Claudeâs Training
After the student alliance conference, everyone left including League. At the end, League asked Silvester to be the first president to which the latter agreed. The members were surprised, since Rumania was the most powerful country in Forestia. Yet League chose someone from Zubura. But seeing the crown prince readily accept (apparently they already talked about it beforehand) they didnât object.
ãCatherine.ãHikaru called to her as she was about to leave.
ãWhat is it?ã
ãI want to talk to you about something.ã
ãIâm not going to apologize for disagreeing with your proposal. Besides, itâs impossible to implementâã
ãI wanted to thank you.ã
ã...What?ã
ãThank you for offering a dissenting opinion.ã
ã.........ã
Catherine stared at Hikaru, unblinking.
ãAre you okay? Is this a new form of sarcasm or something?ã
ãNo. Itâs extremely dangerous to proceed with a meeting without anyone opposing or analyzing risks. In that sense, you were a great help.ã
ãItâs no big deal. I just pointed out what I thought was wrong.ã
ãYou wouldâve agreed if the others disagreed, though. Am I right?ã
ã.........ã
Hikaru seemed to have hit the mark as she went silent. He thought Catherine didnât just express her opinions because of her negative personality. As proof of that, when asked how to realize the plan, she offered ideas. She had the ability to analyze important points, not just express her own personal opinion, and think about the direction of the meeting. Nothing less from someone who comes from a family of government officials.
ãHmm, I see it now. Rumania isnât the one we should be wary about, but you.ãCatherine said.
ãWhat are you talking about? League is a great man. Heâs smart too.ã
ãPonsonia sure is a terrifying kingdom. They have the Master Swordsman, Lavia, a sensitive lady of letters, a cunning guy like you...ã
ãHey, Catherine!ãLavia cut in.
ãSee you at the library, Lavia.ãshe said and then left.
ãStrange friend you got there.ã
ãShe seemed the quiet type when we were talking in the library.ã
ãWhat did she mean by a âsensitive lady of lettersâ?ã
ã...No comment.ã
ãOh, come on. Tell me. Itâs not fair that she knows something about you that I donât.ã
ãNo comment!ã
Lavia strolled to the other side of the counter, beet red from embarrassment. Grinning, Hikaru followed her, and the two of them washed the dishes.
ãAnyway, we got more problems now.ã
Lavia chuckled.
ãWhy are you laughing?ã
ãYouâre the one who suggested stuff. You might end up helping with the mass wedding too.ã
ãIâm sure theyâll handle that.ã
ãBut youâre the only one who knows anything about it.ã
ã...I guess.ã
ãTo be honest, I was surprised to hear you say youâre going to convince the queen yourself. You didnât seem that interested in what League is doing.ã
ãMy role is to convince the queen. At least, that was my plan. I expected that Queen Marquedoâs assistance would be needed for the student allianceâs activities. But I didnât think weâd need it that quick.ã
ãWhat about helping Claude?ã
Hikaruâs hand stopped as he was wiping a cup.
ãYouâre asking if Iâm using the Soul Board or not, right?ã
ãYeah.ã
ãThereâs no doubt that tweaking his Soul Board is the quickest way to make him stronger.ã
ãHow much stronger would he get?ã
Hikaru shrugged.
ãVery strong.ã
ã...Really?ã
ãI think he can become the strongest swordsman in the whole continent.ã
ãYouâre joking.ã
ãItâs true.ã
Claude had twelve points available. He already had two points on Sword. Add eight more and he would have ten points. After that, just put more points on his Strength and heâd be the strongest swordsman around. Ponsoniaâs Captain Lawrence had six points on Great Sword. With ten points on Sword, it wouldnât be an overstatement to say Claude would be the strongest.
Hikaru wore a serious expression, and so did Lavia.
ãThat strong, huh?ã
ãHe would excel in one field for sure. I donât want to use it if possible. It would be too obvious that I did something.ã
ãBut then we wonât get Jarazackâs vote.ã
ãI should maybe help him just enough that it wouldnât seem unnatural. Or Iâll just say heâs hypnotized. Either way, I need to see him fight for real first.ã
For some reason, Claudeâs trained during short sword class.
ãAw, sheesh. More students?ãMille said, sounding irked. She was sitting on a chair under a shade just outside the storage room, i.e., lecture building C.
Claude, Luka, Silvester, Ivan and his friends were present as well. Catherine was probably in the library with Lavia, and Katy in her laboratory. It appeared League couldnât lose his watchers (the girls).
ãAll right, Claude. Show me what youâve got.ã
ãHey, Hikaru. Isnât this supposed to be my class?ãMille asked.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
ãYouâll get your turn later.ãHikaru said.ãFor now, I want Claude and Ivan to fight.ã
ãWait, Iâm not fighting you?ãClaude asked. He wanted to know if Hikaru really was strong as they said.
ãYouâre going to fight a great sword user. Ivan is the better choice.ã
ãAll right! Leave it to me!ãIvan yelled as he stood up.
ãGo, Ivan!ã
ãDonât you dare lose to Kirihal!ã
His friends were cheering him on.
ãGood point. All right, Iâll fight Ivan with all Iâve got.ã
ãWait a minute.ãHikaru stopped Claude as he was readying his short spear.
ãYouâre going to use a one-handed sword. Short spear is not exactly your forte, is it?ã
ãHowâd you know?ã
ãWe donât have much time. We should work on what youâre already good at.ã
ã.........ã
Claude hesitated. As for why, Ivan gave the answer.
ãHikaru, a sword is no match against a great sword.ã
ãWhat do you mean?ã
ãA one-handed sword is just an inferior version of a great sword. The latter has faster swinging speed and power.ã
ãSay that after youâve hit me at least once.ã
ãY-Youâre not normal, okay?!ã
ãYeah! Youâre a special case!ãthe onlookers said.
Hikaru nonchalantly ignored them and turned his attention back to Claude.
ãThen all the more reason to try with the one-handed sword.ã
ãHow are you so confident? Itâs true what Ivan just said. My weapon is just a smaller version of the great sword. Itâs mostly for self-defense and formality.ã
ãThatâs exactly what the opponent would think. And thatâs why you have a chance to win.ã
ãReally?ã
ãThereâs no way to get instantly strong in a short amount of time. But by studying the opponent, thereâs a chance you can win in an all-or-nothing fight.ã
ãI see. You might be right. All right, letâs try with a one-handed sword.ã
ãThank you.ã
ãOh, and one more thing, Hikaru.ã
ãWhat is it?ã
ãCould you not talk to me politely? Youâre my teacher right now.ã
ãBut...ã
ãAt least talk like weâre equals.ã
ã.........ã
Hikaru thought about it for a bit.
ãAll right, sure. I wonât hold anything back, though.ã
ãBring it on.ã
Claude was fired up, but Hikaru simply sneered. Seeing his smile, Ivan and his friends yelped.
ãThe devil just smiled!ãthey screamed.
