Chapter 410 Feels Different After assuming Xavierâs identity, he was determined to never go back to being a fugitive who lived on the brink of peril. Instead, he aspired to live a life of privilege, with all the luxuries it came with, and to have Xavierâs woman as his own.
He hated Winnie to the bone.
Harold lowered his head to leer at Winnie.
He then traced Winnieâs features with his bandaged hand.
Ha! Sheâs blind. I bet she didnât see this coming. Iâm not in a hurry to teach her a lesson now. She is already blind, so sheâll wait for me to come home to the mansion every day. From today onward, Iâm her man. That isnât enough, for I want to be her master! Iâll make her life a living hell! This is just the start of the game.
Harold wanted to head to Fairchild Corporation now as he wanted to see how wealthy Xavier was.
âTurn around and head to the company,â Harold ordered the driver after having made up his mind.
Winnie gaped in surprise. âAre you not tired? Didnât we agree to head back to the mansion first?â
âIâm not tired. It has been a few days since I last went to the company, so I suddenly feel like heading there,â Harold explained. âIf youâre tired, we can find a spot ahead to stop the car. Iâll get someone else to send you back.â
Before Winnie could even open her mouth to respond, he added, âYou know what? You should jut return to the mansion. Itâs not safe for you to be running around when you canât see. You must be tired after traveling around all day. Iâll be fine alone.â
With that, he instructed the driver, âStop the car somewhere nearby.â
He then asked Louis, âDid anything happen at the company these few days?â
Hearing his superiorâs question, Louis promptly selected some important matters to report to him.
Winnie didnât even get to utter a word even after the driver found a spot to stop the car.
After the car rolled to a halt, Harold told Louis, âWeâll both take the car behind this one. Letâs go.â
Louis hopped out of the passenger seat and opened the door to the back seat.
Harold was about to get out when he recalled that Winnie was still in the car.
He initially planned to ignore her, but now that he thought about it, it wasnât time to give her the cold shoulder yet. Hence, he turned around to give her a peck on the cheek.
In a hoarse voice, he said, âBe good and wait for me at home.â
Winnieâs brows furrowed. âBe careful. You should come back earlier to get some rest if thereâs nothing important at work.â
âI know.â A smile nudged Haroldâs lips as he got out of the car without looking back.
Winnie listened to his receding footsteps and quickly summoned Louis softly. âMr. Tanser, take good care of him. Heâs injured and needs to rest to recuperate. If thereâs nothing urgent at work, tell him to come back home and rest.â
âDonât worry, Mrs. Fairchild,â Louis assured her. âI know what to do.â
âGood.â Winnie bobbed her head. âHurry, go after him.â
The car door closed after him, and Winnie settled back into her seat. The driver swiftly drove away.
Around an hour later, right before Winnie was to arrive at Lagune Mansion, Josiah suddenly called her.
Winnie made sure that her phone would announce the caller whenever there was a call, so she immediately knew it was Josiah.
After answering the call, she had yet to say anything when Josiah asked, âWhat are you both up to? Why did Xavier switch off his phone?â
âI donât know either,â Winnie answered. âMaybe it ran out of battery. He didnât use his phone for the past two days, so itâs normal for him to forget to charge it.â
âHmm, that might be a possibility.â However, Josiah still felt that something was off. âIs he not with you?
You sound like youâre still in the car. You havenât arrived home yet, right? Why isnât he saying anything?â
âHeâs on his way to the company, and Iâm not with him. Iâm going to arrive home soon.â
âHuh?â Josiahâs confusion heightened. âDid something big happen at the company? Why would he head to work now? He should be resting instead.â
Winnie massaged her temples. âYeah, that was what I thought, too. Nothing serious happened at work.
He mustâve thought he should head there as he hadnât been there for a few days.â
âOkay, then. He has always been a workaholic, anyway. Back at the hospital, I overheard Old Mr.
Fairchild and Mdm. Beatrice talking. It seems that Mr. Fairchild is dissatisfied with Xavier as he hasnât been focusing on work. Mr. Fairchild has expressed his dislike of you, too. Now that Xavier is eager to return to work, maybe Mr. Fairchild will change his mind about you. Itâs clear Xavier is head over heels in love with you.â
As Winnie remained silent, he exclaimed, âMs. Garland, are you still there? A penny for your thoughts.
Why arenât you saying anything?â
âWhat?â Winnie snapped out of her reverie. âOh, nothing. Youâre right. Mr. Fairchild doesnât like me and thinks Iâm not fit to be his daughter-in-law. He wants me to break up with Xavier.â
âSeriously?â Neither Xavier nor Winnie had ever told Josiah about the matter, so he had no idea about it.
He sounded doubtful. âThat sounds serious. Is someone talking bad about you behind your back?â
âNo.â Winnie knitted her brows and revealed, âHe told me that personally, so itâs true. Iâm not afraid that youâll laugh at me. Heâs actually worried that I wonât be able to bear children as my health isnât well.â
Josiah knew Winnie wouldnât joke over such matters. Comprehension dawned, and he blurted out, âWas that why you asked me to arrange for an infertility checkup that day?â
âYes,â Winnie admitted readily. Hearing her answer, Josiah fell silent.
No wonder Xavier told me to keep the results a secret. He wasnât only worried that Winnie would feel bad knowing that she was infertile, but he was also attempting to prevent his father from trying to break apart their relationship.
Josiah still had to keep it a secret, so he replied, âThe results showed that you are perfectly healthy, so he doesnât have to worry at all.â
Winnie grunted in acknowledgment before inquiring, âHave you noticed that Xavier seems different now?â
âHow so?â
âThere are many details. In fact,..â
âIn fact what?â
Winnieâs brows scrunched up. âIn fact, I think he no longer has feelings for me from the way he speaks to me.â
âThatâs impossible. He loves you dearly. It must be due to the change in his voice. He could be a voice actor with his previous voice, but now he sounds like a monster. To be honest, I couldnât get used to his voice just now. However, the damage is irreparable. You need to learn to live with it.â
âMm. Youâre right. I must be too sensitive.â
