Thirty minutes after the meeting in Patriciaâs residence ended, the participants were out in Ville Zentraâs open sea.
ãSo this is the ship developed in the New World.ã
Biosâs knightsâ commander regarded the vessel with great interest. Steered by none other than Grucel, they were on one of Dream Makerâs warships that could hold a thousand people. Even with the VIPsâ security detail accompanying them, the ship had more than enough capacity.
ãCan you see that ship over there?ãPatricia pointed at an empty cargo ship out in the distance.ãItâs about half the size of this one. Itâs too run-down now and was scheduled to be dismantled, so weâre using it for this demonstration instead.ã
ãHow far away is it?ãForestiaâs Army Minister asked.
ãAbout 500 meters.ãDoriachi answered.
ãDonât tell me youâre going to use those cannons.ã
ãItâs fine.ã
ãI find that hard to believe.ã
The Minister wasnât convinced, but Doriachi remained calm. Even with the cargo shipâs size, it was still too far away that it only appeared as a dot from where they were. Each country in this continent possessed magic or purely fire-powered cannons, but none had a range that far.
ãHitting it is impossible from this distance.ãthe Minister said.ãIf you can, itâll change the tides of war.ã
ãIndeed. Even if the cannons could reach it, they would most likely miss.ãBiosâs commander added.
ãWe wonât know until we see it. Just show us already.ãGelhart cut in bluntly, his eyes filled with excitement.
ãVery well. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, I suppose.ãDoriachi said.ãGrucel.ã
ãSir.ãGrucel answered.ãPlease cover your ears, everyone.ããPrepare to load!ã
Dream Makerâs soldiers opened the gunsâ chambers and raised the warheads. Ten cannons were lined up on deck.
ãSir. Wind speed and direction within acceptable range.ãa spotter reported.
Grucel gave a slight nod.ãLoad!ã
Heavy, watermelon-like warheads were loaded into the guns.
ãActivate magic item!ã
A high-pitched shrill could be heard even with ears covered. At a glance, there didnât seem to be any change, but those with Mana Detection could see the barrel casting light.
ãPrepare to fire! Five! Four! Three! Two! One!ã
The moment the countdown reached zero, the cannonsâ roars in rapid succession, producing shock waves that rippled the observersâ clothes. The warheads, leaving behind a trail of smoke, followed an arched trajectory.
ãOh...ã
No one knew who gasped in awe. Many did. Three warheads plunged into the sea, raising columns of water, while the rest hit the cargo ship. They could see fragments flying into the air as the vessel was destroyed and started slowly sinking into the depths of the sea.
ãThere you have it.ãPatricia said in a somewhat louder voice.
Even with their ears plugged, they still found it difficult to hear right away. Still many of them watched the sinking vessel blankly, forgetting to even remove the hands covering their ears. Such a powerful weapon did not exist in this continent.
ãKing Doriachi. How effective are these weapons against the monsters in Grand Dream?ãPatricia asked.
ãThey can kill common monsters in one shot, but there are those that rise back up no matter how many shots they take. One example is the Yamamaneki, a monster as tall as the length of this ship. Our blast cannons couldnât kill them.ã
ãAnd thereâs many of those?ãBiosâs commander seemed flustered.
ãYes. About ten of them attacked when Dream Maker was destroyed. Tall walls canât hold them back.ã
The man gulped. He finally realized just how powerful the monsters in Grand Dream were.
ãHowever, Silver Face told us that by destroying the Yamamanekiâs core, we can kill them. As far as I know, there are no monsters that canât be killed.ã
ãI-I see...ã
Biosâs commander looked somewhat relieved. He shot a glare at Hikaru, as though saying âYou again?â Hikaru simply ignored him.
ãHey, Master Swordsman. Can you slice that shell?ãGerhardt said out of the blue.
ãEasily, if itâs only that fast.ã
ãThought so. I can probably do it as well. Iâm sure Gotthold can do it too with a little practice.ã
What? Hikaru thought. Slice what? Those warheads? Gotthold seemed to share the same thoughts as Hikaru.
ãI cannot do it.ãhe said.
ãNah, you can. Anyway, what Iâm saying is, some of us are as powerful as these weapons right here.ã
ãItâs not possible, Your Majesty.ã
ãIt is.ãThe king just didnât seem to listen.ãYamamaneki, eh? Interesting. Iâll crush them all. Gotthold, from today on, weâre going to train so you could cut an incoming shell from that weapon.ã
ãSir!ã
Gotthold stood in attention, though his eyes and tail seemed droopy. Poor guy, Hikaru thought. Yet he didnât refuse, showing just how loyal he was to Gerhardt and how much he respected the king.
Patricia chuckled.ãBeastman King, Iâm glad youâre optimistic. Very reassuring. Am I right, King Doriachi?ã
ãI-Indeed. I didnât think he would react like you expected.ã
Patricia already saw this happening. She deemed that demonstrating the true strength of the enemy would not have a negative effect, but rather, it would make them thrilled even. Perhaps she wanted to strengthen the allied forces by doing this.
ãIt might be a good idea to recruit skilled adventurers as well.ãLawrence said.
ãI agree with the Master Swordsman. Letâs go wild!ãGerhardt roared.
ãAnd who would pay them?ãPatricia asked in an exasperated tone.ãThen again, the more competent people, the better, I suppose. Weâll have to rely on individual skill in places where the cannons canât reach.ã
Patricia agreed to talk to adventurers. She expected that much fortune from the dragon stones. As a matter of fact, the Supreme Leader had already requested a lot of Vireoceanâs magic item researchers and experts to submit their research plans. Her goal was to improve her countryâs sorcery technology by performing studies that couldnât be done without huge dragon stones.
The first allied forcesâ meeting ended with various thoughts running in peopleâs minds.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
A notice was sent to Adventurer Guild branches throughout different countries by the end of the dayârecruiting adventurers ranked B and above to fight monsters in the New World. Once again, skilled and powerful people gathered in Ville Zentra.
