. But please do one thing for me?"
"What?" she asked
"Kick Varsity's ass" i said, grinning
"Oh we will after this" she said, smiling
The next day
Today was the day that the ducks would be playing against Varsity. Julie already left for training which I told her good luck for. I was getting dressed for the game when I heard a knock on the door.
"Just a second!" i yelled while pulling my red shirt over my head. When I opened the door it was Adam
"Adam we talked about this I-"
"I'm not here to apologise even tho I want you to know I'm sorry" i glared at him "Anyway, if we win Charlie's hosting an After Party and he wanted me to invite you" he said
"You guys are verry sure of your win" i said
"What? You aren't?" he asked
"What...No I am I-"
"I'm just messing with ya" he said, chaking his head. We both avoided eye contact and looked at the ground. When I decided to break the silence.
"Play good okay?"
"I will" he said, looking into my eyes.
"Well you should go train or something. Whatever you hockey players do before a game" i said
"I will ye" he said and turned to leave "Oh Layla?"
"Yes?"
"I will score a goal for you"
"Thank you Adam. Good luck." i said. I don't know how but he can still make me feel butterflies in the stomach.
At the rink
I walked into the stadium and it was already packed. I tried looking for a seat when someone called my name. I turned around and it was Linda. She waved at me to come up to her so I did.
"Hey Linda, is this seat taken?" i asked, pointing at the seat next to her
"No it isn't. I kinda wanted you to sit next to me, not someone i don't know" she said
"Is Charlie nervous?" i asked
"What do you think, they all are" she said
We both turned towards the rink because the game was about to start.
"Fasten your seatbelts and hold onto your hats everyone. Oh, do we have a special showdown for you. David versus Goliath in a titanic grudge match. The winner can truly say that he is the symbol of Eden Hall"
Julie looked up in the stands and her eyes locked with mine.
"Good luck" i mouthed
"Thank you" she mouthed back
"Tonight, the Eden Hall varsity Warriors do battle with the Eden Hall freshman Ducks. That's right folks. The sight of the Duck is here at Eden Hall for at least one night"
The team began going inside the ice rink, all smiling at each other. They all skate in one circle and touching the ice with their fingertips.
"It appears they're paying homage to their departed friend and mentor, Hans. The touching of the ice is a Norwegian symbol of respect"
They skated some circles when they huddled up with their coach.
Julie's pov
"All right, let's go hunting for goose eggs, huh? Come on, hands in" Coach said.
Everyone puts their hands on each other. "On three, quack"
we all looked at each other and started smiling "One, two, three"
"Quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack" We chanted.
The crowd began chanting with us. I looked up at Layla and Linda and they were quacking too. The sight of them made me smile.
"Go Ducks!"
Layla's pov
I watched everyone getting lined up. I was happy when he put Julie in the goal instead of Goldberg. No hate Goldberg.
Adam's pov
I was taking the face off against Rick so I was getting in place.
"You're gonna wish like hell you stuck with us" he said, getting in place. I rolled my eyes.
"Save the trash talk" I said
We waited till the whistle to start fighting for the puck. When the whistle was blown Rick pushed me on the ice and skated away
"The Puck is dropped, and here we go. Oooooohhh, Varsity comes out hard."
I saw Averman falling on his stomach. Caused by him being tackled. I pushed that player against the walls. Rick was trying to score when Julie went forward and saved the puck.
"Oh! Big save by Julie the Cat. At this rate, it's gonna take a miracle for the Ducks to hang on"
The puck stayed in the hands of Varsity. I tried to get it back. I mean I had to. I promised Layla I would score for her.
Varsity tried taking another shot but Julie saved it again. All of the sudden a Varsity player jammed into her.
And the ref wasn't saying anything. Uhhh! It was gonna be one of those games.
Once Charlie got in the game he shoved Rick on the ice.
"Woehoe Go Charlie!" I heard someone yell in the stadium. It was Layla and Linda. They shrugged and sat back down. But their cheering stopped when Varsity got hold of the puck again.
"Warriors are swarming"
Again they tried to score but Julie saved again. We were lucky Julie was in the goal and not Goldberg. No hate Goldberg.
"Gaffney comes up a bit again! Conway gets the rebound and ices the puck. I don't know how much longer these Ducks can hang on."
I don't know what we were doing but Varsity kepped on getting hold of the puck and tried shooting.
"It's Goldberg, Conway and Averman. Everyone's getting into the act now. They're clearing out the garbage in front of the net. They aren't gonna allow any cheap goals tonight."
I was skating up to some of the players and the puck was easily in my hands. I looked for someone to pass to and the only one free was Guy so I passed. When he shot it was saved by Varsity.
"First shot on the Varsity goalie. Save! Ah, he came up big"
Varsity kept on taking the puck and tried shooting at Julie. Luckily she saved them all.
"All right, go Julie!" Connie yelled from the sight
The buzzer went saying that the first period was over. We all went to the box and the coach gave us some advice and motivation.
If we would wanna win we would have to try harder in the second period.
