56. Get Off Her Back
From the side view of her eyes, Heidi sighted the glinting knife descending.
âAhhhh!â She screamed with all her might, shutting her eyes.
Then a loud crash came from behind her followed by the sound of someone groaning.
In her panicked state, Heidi didnât realize that the grip on her neck had loosened, until she felt a thud.
Turning around, her heart did a summersault as she came face to face with Lucas.
Holding a broken branch in his hand, his whole being oozed off a dark dangerous aura, his murderous eyes fixed on the bleeding guy who had passed out on the ground.
Heidi was shaken to the core, not believing her eyes.
She literally jumped on the man, hugging him tightly, her shoulders trembling with fear.
Lucas let go of the tree branch. His heart beat uncontrollably as he hugged her back.
âI- I was so scared, Lucas.â Heidi sobbed. âIf you hadnât come, would I have lost my life?â
âItâs okay. Youâre safe now.â Lucas stroked her back.
As Heidiâs tears flowed freely, her whole body shaking, he pulled back and used both thumbs to wipe her tears.
In his eyes was an intense emotion, an unknown fear tugging at his chest about what would have happened to her if he hadnât come in time.
It was as if time had stopped. They both stilled and gazed into each othersâ eyes.
Heidi wanted to believe she was back in the kidnappers den and dreaming all about this.
Her fingers shaking, she reached up to touch the side of his face.
Her warm fingers against his cheek sent a strange sensation coursing through his system-
Then something snapped, bringing them back to the present.
Heidi quickly pushed him away, and Lucas put some distance from her, scratching the back of his neck.
An awkward air hung for a few seconds.
Then Lucas noticed her arm and he broke the silence. âHeidi, youâre bleeding.â
âI know.â Heidi pursed her lips. âDid you come with a car? I canât lose my precious blood, it is rare and I might not find a donor.â
The awkward atmosphere instantly disappeared as they both focused on her wound.
âWhat else do you think?â Lucas replied. âThat I walked all the way from the city to this place?â
Heidi glared at him. âLucas Harrison, youâre so gutsy to even make a joke at this moment.â
Lucas didnât know which of his words was a joke.
âMy car is nearby, letâs go.â He supported her back to his car.
After walking a few distance, Heidi sighted his car covered in dust.
He helped her inside the car, then sat in the driverâs seat, and raced out of the place.
âHow did you find me here?â Heidi asked.
Lucas took a few seconds to reply. Then he said, âIt was a coincidence. I was just passing by.â
Heidi laughed sarcastically, putting on a look of disbelief. âIt is evident that my kidnapping was a set-up. Lucas, I never knew you come to these kinds of places for sightseeing. Oh, what a splendid view.â
âShut up. Isnât saving you enough?â Lucas murmured.
Heidi chuckled a bit. âYou mean saving me from your own father?â
Lucas frowned.
Heidiâs expression turned serious. â
Blake Harrison was behind this, stop pretending you donât know. Are you afraid that I can report him to the authorities?â
Lucas looked away from the road. staring at her, he replied, âNo.â
Taken aback by his response, Heidiâs lips parted. âYou mean I can take him to the authorities?â
âWhy not?â Lucas shrugged. âHe clearly put your life in danger. You have the right to seek justice for yourself.â
Heidi looked at him for a while as he drove back to the city.
Lucas wasnât overly corrupted after all. There might be a speck of light inside the manâs heart which was as dark as the night.
But hearing his next words made her let go of every one of her initial assumptions.
âHowever, you canât take him to the authorities. Iâll see what I can do.â
âWhat do you mean by I canât take him to the authorities?â
âHeidi-â
âEven if heâs your father, it doesnât give him the right to hurt me, right?â Her eyes flashed with rage. âYou said it yourself that I have the right to do so.â
âDo you think you can win a case against Blake Harrison?â Lucas gave her a serious look.
âOh, is that what youâre worried about, my most caring Ex-husband?â Heidi said with mocking realization.
Lucas went silent. âAt least, I saved your life.â
âHow sweet. If Blake had managed to successfully get rid of me, would you still say that?â
For several minutes, none of them spoke.
The car eventually arrived inside the city, and Lucas took her to a clinic to get her wound treated.
âNo, thanks. Iâm capable of caring for myself.â
Obviously, Heidi was mad at him, and she stopped him from following her inside.
Lucas, who was as stubborn, didnât walk away.
After the nurse was done treating Heidiâs arm, he sat beside her. âYou should think out of the box, Heidi. If you take the case to the authorities-â
âAre you worried about the GK Groupâs reputation?â Heidi didnât let him conclude.
Lucasâs brows furrowed. âThat is part of the reason why. But Iâm most worried about Grandpa.â
Hearing him mention Grandpa Winston, Heidiâs fury subsided a bit.
âGrandpa and Dad are already at odds with each other. If Grandpa hears about this, what do you think might happen?â
Grandpa Winston would surely be heartbroken, and it might have an impact on his health.
âI told you Iâll take care of it. Dad will no longer hurt you. Just let it go.â
Even Heidi was worried about Grandpa Winston. âBut Iâll never forgive Blake Harrison. Damnit! Just tell Blake and Stella to get off my back!â
Heidi stood up and stormed off.
