Chapter 9
My father quickly shoved Callum off of him and got to his feet. My mate swung a fist right into my father's jaw and I could tell my dad had had enough so he jostled him back into the seat that Callum was occupying. In turn, it flipped over with both of them landing on the floor.
Dad tried to restrain Callum by grabbing his wrists but Callum used his forehead to smash into the bridge of my dad's nose.
Callum couldn't fight him off but that move was to his advantage as my father released one of Callum's hand to grab his bleeding nose. Callum used his free hand to grab my dad's neck and flip his body over my father's instead.
I could tell my dad was confused by Callum's strength, but if he was telling the truth, then Callum is also a part werewolf. My idiot of a mate then tried to throttle my father by grabbing his neck but my father was quick to punch him in the gut to which Callum fell off my dad and grabbed his stomach.
As I took a step to stop the fight, my mother's hand grabbed my arm, "Trust me, they need to get out their anger. I'll heal them up after."
She was right, their hatred for each other had to blow up at some point.
Might as well let them get it out now.
My father had risen to feet as he looked at Callum on the ground, "Come on boy, you want to fight like a man? Then get up and fight."
Callum didn't back down, he got right up and lunged at my father but dad didn't hesitate to give him a right hook which busted his lip.
"Ohh! Not the face dad come on!" I grumbled and my mother giggled at my side but I was not kidding.
Just great! This is exactly how I expected my dad and mate to get along... not.
Callum didn't take to likely to his bleeding lip so he shoved my dad into the coffee table... the glass coffee table.
The glass shattered under my dad's weight and I heard him wince but that didn't stop the pair from fighting.
"Okay, they broke my table, I think it's time we break it up." My mother said as she went to grab my dad's hands and I grabbed Callum by his shoulder and easily hauled him to his feet.
He went to swing another fist but he stopped when he realized it was me. But he pulled out of my grasp and looked over to my bleeding father who had shards of glass stuck to his back. Good thing mom was a certified doctor.
And magical healer.
I went to wipe away some of the blood on Callum's chin but he grabbed my wrist and dropped it before stepping away from me.
"Cal-"
"Just save it, Everette." He sighed as he leaned against the railing of the staircase and wiped his bleeding lip on his dirty white shirt.
'Just give him some space honey, I'm sure his mind is in a battle over who his parents really were.' My mother mind linked me.
'He already hates me, mom. I know it.' I said.
'He's your mate, he may not understand it but he'll come around. Just give him some time.' She responded before switching back to audibly speaking, "Ev can you bring my first aid kit from the bathroom please?"
I gazed back at Callum but he refused to look at me or even let me help him. So I left him standing in his solitude as I went to grab the first aid kit from my parents' bathroom.
You'd suspect a classic little box with a white plus sign on it, but nope. My mom had a large red duffle bag with all sorts of medical knick-knacks that came in handy when my dad got hurt training or was attacked severely by a rogue. Of course, we healed quickly but some wounds can take a few hours of excruciating pain before it healed.
Then there were moments like these where my mom had to extract something from the wound. In this case, shards of glass.
I laid the bag next to my mom on the sofa as she grumbled about my father always needing to show off his fighting skills.
As she cut the back of his t-shirt open, I saw blood leaking down his back where the glass was stuck in various places.
My mom was visibly upset but in a mom like fashion, she complained, "You better go out tomorrow and get me a new coffee table."
"Of course sweetheart." My father said through his teeth as my mom began extracting the glass.
"And you better not get another wound for the next year."
"Can't promise that love."
"So you wouldn't mind taking the couch for a few nights then?" My mother countered.
My father conceited as he groaned in pain from the glass, "Okay fine, fine. I promise. Geez, woman, I swear you want me dead."
"Actually quite the opposite." She seriously.
From the corner of my eyes, I could see Callum looking at us with yearning eyes. I guess this type of family was never something he had.
And I didn't know who to blame for that.
My parents who killed his father and tried to kill his mother or his parents for wanting my own dead.
"Why did you want Abigail dead if she was pregnant?" I queried since no one was bringing back up the past. It wasn't in my parents' nature to kill an innocent wolf.
But then again, what did I know?
My mother wiped some of the blood off my father's back as she recalled the past, "When Jake had found me, he knew everything about us including the fact that I could heal. Everette, you know that no one outside our pack knows about the Luna's power. Thane later came to the conclusion that it was Abigail since no one outside of the pack could have possibly known that about me."
"So you wanted her dead for that?" I asked in confusion.
"Of course not honey." My mother paused as she pressed her hands to my father's wound and healed him in an instant.
My father tried to escape her grasp since he never liked it when she used her energy on him but she kept a firm grasp on his shoulder and healed him before he could escape.
In order to heal anyone, my mother usually feels the pain of the wound to a certain degree and it also decreases her energy since that's what's being used to heal the other person.
When she was finished she turned to me, "We had no idea that she was pregnant. When the pack went to Fairbairn to erase the memory of any remaining hunters, they looked for Abigail but she had already left. Her scent indicated she was pregnant but it disappeared into the forest and there was no trail left behind. We searched for her, to help her and her baby but we couldn't find her. The pack had already dwindled down because of the war and then there was a spike in a rogue activity so we didn't exactly have spare wolves to comb the entire forest."
"If she was a werewolf then how did no one from the hunters know about it?" Callum surprised me by asking.
"Since she was a werewolf and Jake hated werewolves, I'm sure your mother kept it a secret for her own safety. I have no idea what she told your grandfather but we never wanted to hurt her after she was exiled. The only thing I wanted was to protect her and her baby but she and your grandfather fled before that could happen." My mother explained.
Callum's eyes held a spark of clarity but as his eyes landed on me, he asked, "If my mother was a wolf and my dad was a human, like you two, then why am I not like Everette? A werewolf?"
"It's because your mother was a normal pack member before and then a rogue, which is a low ranking wolf. Her blood wasn't as pure or powerful as Alpha's blood. So it wasn't strong enough to turn you into a werewolf. You either need to be born of pure werewolf bloodline or from having an Alpha parent." My father answered.
"But he's stronger than most humans." I pointed out.
My dad smiled, "He may be stronger, faster and have a stronger sense of smell but that's where it ends. He isn't the first person born of mixed species that isn't an Alpha's child. But don't worry, deep inside he's still a part wolf. Guess those dogs jokes apply to him as well."
Callum shot daggers at my father's last statement, "Not as much dog as you."
Dad merely chuckled in response, "And you better remember that next time you pick a fight with me."
"There will be no next time." My mother cut in and playfully slapped my dad's arm.
"I'm with mom on that," I added before turning back to Callum.
"So I can't shift into a wolf? Thank goodness." He mumbled in relief.
My mother giggled and then my father laughed along with her which lightened the mood considerably.
"What's the joke senior citizens?" I asked.
"Your mother said the exact thing twenty years ago." My father chuckled.
"You humans are delusional to not want this power," I said in disbelief.
"With great power comes great responsibility." My mom quoted a spider-man line of course.
My dad's eyes lit with amusement but I still had a question.
"Why did you keep Abigail a secret from me?" I questioned my last piece of confusion.
My mother cleaned her hands with a few wipes before approaching me.
"I thought that if you knew about Abigail being out there alone with a baby that you would want to go find her." I wanted to argue but she was right, the pack has always been my main priority and that included kids. Even lost rogue children who didn't deserve their fate because of their parents' mistakes. "It's in your nature honey and I didn't want you going off and getting hurt since we didn't know how many hunters survived and then the rogue problem just added to my concerns."
"You should have told me..." I sighed.
"I know honey. I know." She admitted before she walked over to Callum.
"I'm sorry for what happened to your parents Callum. You had nothing to do with what happened twenty years ago and I know that your parents, no matter how angry they were at us, would always want you safe now that you are here with us. I know that it's an unconventional situation but what happened was the past and we can only look to the future now which includes forgiveness. Not for me or my husband but for Everette's sake. She had no idea about you or Abigail."
My mother slyly touched Callum's cheek and healed his bleeding lip, nose, and cuts that he got from the glass.
I could see his surprised expression from what she did.
As she stepped away, he whispered, "Thank you."
She gave him a small smile, "Whenever you're ready, I'm sure your mother's adopted family would love to meet you."
Callum gulped and I could see the uneasiness stirring within him, "Maybe later."
"Of course, when you're ready," She said. "Now you two look exhausted so why don't you go back to the packhouse and take a rest after your long journey."
I nodded as she and my dad started to clean up the mess the boys made.
"Come on," I said as I walked out the door.
Callum remained silent as we exited the house into the orange evening. I wanted to know what he was thinking, why he was silent and just everything that was inside his mind.
But with his silent treatment and obvious solo contemplation, I knew the last thing he needed was my overbearing self.
I left him to his melancholy as we walked back to the packhouse as the sunset cast it's glowing rays around us.
As the packhouse came into view, I was surprised when Callum stopped and faced me with a question in his eyes, "Is it true? What they said back there?"
"From what they said, it was the exact story they told me since I was a kid but they hadn't included your mother in any of it. So, I want to believe that they told us the truth. However, they kept information from me for so long and now I don't know..." I trailed off as my mind waged a war with what I knew and what I now know.
"So you had no idea of my mother existing? No idea of who I was when you chose me back in Fairbairn?" He asked.
I shook my head, "No, I hadn't heard of her till just now. As for 'picking' you, you know I sniffed out your bodily odor. So technically you only have yourself to blame."
His lips quirked up, "What was it again? Juniper berries and fresh sage?"
I rolled my eyes from his mocking tone, "At least it's not fire roasted vanilla. Which by the way you still haven't explained to me how it smells."
"Maybe one day." He whispered under his breath which caught me off guard.
So there's going to be a 'one day'? As in a possible future. Interesting...
"And my dad? Is it true that he killed your dad before the infamous Moon Goddess brought him back?"
"That's what everyone says. My dad only tried to protect the pack, that I know for sure." I said with confidence.
"To think I painted this picture of my parents to be some kind of perfect couple who rebelled against a greater evil and now I'm hearing a different side of the story." He ran his hands through his hair and tugged at the ends in frustration.
"Sometimes the truth is harder to swallow than a lie. I'm sure that your grandfather thought along with my parents."
"Your parents at least told you most of the truth but grandpa always drilled the notion of the war not being my dad's fault and refused when anyone else said differently." Callum's tone had an edge.
"Old people aren't always wise." I shrugged.
"But he's the only family I have left, he should have told me the truth."
"Do you believe my parents then?" I asked hopefully.
"Doesn't matter now, does it?" He mumbled.
"You say that quite often." I pointed out.
He chuckled, "Yeah, well I guess this ritual thing made me a bit cynical."
"I assumed that was your natural personality." I grinned.
"Nope, just comes with being a kidnapped victim." He joked but I knew a piece of him was serious.
I nervously cracked my knuckles before clearing my throat, "I may... or may not be a tad bit sorry -but not really- for kidnapping you."
My eyes flickered around to our surroundings since feelings and apologies were out of my territory.
"Well, I suppose you didn't exactly create the ritual..." He mused.
"But I did bring you here against your will." I sighed.
"Well, there's that," He chuckled. "But I guess if you hadn't brought me here, I wouldn't have found out about my parents or get to learn about my mother, which I intend to do." I felt like a massive weight was lifted off my shoulder.
Maybe now things will run smoothly.
To think it's only been a day.
A very long ass day.
"Well, then how about I make it up to you with some dinner Callum Cain?" I asked with a smile.
"How about letting me take a bath and get some rest? I don't know about you wolves but I'm dead tired." He gave me a small smile but a genuine one.
"Us wolves," I smirked at his annoyed expression. "Don't you forget you're part wolf."
As we entered the packhouse, it was bustling with everyone living here since it was almost dinner time.
Callum froze as he saw all the new faces that weren't here earlier today. Can't blame him though, we were a rowdy bunch.
He leaned in closer to me, "This your pack?"
I smiled proudly, "Just a mere percentage, we have around six hundred pack members."
"Six hundred?" He asked with wide eyes.
"It's a little over that but yup, that's our Blood Moon pack."
"I didn't know there were so many of you." He said in shock.
"It's actually less than it used to be since things have been rough around here."
"How so?" He asked as we walked towards the staircase and everyone gave Callum curious glances as he was my mate and their Máni.
"There's been an intense increase in rogues over the last twenty years. It's gotten to a really bad point where our border patrol has almost tripled." I explained.
"And rogues are wolves that aren't in a pack correct?" He clarified.
"Yup, that's right. They either ran away, got kicked out of their pack or lost their pack many years ago due to wars or other rogue attacks."
"Do you know what's been causing the increase?"
"No idea, we've been trying to figure out where they're all coming from but it's been hard since the pack is so small and it's only been happening near our territory and not anywhere else."
"I can tell that's odd." He said as we made it to the third floor.
"Odd beyond belief." I said as I lead him to the guest bedroom, "You can use the shower in here and I'll get a change of clothes for you since I don't have any men clothing lying around."
"Just make sure it doesn't belong to that ex-boyfriend of yours." He grumbled as he headed towards the bathroom.
"Why? Jealous?" I provoked.
"Nope." That stung.
"You should know, he was never my boyfriend." I clarified at the insinuation of Finn and me.
"Whatever you say, princess." He called back at me.
I huffed in irritation because I didn't want him to think that Finn and I were together since he was my mate.
Leaving him to scrub clean, I headed to find Charlotte and borrow some clothes from her mate, Max.
'Char? I need to borrow some clothes .' I mind linked her.
'Why? Did you not do laundry again? I swear Ev-'
'Not for me, for my mate.'
'Pretty sure my tube tops won't fit him but we can try...'
I laughed, 'As appealing as that idea is, I meant Max's clothing.'
'Meet me in my room.' She responded.
I met her up in her and Max's room which she surprised me by holding a large bowl of spaghetti.
"Have I told you how much I loved you recently?" Was the first thing I said as I grabbed the heavy bowl from her.
What can I say? I love food and was a growing wolf.
"Hmm no, but you can start praising me and saying how lucky you are to have me as your Delta." She grinned as she walked to her closet and pulled out two pairs of clothing. "I'm assuming that mate of yours will want pajamas now?"
"Uhmm, yeah I think?" I said unsurely.
"And how exactly did he know about us?" She asked suspiciously.
I bit my lip in nervousness. How do I tell her that Callum was the son of Jake Cain? The man who also caused her father to sustain a gunshot wound, but survived.
"I also heard he and Alpha Thane got into a fight?" She raised her eyebrows with concern.
"If I tell you, would you promise not to tell anyone until I make a pack announcement?"
"Now you're worrying me, Ev, what did he do? Did he have another gun?" She asked with growing concern.
"No, no he didn't do anything but fight my dad... but he's someone..."
"Well, he certainly isn't something," She said and urged me to go on.
"No, he's the son of someone," I stressed.
"Who?!" She raised her hand in the air with impatience.
'Jake Cain,' I whispered through mind link and she yelled,
"He's the son of-!!" I slapped one of my palms over her mouth to muffle her scream.
"Charlotte, I told you that you can't tell anyone! That means no screaming it in a house filled with super hearing wolves!" I hissed but kept my hand on her mouth as she stared at me with wide eyes.
'He's the son of the killer? The man who almost murdered our entire pack!?' She screamed at me through our mind link.
I removed my hand from her mouth and held my head, "Geez, you don't have to yell. But yes..."
'You know the pack isn't going to like this, right?' She asked but I could sense the uneasiness she had as she handed me the clothes.
'I know. Just promise you wouldn't tell a soul until I ease them into accepting Callum. Well, that's if he doesn't reject me.' I said.
'Reject you? You think that's what he wants?' She asked with concern.
'I honestly have no idea. He seemed to believe what my parents said about his parents and what happened twenty years ago, so maybe he'll come around.'
'And how did your parents take it?'
'Surprisingly well. Except for dad but they knew who he was when mom saw him. And you wouldn't believe this but apparently, he's the son of a werewolf.'
Her eyes were basically popping out of her head now, 'He's what?! How?! Wasn't Jake Cain a human?'
'Char, can you stop yelling? I can hear you loud and clear in here.' I scolded her but she does this often, yell through our mind link. 'But to answer your question, his mother was this woman named Abigail who was once apart of the pack. She was aunt Bailey's adopted sister.'
'Aunt Bailey had a sister? How the heck did we not know this?'
'Apparently, my parents thought it was better to keep it a secret from us.' I sighed.
'Does-'
But before she could finish her sentence, a knock resounded on the door and from the scent, I knew it was Finn.
Charlotte gave me a 'we're-not-finished-here' look before opening the door.
Finnick gave her a sheepish smile, "Just wanted to speak to the Alpha."
"Clearly." She said but blocked me from going out the door.
She and Finn stared at each other for a few seconds and I knew they were mind linking. Not these two as well...
"You both do know I can Alpha command you to tell me what you're mind linking about right?" I interrupted.
Finn remained silent on the topic and Charlotte just shrugged, "Just reminding him that you have a mate now."
"Charlotte." I hissed embarrassed but thankful for her at the same time.
"Just so you know, I am quite aware of her mate that tried to kill her." Finn retorted.
"But he didn't." Charlotte pointed out.
"But-"
"Okay kids, how about we leave this discussion for another day." I said as I cut past Char with a quick, "Thanks for the food and clothes," and stepped outside her room.
"I heard your mate attacked Alpha Thane." Finn rose a brow at me as Charlotte headed back downstairs with a warning glare my way.
'Just remember your mate hasn't rejected you yet... or that he's the son of Jake Cain.' She mind linked.
'I will once you don't tell anyone.' I replied to her with a forced smile.
I could Alpha command her but I only did that in dire situations. I trusted my Delta not to give away my secret.
I turned back to Finn, "He sort of did but they both ended up fighting each other."
"And you allowed him to attack your dad?"
"No, he sort of just lunged at him and my mom said to let them fight it out." I shrugged.
Finn looked confused and shocked, "Why would they need to fight it out?"
And there ladies and gentlemen, is how I can never get anything past this guy.
"You know dad's always protective and Cal is still trying to figure everything out." I lied, sort of.
"Cal?" He asked in surprise.
"Yeah... his name is Callum." I nodded awkwardly.
"On a nickname basis already huh?" He rhetorically asked. "And did you find out how he knew about us?"
"He's a hunter, there were a few left in Fairbairn that escaped twenty years ago so he grew up learning about us."
Finn looked taken aback, "There are more of them? How much? And why aren't we searching for them right now?"
"Because Finn, it's been twenty years. They clearly don't know where we are and the pack is too short on wolves to go sniffing out hunters while there are so many rogues."
"You're right, but how are we so sure we can trust him?" Finn asked.
"He's my mate, Finn. Trust is something that we'll have to learn to build with him, but right now, I trust him not to hurt me. As for the pack, I'll protect them before anything could happen." I assured him.
"I know you will, but just be safe okay? There's something about him that gives me a bad feeling." He confessed.
If only he knew...
I knew for sure that Finn would be way past angry with me when he found out just who Callum was, but I knew that if I told him now, he'd go after Callum. And that's something I didn't need right now.
"Trust me when I say, I got this. It's new for both the pack and him."
"I do trust you Ev, more than you know. I just want you to know that I'm here for you because you seem to not like to take care of yourself." He gave me a smile, "I am your best friend after all."
That made me smile but also crumble on the inside. I'm lying to him while he puts his faith in me.
"You are my bestie." I laughed, "Now if you don't mind, I have to go make sure my mate hasn't run off yet."
His eyes widened in alarm, "You left him alone?"
"Relax." I laughed, "I can still smell his scent in the house. That and I have guards under every window, he's not going anywhere."
Finn visibly relaxed, "Good, take care of yourself around him, Everette. I mean it. And if you need help handling that human, I'm a mind link away." He tapped his forehead before walking back towards the staircase.
I watched Finn's retreating form as guilt filled my bones. How could I keep this secret from my best friend who only wants what's best for me? But how can I tell him that my mate, a guy he already hates, is the son of Jake Cain, the man who killed his father?
I don't know if I was a bad Alpha or the world's worst best friend.
But I did know that when the pack found out about Callum's bloodline, they'll want blood.
His blood.
I shook the thoughts out of my head for a brief moment since I had a lot of work to catch up on, a mate to secure and a mind that's hazy from a lack of sleep.
Going back up to my floor of the packhouse, I set my large bowl of spaghetti down on the kitchen counter before going to the guest room.
I knocked but there was no answer and from my wolf hearing, I didn't detect the sound of the showering being on.
But I could very much hear his heartbeat.
Deciding that he was probably still in the bathroom, I walked into the room to set the clothes down.
But unfortunately, well maybe it's more fortunate for me, he walked out of the bathroom with his towel hanging low on his waist as I stepped into the room.
We both froze in surprise as we spotted each other.
My eyes took on a mind of its own and quickly ran down the length of his body and I swear I nearly drooled.
Girls and gays everywhere, let me tell you in detail that this man was a fine specimen. Six pack abs, a defining v line that disappeared beneath his towel, a sprinkling of chest hair and let's not get started on his toned arms and legs. No wonder he could put up a fight. But as a cherry on this hunk of a sundae, he had a huge tribal tattoo on the right side of his chest.
The design was an intricate piece of art that only laid on his right peck. As if the man needed something additional to make him more beautiful.
Yup, that's right, purely beautiful.
"Finish checking me out, princess?" He called me out of my revere and bringing my eyes back to his electric green ones.
My cheeks instantly flamed hot but I could also see that his were tinged pink.
Guess we were both blushing at my obvious ogling.
"I wasn't," I grumbled but we all know I was most definitely doing so.
"Your eyes don't lie. I can read you like a book through those brown eyes." He said and I was surprised by that admission.
I rolled my eyes, "Whatever you say, Romeo, now get dressed." I threw his pajamas at his chiseled chest before laying a t-shirt and a pair of jeans on the edge of the bed. "We'll get you some new clothes tomorrow."
At my last sentence, his eyes dimmed a bit and I could physically see his mood deteriorate.
"Right, cause I'll be here till the end of time." He muttered.
"You could reject me." I burst out and said.
It was never something I wanted to say but he had to know that he had a choice.
Not a good one, but one anyways.
"Reject you?" He asked with unease.
"Yeah, if you don't want to be here. All you have to do is reject me and we'll take you across the country to live your life. You can't go back into Fairbairn but you will be able to live your life as humanly normal as possible without ever seeing my face again. Of course, you wouldn't be able to tell anyone about us and I'd have to leave some wolves to watch over you." I said nervously as I looked at the ground.
Without notice, he walked over to me and used his index finger to lift my chin to look at him.
As I stared up at his towering form, he admitted, "I'm not quite ready to give up seeing your beautiful face yet." I swear if I would have turned to mush if I didn't want to keep up my strong Alpha persona.
I cleared my throat and nodded, "I am pretty beautiful aren't I." I cringed at my own narcissism before coughing, "I mean, sure, if that's what you want."
"It's what I want right now." He said cryptically.
My eyebrows knitted in confusion but I said nothing on the matter except, "Okay."
"Okay." He replied and his eyes flashed to my lips and then back to my eyes and then back to lips. He leaned in a bit closer and I could feel his breath fanning my face.
I thought he was going to kiss me but before I could even close my eyes in anticipation, he immediately stepped back.
"Have a good night, Princess." He said and got distant, both metaphorically and physically.
"Uhh...night?" I mumbled as I turned towards the door in confusion. Before I exited, I added, "And don't bother trying to escape because there are guards surrounding the house."
I heard a humorless chuckled, "And what if I did try?"
"Then I'll chain you to the bed." I threw over my shoulder.
"Kinky." He said and I dared a look back and he shot me a wink.
I became all flustered and quickly walked out and shut the door behind me.
Was that flirting? And did we almost kiss? Holy shit on a stick.
Can that be considered progress after he tried to shoot me this morning?
I'd say yes.
I tried to calm my quickening pulse as I grabbed my dinner and a fork before heading towards my office on this floor.
There was a large bookshelf running on the entire right wall and the left contained various pictures of the pack through time. It was quite an interesting little view of the Blood Moon pack's timeline.
Besides that, I had my old wooden desk, a very comfortable office chair, a sofa that was never used and tons of papers strewn around in a chaotic mess that I couldn't control.
Sorting out papers wasn't really something I was good at, but I got my job done.
I nestled into my chair, with my dinner in front of me while I booted up my desktop. I was devouring large forkfuls of spaghetti as I reviewed my notes of recent rogue attacks, their positioning and possible locations they were hiding out at that we had to scout. There was also a business merger I had to look over for one of our many family businesses my ancestors started around the country that made us a wealthy pack. And to top that off, I had to plan a speech for a group of new wolves that just turned sixteen and had to start training on the field since they're of age to fight.
All in a day's work as Alpha.
And there was also the occasional mind link for orders, like right now.
'Alpha, south patrol have seen around ten rogues a few miles off our territory. Seems as if they were just passing through but I think we need a few extra wolves out here tonight.' Came the voice of Samuel who was running patrol tonight.
The only extra wolves we could afford tonight were the ones taking shifts under the windows of the packhouse because of Callum. The other wolves already had their designated duty and the ones who took the day time shift needed their rest and wouldn't be able to function at one hundred percent which could get them hurt.
So without a choice, I sent them away, 'Hey guys, thanks for helping me keep my mate in the packhouse but we're all good tonight. Head to the southern border to help with the patrol.'
A chorus of, 'Yes Alpha,' resounded in my head.
Since I was staying up to finish my work anyways, I could keep an eye on Callum. Though he didn't give me the vibe that he wanted to escape tonight. But I still didn't trust him fully.
That was something that may take some time.
So for the next few hours, I finished up my dinner, took a bath and got down to finishing my work.
That was until sleepiness overtook me and I passed out on my desk.
~~~
I felt my hands being moved back before a burning sensation jolted me awake.
My eyes flashed open and I was momentarily comforted to see Callum standing next to me but the burning pain persisted as I tried to move my arms.
I blink the tiredness away as I realized my predicament.
Callum was standing above me with a small needle that was thin and contained some liquid.
I tried to move but realized that something bound me to my chair. It seemed to be his shirt that he made into a rope...like what I did to him in the forest after he tried to shoot me.
And by the burning my wrists felt, I knew it was silver that was binding my hands.
"Callum, what the hell are you doing?" I asked in confusion as my wrist burned from what I presumed was silver handcuffs that held my hands back. "You've been carrying this around all this time?!"
How the hell did we not find this when we patted him down?
"My leg." He shrugged as he tightened the knot on the shirt that bound me.
Friendliness be damned, I should have made him do a strip search.
I tugged on the handcuff but it only bit into my skin like fire on a raw wound.
"So what? I tied you up so now you handcuff me for revenge?" I growled.
He leaned down to my sitting height as he said, "Here's how this is going to work princess. I'm going to leave and you're going to sit here and not follow me. If you do, then remember that I know exactly where your pack of wolves are."
I scoffed, "And what makes you think that you can actually get away?"
"This," He said as he held up the small syringe.
I eyed the liquid in it carefully and luckily it wasn't silver.
"Callum, what the fuck is that?" I asked slowly.
"Don't worry princess, it's not going to hurt. Just ensure a safe escape for me."
He stuck the needle in my arm before I could kick him away.
'Pen-' I tried to mind like my Beta but the substance immediately made me drowsy and I couldn't focus on mind linking anyone. I felt the walls closing in on me as I became extremely dizzy and disoriented.
"W-what...the hell...did...y-you...do to...me? I asked in a broken sentence.
My mind was spinning as I stared at my mate who held guilty eyes.
"I'm sorry I had to do this princess." He leaned forward and placed a kiss on my forehead.
I didn't grasp what was happening as reality slipped through my fingers.
I barely managed to keep my eyes opened as he walked out of my office.
From a distance I heard a whisper, "It's for your own safety," before my mind completely frizzled into nothingness and I knocked out.
