Blackmailing the Professor
The next day, Hikaru arrived at building C to find it locked, even though it was already time for classes to start. He tried using Mana Detection, but no one was inside.
ãShe bailed, huh? Isnât the student supposed to be the one cutting classes?ã
Left without anything to do, Hikaru started jogging.
The next day, Mille still wasnât around. He trained alone.
The day after, same thing.
And the day after...
ãStill not here...ã
Hikaru stood in front of building C.
ãI see. So thatâs how you wanna play. Hahaha. You thought if you kept doing this, I would eventually stop coming. Hmm, yes.ã
Hikaru smirked.
ãI will find you.ã
He went back home and waited till dusk. Fully armed, Hikaru headed out to town.
ãWhoo! Ale is so good! This is what I live for!ã
ãQuite the drinker as always, Mille-chan.ã
The manager smiled from behind the counter. They were in an establishment located three streets down the business district that only a select few in Scholarzard knew about. Small, with only more or less thirty seats, it was always full. Customers lined up the counter like birds on a power cable.
ãIf you keep on chugging them down like that, no guy will buy you a drink.ãthe man said.
ãThereâs no one crazy enough to even think about doing that in the first place.ãanother chimed in.
ãDamn right.ã
Middle-aged men, who looked to be regulars, burst into laughter. Each one shouted over the noise in the tavern whenever they spoke.
ãWhat did you say? If I tried, Iâm sure I can get a few men. You old coots better be grateful I even talk to you.ã
ãYeah, right! You always cry when youâre dead drunk, saying âI want a boyfriend.âã
ãI donât cry! Idiot!ã
ãCan you even stay out late? You mentioned something about not being able to return to the academyâs dorm right now.ã
ãAh, yes. Theyâre remodeling it at the moment. Iâm staying at a friendâs place.ã
ãWow! You have friends?!ã
ãWhy does that surprise you?! Iâll beat you up!ã
Sounds of commotion and menâs laughter rolled in the tavern.
ãThe nightâs still young! Iâm gonna drink all night!ã
ãYou look incredibly lively.ã
A voice came from behind.
ãOf course I am! I woke up in the evening!ã
ãWhat about todayâs class?ã
ãI didnât even plan on going! Ahahaha!ã
Mille laughed, waving her hand, before noticing the voice didnât come from the older men.
ãThat is very interesting, Professor Mille Crepes van Quad.ã
It came from the boy she met a few days ago. Mille trembled, being on the receiving end of someoneâs wrath from point-blank range.
ãYou taught me how to carry a short sword the other day. Now I have a question for you. Am I carrying one right now? If I am, for what purpose? ã
Mille let out a shriek as she fell from her chair, her face frozen in fear. Oops, I didnât mean to scare her that much, Hikaru thought.
ãH-Howâd you get here?! Thereâs no way you followed me without me noticing!ã
Oh, so thatâs what surprised her. If he hadnât activated his Stealth, she wouldâve noticed the moment he stepped into the tavern with her Instinct.
ãHey, kid. If youâre looking to start trouble, we wonât just sit here quietly.ã
ãYeah.ã
ãWell said, men! Throw this boy out!ãMille said.
She felt revitalized with the older men backing her up. Incidentally, her legs were spread open, and her underwear was in plain sight. Hikaru didnât even feel a tinge of sexual urge.
ãPlease, gentlemen. Iâm a student of the academy. It seems the professor has been piling up debts from all her drinking and she has to pay them back. Sheâll receive her salary by teaching me, but should you wish to shoulder her debts, you may do so. What do you say?ã
ã.........ã
ã.........ã
The men exchanged glances.
ãAll right. Letâs drink some more!ã
ãOh, right. Something funny happened today...ã
ãOh...ã
ãThey left me for dead! What happened to our bond?!ãMille exclaimed.
Hikaru smiled at her as she stood up, glaring at him.
ãYou reap what you sow.ã
ãIâm never going to teach you ever again!ã
ãOkay. Iâm actually meeting the principal tomorrow...ã
Mille quickly prostrated herself.
ãIâm deeply sorry. Iâll teach you starting tomorrow.ã
ãI see. Then Iâll cancel my appointment with the principal.ã
ãY-Youâre bluffing, right? You donât have any connection to the principal, do you?ã
Hikaru smiled.
ãYour smile is much scarier!ã
Mille screamed, but not one person in the noisy tavern cared. From that day onwards, she showed up in the tavern less often.
ãMilleâs tab was piling up. Doesnât really make any difference to my sales.ãthe manager told his regulars.
She was apparently causing trouble everywhere.
One attack was not enough to bring Mille down. She devised a plan to deceive Hikaru and go drinking, but Hikaru was quick to counter it. First he found out where she lived and the taverns she frequented.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
ãIâll make her work hard so she can pay her debt. Please tell me if she drops by to drink.ãhe told them and he was warmly received.
Lastly he went to wake her up every morning. And so Hikaru managed to put the short sword lectures classes back on track.
ãOh, Hikaru!ã
One day, he happened upon Mikhail Jarazack, the great sword instructor. Hailing from the land of hairy men, he was the one who let Hikaru in the academy as a scholarship student.
ãSo youâre already attending classes. Since when? Today?ã
ãNo. I started about ten days ago.ã
ãWhat?! Why didnât you come see me?!ã
ãWhy would I? I told you Iâm here to learn about short swords.ã
ãAh, short sword. The instructor is quite something, huh? Mille barely even teaches. Just forget about her and come attend my lectures.ã
ãActually...ã
Hikaru gave a smile.
ãSheâs actually doing her job. Iâm heading to her class right now. See ya!ã
ãWait, what? For real?ã
Hikaru started walking, leaving the puzzled Mikhail behind.
