Taken by healers and doctors, the three Ludancia professors left the scene, with Mikhail following them as well. Luka wanted to stay, but it would be bad if the professors found out about her relationship with Claude at this point, so she went with Mikhail too.
ãSo, how did I do?ãClaude asked proudly.
ãThe way you moved, it was hard to believe you were the same guy who was cowering before the fight.ãIvan said.
ãWhat?! Th-That was Hikaruâs fault for setting that fight up out of nowhere!ã
ãAnyway, you seemed to have gotten better with the sword.ãHikaru said.
Putting more points on Weapon Mastery really did make one more proficient with it. Weapon Mastery did not equate to power. The latter was affected by Strength, Power Burst, and the quality of the weapon itself.
Not really for me.
Hikaruâs specialty was Stealth. Proficiency wasnât really necessary for surprise attacks.
ãI-I know, right?! It did feel like it, but you just confirmed my suspicions!ã
ãDamn it. Is your job class really that incredible?ãIvan asked.
ãItâs not exactly an extremely incredible class. So donât get carried away, Claude.ã
Ivan assumed it was all thanks to Claudeâs job class. They really couldnât think of any other reason he got stronger either.
ãBut he won against instructors! He can get cocky for a bit, canât he?ã
ãYou parried Kilnenkoâs rapid attacks with your sword, right?ã
ãHmm? Ah, yes. I did well... didnât I?ã
ãYou were standing completely still. A bit of a surprise attack and you would have been thrown off balance.ã
ãUh...ã
ãYou were too focused on your sword that you forgot to take a proper stance. It happens often to people who improved all of a sudden.ã
ãUgh...ã
Hikaru himself experienced it first-hand when he maxed out his Throwing Skill. His mind couldnât keep up with his body at all.
ãYou canât afford to get cocky until you get used to your job class.ã
ãOkay.ã
ãHeâs right, Claude!ãIvan cut in.ãIt looked like Professor Mikhail changed his opinion about you. Iâm sure heâll work you hard starting tomorrow!ã
ãWhat? You mean thereâs gonna be another demon besides Hikaru?! Get me out!ã
ãDid you just call me a demon?ã
ãWell, you are one. Duh.ãIvan said.
ãWhat do you mean? I didnât train with Claude.ã
ãWell, you see...ã
Apparently while Hikaru was in Forestzard, Claude fought against Ivan and the other Jarazack students and they kept telling him that âHikaru is much nastier than this.â
ãIvan...ã
ãW-Wait a sec! I know! Letâs go celebrate!ã
ãWhat?ã
ãIâm sure Professor Mikhail has no complaints about what you showed. In fact his eyes were screaming âI want to fight this guy too!â So letâs celebrate!ã
ãThatâs a great idea. All that tension quickly left my body and now Iâm exhausted. Letâs get a light drink.ã
ãYou guys...ã
ãItâs important to take a break too. Gotta keep up the motivation!ã
Ivan somehow managed to talk his way out of trouble. Hikaru was then kidnapped to Three Cheers for Booze.
ãTo Claudeâs victory! Cheers!ã
Three drinking cups clashed. It was lunch time, so there was a fair amount of people in the pub. Many were drinking, as it was common in this world to drink even during the day.
Todayâs menu was pasta with tomato sauce with plenty of meat and vegetables. The pasta itself was not the noodle kind, but shorter chunks. It tasted delicious with sauce seeping inside.
Hmm?
Hikaru sensed something off with the flavor. The food was delectable, as always.
Ah, right. Garlic.
He recalled how the food in Pondâs Pasta Magic tasted like it lacked something. Still they were delicious as the owner was a great cook. But this tavern used garlic. Maybe they grow locally?
ãIâm going to see the owner.ã
ãHey, Hikaru! Thatâs water youâre drinking!ã
Ivan grabbed his shoulders and forced him to sit down as he was about to get up.
ãOuch.ã
ãDrink some ale too.ã
ãLet me go. I canât hold my liquor. Please donât force me.ã
ãAlcohol actually makes you strong!ã
ãAnd you expect me to believe that? Anyway, I need to talk toâã
ãHikaru?ã
A voice came from the entrance. Lavia and Catherine. Hikaru didnât have a lot of opportunities to have lunch with Lavia as she frequently just stayed in the library. She had been spending a lot of time with her new friend Catherine too.
ãI didnât expect to see you here, Lavia.ã
ãCatherine said she wanted to come by again.ã
ãH-Hey! Itâs not like that! Any place wouldâve been fine, but I remembered Laviaâs tea so I suggested this place. Thatâs all.ã
She desperately tried to make an excuse, clearly not expecting to see the boys here.
ãWas this place actually so boorish?ãCatherine asked.
ãItâs a pub. You didnât know that?ã
ãMaster, can we have lunch for two please?ãLavia said as she took a seat beside Hikaru. Her voice was much softer than the hustle and bustle in the establishment, but the Master gave her a thumbs up.
ãHe heard you, huh?ã
ãHis ears never miss an order.ã
It seemed Lavia knew that for a while now. Hikaru considered opening the Masterâs Soul Board, but refrained from doing so. He couldnât just go infringing someoneâs privacy.
Now that I think about it, we donât know his real name.
In this world, the only form of identification were the guild and soul cards. There were no public registers. Names werenât that important here.
ãSo... any reason youâre drinking so early in the day? Do you even have the luxury to be doing this?ã
Catherine sat down beside Lavia and shot an icy glare at Claude. The young man groaned as he put back the cup he was about to drink on the table.
ãNot my problem.ãIvan muttered, downing his ale.
Come on, man. You gotta help him out.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
ãClaude just defeated three professors from Ludancia in successive matches. So weâre celebrating.ã
ãWhat? Explain yourself.ã
ãFor the record, I told them we shouldnât even celebrate like this.ãHikaru said.
ãClaude?ã
Hikaru dodged responsibility and threw it back to Claude. The Master, in the meantime, brought the girlsâ food.
ãW-Well... I, uhh... got stronger. So I wanted to check...ã
ãPlease explain clearly. This concerns our alliance, right?ã
ãUh...ã
Stammering, Claude began explaining what happened. Hikaru whispered to Lavia, ignoring them.
(Iâm surprised she said âourâ alliance.)
(Sheâs working hard, you know. Sheâs checking records of past Foundation Anniversaries in the library and what matters were brought up in the meeting. And sheâs making notes for our plan.)
(Really...)
Hikaru thought she didnât care, but Catherine was actually quite proactive.
ãAll right. I get it.ã
Claude finished explaining.
ãYou should be grateful to Luka. She should be telling them right now that you got sick of the Ludancia professor so you quit his class.ã
ãReally?ã
ãOf course. Iâm impressed she went with Professor Mikhail. She wants to put in a good word for you so they donât at least suspect your relationship with her. Sheâs a girl who can pull off something like that.ã
ãThatâs my Luka.ã
Catherineâs expression hardened as Claude started mooning over Luka.
ãShe wouldnât have to do all this if you didnât do anything stupid. You should be more aware of your actions.ã
ãUh... Iâm sorry.ã
ãYou too, Hikaru.ã
ãMe?ã
ãYou knew Professor Kilnenko would interfere and you let him be.ã
Apparently Claude even told her that part. Damn it, man... Hikaru scowled at Claude who gulped down his ale, feigning ignorance.
ãI knew he would poke his nose into our affairs sooner or later. So I thought, might as well deal with the problem sooner.ã
ãYou couldâve done it after the anniversary.ã
ãI thought about that, but we were in a rush as well. Itâs extremely important for Claude to be able to fight Professor Mikhail.ã
ãHmm...ã
ãI had some other, rather violent options too. Like Kilnenko couldâve been involved in an unfortunate accident last night. Would you have preferred that?ã
Claude turned pale.
ãYou even considered that? Damn, you really are the nastiest one around.ãhe said.
ãWhatâs this unfortunate accident about?ã
Ivan didnât seem to get it, but Hikaru refrained from explaining. Catherine heaved a sigh.
ãI guess itâs true. Whether this alliance works out is up to you.ãshe said.
ãMe? Why?ãHikaru asked.
ãSilvester said so before he went back to Zubura. He was even worried. If you went the wrong direction, the alliance could collapse.ã
ãHeâs exaggerating.ã
ãI just hope his worries donât turn into reality.ã
Catherine stared at him. Lavia then grabbed Hikaruâs arm.
ãI donât care if itâs you Catherine. Iâll get mad if someone bad mouths Hikaru.ã
ãIâm not criticizing him. Remember Rose Knight Paradise? âThe powerful knight, while reliable, is also dangerous.âã
ãWhat? Rose Knight Paradise?ãHikaru asked.
ãItâs the book that triggered my first conversation with Catherine. Do you want to read it?ã
ãSure, if I have the time.ã
As they were talking, the door to the pub opened, and a large man appeared. Professor Mikhail. The moment he spotted Claude, he yelled âLetâs have a practice match!â
Thatâs one more step forward, Hikaru thought.
